Thanks, Jim: Always good to see your name in here. I have the equipment to record the Gospel Messengers, and a new CD of my own, and plenty of material. It's more a matter of trying to get us all together to do the recording. We're retired, so we don't have any spare time any more...

You'll surely get a copy of either, if we ever get them done..

As a relative new-comer to Mudcat, I, too, would like to hear some of the music from the various 'catters. Of course, as a co-host of a folk music radio show, I have an additional motive. And as an acquaintance of Jerry, Ruth, and the members of the 'Messengers, I can attest to the fact that he is just as fine a fellow as he is a song writer/performer! And he is a fellow Lonnie Donegan fan---a high complement, indeed!
In an exchange of emails with Art T., he and I decided it is time for Jerry to produce a CD of his own material, and I gather from a comment or two above that there might be a 'Messengers CD in the works, as well In either case, I better hear about it so I can get a copy when it/they come(s) out.
If any of you who are attending this thread want to send CD's with an excellent chance for air play, contact me by PM and I will supply an address. You can check out my program at www.yourfolkconnection.org. And, boy! Would I love to have a Mudcatter CD with all of you on it!
      Hi, Jerry and Ruth!

Jerry, just want to share this with you.

First, my maternal Grandfather was a carpenter by trade.

Day before yesterday, the family got together to celebrate my cousin Jenny's 35th birthday. Jenny is a special person. Shortly after she was born she contracted scarlet fever, and suffered brain damage. She was such a beautiful kid, and the family took it as such a tragedy. But the Greatest One had a lesson in mind with Jenny. She is such a love, and such a great person, that the family is constantly reminded in her life, that every person is a gift from The Greatest One. She brings us all joy, and in her simplicity, she brings such great wisdom to the clan. We all know that we are lucky to have her in our life.

Jenny always wants me to bring my guitar and sing for her. And when I do, she stands right beside me and sings right along. It is the only time she sings. And it is joyous to hear and be part of.

This year my Aunt (Jenny's Mom) asked if I would sing another song. I sang "Handful of Song". The opening line had no more than escaped my mouth, and the tears started to show. When I sang the rest of it, and folks just looked at Jenny, well, it was a magical moment. They all got the fact that life, no matter what it hands us, is precious and that every person is a gift. I had to go make copies of the lyrics because a number of folks wanted them.

You, Jerry, are a gift. I just thought you ought to know that your song touched many people that night, and had great meaning. I am your fan, sir, and I thank you for the gift.

All the best,

Mick

Mudcat CD... sounds interesting. If anyone was starting such a project, they may like to have a word with the people in alt.banjo who have just been through this sort of thing - they ended up producing a 2 CD set which they are selling for $8 including postage! Delivery is promised in sometime this month. The website is here

Hi, Michaelr: Here it is, two in the morning, and I'm responding to you. Just had a beautiful evening and am too excited to sleep. Yes, Larry... time to start a new thread, I think. There are certainly many Mudcatters who would be enthusiastic about all of this who don't realize the conversation is even going on because they have no idea who I am, and have no reason to check the thread. I'm glad that you're enjoying the tape, Larry and the offer still stands to others who wonder who I am, and as Sian put it, why I am new. There is a much better chance of something happening with a CD if this conversation has its own thread. (I vote for a sampler, or samplers, myself.)

Back when I was still working and people would approach me filled with enthusiasm for a new project, I'd ask them several questions. It helped focus the project and give it a better chance of success. The most obvious questions are:

What is the REASON you think it is a good idea?
Who is your audience?
What do you want to accomplish?

If there is general agreement on those three questions, then there's a much better chance that most people will be sastified.

I'll give you my response to those three questions. Yours may be different.

I think that it is a good idea, because I think Mudcat would be even stronger, and more fun if we knew what we all sound like, and what kind of music we love.

I think our audience is us. If that's the case, it eliminates some of the questions about whether someone is "good" enough to be on the CD (orCDs.) We wouldn't be shooting for next year's grammys. Personally, I'd like to hear CatLaughing,Greg Stephens, Sian(c'mon, Sian) and many others who I only know as these little black squiggles on my computer screen. I'd feel that I know them better, and what I might be able to share with them.

