Written by somebody called McNulty, it seems, probably 1860s/70s (if it's the same McNulty), probably in the USA; that's all I've found.

Malcolm

I see references to sheet music, with McNulty for the words and one Tom Madden for the music. Also a quote as to it being "From the emormously successful musical extravaganza The King of Dublin " - of which I've never heard! Little sign of dates - apart from one edition in 1928 - which I agree sounds too late to be the first.

Regards

"Because I Love You So, Machree" was recorded by Frank Ryan on a 78rpm record, sometime between 1930 and 1948, and has been reissued on a CD called Angels Guard Thee. Authorship was credited to someone named McNulty.

It was also recorded by Louis Browne on CD called "Irish Tenor Favorites."

Sheet Music Warehouse has this entry:

Likely a later McNulty than the one I found, then; he was William E. McNulty, and active as a songwriter 50 years or so earlier.

"machree" is from the Irish language endearment "mo chroí", meaning "my heart"
