I was into the Scotch, that always raises hell with my spelling. But, I remembered to put an "h" on the end of Edinburgh this time!

Just realized as I posted that you meant "Mayfield" Kendall.

Kendall, the Northumberland Hotel is in Craigmillar Park, which is in the Newington district. Edinburgh doesn't have a Mayfair district, you must be thinking of some other occasion when you painted the town red in the West End of London ....

I stayed at the Northumberland hotel in the Mayfair district. Best salmon I ever ate.

As an exile Scot now living in the people's republic of South Yorkshire who likes his beer, can I just warn you CET ,that Scottish Beer unless it's traditional is probably the worst fizzy pop you can sup !! Stick to a CAMRA approved pub otherwise drink Guinness !!

The Central Bar session sounds great. We will probably be getting in to Edinburgh later on Sunday night or on Monday, however, so we'll most likely miss it. Still, we'll put it on our list. I'm looking forward to trying the beer.

I don't have any specific recommendations for small hotels (I live here- never had to stay in one!) but there are absolutely loads along Minto Street which is in the Newington area, on the edge of town centre - most of these would probably fit your bill...

As for musical recommendations I strongly suggest visiting the Central Bar (which is at the bottom of Leith Walk) on a Sunday 3-7ishpm, it's an instrumental session but well worth a visit for a listen even if singing is more your thing, though you will be very welcome to join in too. It's also a really nice traditional pub (inside walls are completely tiled which might seem bad from an acoustic point of view but it's not at all) with several good beers on tap and a friendly publican.

Fraid I don't know the hotels and guest houses in Edinburgh. Also afraid I'm away that weekend or you'd have been welcome to stay with me, only 20 miles away from edinburgh.

Charmion and I will be in Edinburgh in the third week of May. The Crowne Plaza would be handy, but more expensive than we want. Any suggestions for small hotels or guest houses? Luxury isn't important. We're more interested in staying somewhere friendly, hopefully with a bit of atmosphere.

Thanks guys for the help.
Found a couple that we're deciding on now.
The better half wants to stay at the Royal Terrace, and I've opted for the Ramada Jarvis at Murrayfield. Just have to wait and see who folds first.
Once again thanks!
Cheers
TC.

Accomodation in Edinburgh ranges vastly in price. Be good to know what kind of thing your looking for.

I'm not particularly good on live music in town, but the last I knew there were also live sets at teh Hebridean, beside Waverly train station and not far from the Crowne, The West End Hotel also has sessions, about a mile across town and I'm sure I've seen Ensign Ewart (on the Royal Mile ) listed.

Murray and other good people will keep us right I'm sure.

Murray, Tony, the hotel has indeed changed it's name to the Crowne Plaza. The Tass is about 200 yards down the hill on the opposite side of the road. If you go in there you should be able to pick up a copy of The GigGuide, which has listings for what's on where in the way of music. The same info is also on their website: www.gigguide.co.uk .

Tony, I think its name has changed since my day, and the Scandic is now the Crowne Plaza Hotel"

Cheers Murray,
I'll try and get some info on the Hotel. Especially as it's onlystaggering distance, from the pubs.
Many thanks

The Scandic Hotel is located right in the heart of the Royal Mile, and is within two to three minutes staggering distance of the Royal Oak, Sandy Bells, and the Tass, where most of the live sessions and singarounds take place.

Travelling to Edinburgh in mid March. Would like to know of any good music pubs/clubs. Also any good hotels that are situated around the Royal Mile. I'd be very thankful for any help. TC