I guess I've answered the third question.. I'd just like to know Catters better, know what they liked, what they cared about, and what kind of music comes out of them.

Others may want a more professionally produced CD where people are culled out because they may not be as polished. If your audience is broader than Mudcat, then you might want to do a "Best of Mudcat" Cd (although not with that title. Many of us have our own CDs out, or are in the process of recording them. I don't think we need Mudcat's involvement for that. But, if a Mudcat CD was produced, I'd sure buy one!

Just thinking out loud at 2 in the morning.

Jerry

G'day Michaelr,

You're right (if sort of wrong ...) about MP3s. It is all a matter of compression ... MP3 is an industry prostitute, designed to deliver what you can afford. There are a long range of compressions ... starting at virtually CD quality (and BIG files, slow and expensive to e-mail) down to REALLY SMALL, neat and fast to e-mail ... and pretty poor quality - you pays your money ... I've heard good ones ... and BAD ones!

Bob Bolton

No disrespect to Max, but why would his approval be required (except for use of the Mudcat name/logo)?
The problem I see with the Idiosyncratic Individual approach is that such an individual's personal tastes would influence the selection, thereby creating resentment in those people whose contributions are not selected. So I'm with Bobert - anyone who sends in songs should at least have one of them on the CD(s).

I may be on thin ice here technologically (pretty new to all this myself), but to me mp3s sound inferior, and I am attributing this to the digital file compression used. Maybe one of you techies out there can enlighten us on whether this problem persists when mp3s are converted to .wav files.

Lastly, I do believe that this subject merits its own thread (let's let po' Jerry get some rest!); I would start one myself but I'm unclear on how to paste posts from this thread into the new one (maybe with post paste?)

Cheers,
Michael

Technically we can do it, and there's lots of music there for the taking - the puzzle is, there's no process for doing it.

The two ways forward would be, either Max or someone with Max's approval gives the word, or someone appoints themselves, and gets authorised in some way.

How did the T-shirts come about?

CB, that last-but-one sentence is the key to many good things. If there is an idea which seems to be worth something, I'd rather ask 'how can we do it?' than suggest reasons why it won't work.

Sorry I can't understand all the technology - I've only today bought my first CD burner and copied my first album! - but I'll help in any way I can. I'll even submit a song, and won't gripe if I don't get picked!!!

Let's do it... however sketchy the first attempt is, let's make a first attempt. - Ian B

This is great! It looks as though the idea is acceptable and workable. The technological side should be handled as efficiently as possible. If a special program is needed or if raw material is a problem could that be "pro-rated" to offset the cost of the CD? I would buy at least three CDs myself and probably more. My buying it would not be contingent on being on the CD either. I really would like to hear other 'catter's stuff. So far I have heard only Jerry's but if the music that would get on the CD is anything even remotely like what I have heard it should be great stuff. I constantly urge folkies and other musicians to visit this forum. Being able to send them a CD of members would work wonders! I can burn and copy CD's (I have two CD drives) but I have little knowledge about how to go about doing it except from the thread: TECH Help: Transferring tape or vinyl to CD. posted from Guest,JTT on December 5, 2001. I haven't tried to do what was suggested in the thread but it seems easy enough. I'll experiment with the process. Austin Pollard (guest) has the most detailed explanation but Guest Dale seems to have professional experience in this area and Joe Offer also seems to have a good grasp of what is needed. I don't know about any of you but my personal feeling is: If someone is doing something I support and is earnest about doing a good job I am willing to support them. That is in every way including financially.

They say a camel is a horse designed by committee - which I always think is unfair to camels, who are brilliantly designed for the kind of country horses can't cope with. But the idea behind the saying is true enough.

That's why having an Idiosyncratic Individual selection makes sense. By one of the Idiosyncratic Individuals around the Mudcat. I think Rick would be brilliant, for example. But it's difficult twisting people's arms over the Internet.

