Kayakers will recognize the manouver. Eskimo roll. Tough to execute with a barge of coal astern, but nicely executed in this case.

The boat is the MV Cahaba owned by Warrior and Gulf Navigation of Mobile, AL. The pictures were taken by an amateur photgrapher named Barger. This happened in April, 1979 at Demopolis, AL on the Warrior River. Nobody was seriously injured and the boat continued to it's destination with the barges. To my knowledge, the boat is still in service. The bridge has since been replaced.

In the first few photos you can see several people standing around watching the drama unfold. In all the following photos what do you see? Empty bridge. Not one of the people there has raced to the spot where the tug is jammed with a view to assisting any crew that may be able to get out. Yeah, thumb in bum and mind in neutral, happens allover.

John, in one of the photos, the caption points out that water was coming over the bridge railing. They may not have been allowing people out that far on the bridge for fear of their safety and also not knowing if the bridge would stand up once the tug hit it.

Jim Dixon posted an alternative link, which in turn has several alternative sites, in the other thread. That might work for you on the last two photos.

What folks should also realize is that tugs have low freeboard and vertualy no water tight bulkheads, as their engine rooms take up so much of the internal bulk of the vessle, so they tend to sink VERY quick ... often with most of their crew, which is why when I first saw this,... horror then hilarity. I don't think they did a full roll. Just kinda skidded sideways.

Like to find out what kind of engine they had in that baby. They shoulda made a commercial with those pics.

Great pics it is amazing what some machines and people can survive, and when you know the people were safe you can enjoy the results of mother nature reminding us just who is in charge round here.
