Whenever I get on Paltalk, the FIRST thing I do is click on the "L" at the top of a column, for locked rooms, which gathers all the locked rooms together at the top of the display. I look them over for Mudcat Snug Room and the Beginner Banjo room, and go to one of them if it's open.

If neither of them is open I will click on the "V" for voice at the top of the next column, which puts the room display back into descending size order.

I think scan down for a room with "Live" in the title. The Live rooms, if they've been open for any reasonable period of time, are usually at the top of the display, being larger than most, as people come into them and stay.

Only problem with this second, size-based strategy is that as the room gets bigger the line of those waiting to sing and play gets longer. If I have a choice between two Live rooms I will usually choose the smaller.

We've had much fun in KatRose's room (Live Music With KatRose, I believe) and Acoustic Guitars Live. Marvelous groups.

But never as much fun as in the Mudcat Song Circle. Hey, so we're picky.

A number of us make a point of inviting those we 'know' from other venues when one of the MC rooms is open. I also make a point of giving the Mudcat URL now and then, especially when the text chat gives a good lead-in, such as questions about lyrics or general knowledge of folk and/or blues music.

Do y'all drop people a hint to come check out Mudcat, either the DT, forum, or on PalTalk, too?

The people at Gospel and Bluegrass couldn't be friendlier. Lots of talent too and live music. Although some play recordings - can be fun especially when they dig out stuff from the 40s and 50s.

The live rooms are great, I especially enjoy Jon's mandolin playing. Liked one of the songs dw performs so much (Lie to Me) I went and bought a Dewey Burns CD.

Also some wonderful blues rooms, House of Blues is one that's open a lot in the evenings. Last night I was in a Big Band, Swing, Jazz and Blues room that was just a whole lot of fun.

Of course the great thing about Paltalk is there are rooms to suit a whole range of genres. I am definitely a Paltalk addict these days.

And then there's the Mudcat Snug, which pops up from time to time (usually on a Thursday evening about 2100 GMT 1600 EST) It is listed as an adult site, Password is dt and all are welcome.

"Guitarwars" can be fun, as can "live music for seriously schitfaced musicians" (sic).

I find some rooms, even live rooms, are sometimes cringe-making (possibly because of good old British reserve), but overall, PalTalk is a good thing.

I enjoy it, anyway.

Alan

Jon is a big contributor to the music on paltalk. To find roomds, first: check the box that says show adult rooms (even many mudcat rooms are adult rooms to accomodate songs that refer to "roosters" for example), and look for rooms that have the words "live" or "acoustic" or "guitar" or "folk" or "DW" in them. If you find some people you like, you can right click their name and add them to your pal list. You may also search for peoples names and add them. You will then see them when they are on, and you can PM them and ask them to invite you to the room you are in. While there may be a fair amount of shenanigans going n from time to time, there is a large group of wonderful people and some fantastic players. In time, you will form friendships there and wind up with a great place to go for fun and music. In case you haven't gathered, I like pal alot.

P.S. And don't we wish Margaret V had more time to play on pal. One of the greatest talents I have ever heard.

Just about any of the live rooms. It really is a case of looking around and seeing what is open. Often someone will open one and maybe if numbers get high, another room may open. The are lots of these rooms but typically only 1-3 are open at any time. There is a pretty large cross-over of people in these rooms so if you've been around a bit, your always likely to see and hear a number familiar and friendly faces including 'catters. The music tends to be more accoustic pop orientated than anything else with mostly singer guitar players but there is quite a range of live music - folk wise, I seem to be welcomed playing tunes on mandolin and occasionally melodeon, Margaret V has played harp, DaveO sometimes uses banjo, singing accapella is welcomed...

Folk rooms, currently there is Seteve/Nortons Mudcat Song Circle on a Sunday, Frank/Toledo opens as and when and runs a great room, Alison has been known to open "Celtic Friends", a room that is folk orientated but allows recordings.

Other rooms: Once in a while I pop into "The Squid Jigging Ground" which has a bit of chat and (mostly) recorded music - no prizes for guessing where the bulk of the music is from...

What are some of the rooms you have enjoyed? What's going on in there? When are they open?