Actually sticking the playlist drawn up by the Idiosyncratic Individual together and putting it on a CD would be a separate task, and not that overwhelming, even working from tapes.

Cost of a blank CD and case is about 40p, cost of a label and so forth about another 30p. 70p in all, about $1, not counting anything for anybody's time. That's producing them one by one or five by five.

We could have different people in different parts of the world producing small batches as and when required. Anyone who wants a copy just sends the dosh in to Mudcat, and the word goes out to someone to send them a CD. They could either claim back the postage, or treat it as a donation to Mudcat from themselves. Of course it'd be all dependent on trust, but most people are honest enough when it come down to it.

I'd prefer hearing one from each who submits something, too, Bobert, for an initial one, at least. I think the theme idea would be great for subsequent ones, as long as there was plenty of variation.

The program I use to convert is called MusicMatch 7.0. And, again, no problem for me to convert cassettes to mp3s.

Why's everybody lookin' at me? Jus' funnin. Hey, as much as I would love to have a few Catdisks around to play when I'm in the Catbox, I am so techologically challenged that I got an arrow and "This side down" written on masking tape on my garden shovel, so when it come to puter stuff....well, that's another sad story indeed. I can make tapes and that's about it. So we need someone, as some of the Catters have said they can do, who are willing to take either tapes and CD's and convert them to CD's. That seems to be the first issue.

The choice issue is a bit tougher. Themes? Random? My personal feeling is that I would like to hear at least one song from any Catter who goes to the trouble of submitting something. It makes it easier to for me to feel who they are when I later read their posts. I like some of Jerry's ideas but wouldn't mind seeing some other folks ideas.

Back in '95 while I was recording at Folk-Legacy, and making the most amazing discoveries (antiquarian books that I never thought I'd actually SEE let alone read...weird and wonderful instruments poking out of every alcove..and folk periodicals from the dawn of the revival) I discovered some humble tapes, barely even labeled. One day I sat down and started listening. What a treasure...dozens of songs by a writer who's existence I was barely familiar with. Most people as prolific as Jerry have a LOT of filler material...but each song was a GEM!

Every visit to Sharon Ct. brought new discoveries. Jerry, Bob Coltman, Craig Johnson, Dillon Bustin, Kendall Morse...it's a LONG list.

G'day Jerry, Kat,Larry, Uncle Tom Cobley and all,

Maybe the CD is getting to be old technology for what we really want - to hear what any other 'Catter with a song to sing sounds like ... so waht about an MP3 pool?

... MudNapster, as it were?

It would be feasible for computate 'Catters to squeeze down any tracks they have ... on CD, tape, computer file &c int an MP3 and that's small enough to e-mail to a central pool, along with some sort of speil and a biog.

Then we set up a file-sharing app (with everyone affirming that they are happy to supply that particular track .. and any registered 'Catter can listen to anyone that wants to provide a track (or 2 ... or more).

Just needs the right techno-nerd ...

Bob Bolton

Hi, McGrath: I've only had one experience with a compilation CD and I saw the problems with selection. There was an inner circle, an outer circle, and folks who were standing around outside the outer circle.

If this whole project ever goes through, there are ways to select material for CDs that can circumvent the insiders/outsiders perception, and the "not good enough" reality. Not every track submitted, or ever person submitting a track would necessarily make the "cut." You could do a CD that was a true sampler of the Diversity of Mudcatters music, from blues and country-tinged folk, to Celtic and Welsh. Maybe with a little gospel thrown in.

You could also do one with a theme, or a Thieme. Or several. I think of the Soutyhern Journey series that Lomax did, built around themes like Badman Ballads, work songs, spirituals, Songs of the Sea, etc.

I do think a sampler showing the diversity of Mudcatters would be great fun, though. You could get some Australian music done by Bob Bolton, and probably others I haven't heard. Same with Celtic and blues (Bobert comes to mind.)

As for how to do this, if I submitted something, I'd have to see if I could convert a tape to CD. I've done it with my computer, with fair success, but not for a long time. Others may not have the capacity, or know someone who can do it for them. I thought Waves were women in the Armed Forces. Shows you how unsophisticated I am. Probably a few more like me out there. I'd hate to see someone not considered because they could only submit a tape. But, I can see this being a LOT of work. It sounds like there are people who have the time and commitment to tackle it, though.

I think it's a wonderful idea.

Jerry

I think th eidea of a Mudcat compilation, naybe including some classic threads as well as songs, makes a lot of snese. Whether it would make any money is another matter, but it might make some, and could be done very cheaply.

Once a song is on tape it's not at all difficult to transfer it on a CD, and that makes it good and portable and easy for someone else to take them off and compile into a compilation CD.

The biggest problem would be deciding what to put on the compilation. I think the best way would be have some individual do it according to their individual tastes, rather than any kind of attempt at doing it by consensus or democracy. Not "the best of the Mudcat" but "X's personal choice".

There might be some hurt feelings I suppose, inevitable in that kind of thing, so you'd need someone with taste and a thick skin. I think anyone who would want to make those kind of choices probably isn't the right person to do it.

Audio CDs have 74 minutes' playing time, which is rather generous. If the rest of you could avoid doing thirty-verse ballads, I'll keep my contribution down to under two minutes!!!

Amergin and Kat - what software do I need to convert .wav to mp3 files and back? (Good point about the restrictions on email.) I'm willing to invest in it, if there's tried and proven software available.

I think this CD idea could be the way to achieve two goals at once:

1. Provide an easy way for everyone interested to hear other Mudcatters' music

2. Earn money to support the `Cat (I haven't seen a thread on this, but it should be common knowledge that CDs are one of the major ripoffs of all time, costing well under $2 to produce (this is an educated guess, your mileage may vary). So these could be sold at (by comparison) a bargain price, and the proceeds go to Max, for his Caribbean vacation (just kidding, BG).

I'm going skiing on Saturday, so I won't be back here `til Sunday... Keep those ideas coming!

Cheers,
Michael

I couldn't do all sixty, but I do have a nifty program thanks to anudder mudder which converts wavs to mp3 quite easily and I am on cable modem, so large files don't get bounced. I can also record to my hard drive from cassette tape, but I don't have a CD burner.

Jerry, if ya really wanna hear some more of us, join us in Paltalk some time. If you're interested holler and I'll help you with it. I'd love to hear you sing your own song, you know...my fav Handful of Songs, which spawned that incredible treasures thread? I like to support Caroline and Sandy, so I'll order your stuff right quick!

Now, ol' Bobert, what's this I hear about you having a tape? Ya keep telling me in the threads there's something you just love about me but this is the FIRST I hear about a tape!?**BG** I'll PM you with an addy and be willing to pay, if yer willin'...lol.

And, Frank? Same with you. I've heard so much of you in Paltalk and loved it all. If you've a tape, I'd dearly love to buy a copy.

BTW, Frank and Norton1, I heard a beautiful song today which sounded just like one either of you would do a fantastic job with...it was Michael Nesmith, the former Monkee, doing one called "Moon Over the Rio Grande." He did a really nice job of it. Am I jsut new to the song, do you all know it already? If not, I'll see what I can find.

At one point, Max was going to do a Mudcat CD complilation, but I don't know if that ever got moved to a front burner or not; probably not with the move and upgrade they are working on and all. I think if we all came up with one it'd be just grand!

thanks,

kat

Okay, Jerry's concerns are echoed by michealr with his lighthearted "Mudcat Insider Mafia". But, lets say that everyone who would like to contribute were to send Coyote Breath a PM indicating interest in submitting one or two songs. Well, if 60 Catters responded then C.B. (Coyote Breath) would report that number and that would be the initial pool. Lets say, @ 20 songs per C.D., that would mean that out of the initial pool, there would be 3 volumes of Cat-tunes to look forward to hearing. The order could be purely alphbetical or chosen by some creative random choice that with all the creative folks here should pose no problem. No if the vulumes were distributed thru Mudcat, then if there are any profits, they could go toward the cost of fresh litter for the Catbox or other expenses... I don't know... But, hey, the ol' bobert thinks it would be cool.

A Mudcat CD! Wotta concept! If it is possible, why not just have a dropdead date. Those who send something (to someone) by that date get put on the CD (Warts - as Jerry sez - and all!). Kinda scary, huh? but aren't we all 'catters (or are some of us 'mudders'?) living the free life? Ready for anything? Of course!

There was a thread a while back that seemed to suggest there wasn't a great need for expensive equipment and programs if the music was being taken from a pre-recorded source. We could send two numbers and let the decision be that at least one of them would get onto the CD. I'm up to doing some grunt work (whatever that might be) on this if anyone's interested.

Mudcat sampler CD - what a great idea! If people would e-mail me .wav files, I could easily put them together and burn CDs on a one-off basis. I also have Photoshop/Illustrator and could make the cover with that.

Of course the MIM (Mudcat Insider Mafia) will have to decide who gets on...*G*

Cheers,
Michael

Well, I doubt if I'd get on it... so I'd better start recruiting for the alternative version already!

So, who decides who gets on the CD, and who doesn't? I'll pass on that one...

Idea sounds good to me. I'm a techno-klutz, though.

I have been toying with the idea in PMs with, for example McGrath... How bout a centralized mudcat techno-nerd who we could all send ... say two tracks on CD, and have it mastered, burned, and sold to keep the M-cat in the cat-nip for awhile. Larry

IanB: I like your idea of a compilation. We talked briefly about doing that over at Tweedsblues but there weren't enough members and those memebers that we had were to technologically challenged to figure out how to do it. Here, most of the folk seem to have those shiny 3 digit I.Q.'s and all so it might be possible. From the folks I've heard talking about their music, I'm sure we could come up with several CD's of good stuff if everyone just had one offering. Anyone else have any particular ideas on this?....

Toledo, Oregon? I thought it ended in Ohio. I look forward to hearing you, Frank. If you're curious to hear what I've been doing recently with the Gospel Messengers, I'll send you a concert tape, warts and all.

Pay no attention to Ian B. He always sounds WAY better than he is willing to admit. His energy always amazes me. Doing very worthwhile stuff with his music, too, he is.

Don't include me in that, Jerry - you haven't heard the Easter album yet!

I still think a Mudcat compilation CD would be a great idea.

Hi, Fortunato. Sure don't want you to be out of the loop. Or anyone else. I may not be Sorcha Dorcha, and I don't have a CD to send to you, but I'd be glad to share a cassette of my last two albums with any Catters that send me a PM with their address. Truth is, Fortunato, we're ALL out of the loop. We all live in "hollers," and while we connect through Mudcat, our music doesn't always get shared. That's why I'm happy to share mine. And what does everyone else sound like. I'm trying to invision what Spaw sound like, or Gnu, or Kat Laughing and all the rest. I'm slowly getting to hear people like The Bobert, Sorcha Dorcha, NortonI and a couple of others... Ian B.. I'm assuming there won't be a fools rush to get copies of my last two albums, so I should be able to mail them off if anyone is interested. As Sian points out, I'm not new. Just got a couple of new fans. I've been performing since the early sixties, and did two albums for Folk Legacy, Handful of Songs on my own.

So, what do you sound like, Fortunato? My e-mail address is gospelmessengers@msn.com.

Jerry

Folk-Legacy, of course. That's if you want instant gratification. If you're patient, you can wait for the CD of Jerry with his wonderful group, the Gospel Messengers. Kathy (long-time fan)

Thanks so much, Larry & Art: You both already how much I enjoy your music. Sorcha Dorcha was a real eye-opener for me when I listened to the CD. It was the reason why I started "What Makes Folk Music American" thread. I must say, though. Nobody ever told me that my music was good for a long dive. And then you hit the water... :-)
