I am Interested in getting some background information on the Landing at Louisburg hooked rug that aunt Lilly made and is currently hanging in the Glace Bay library. I would like to know who designed the rug, the date aunt Lilly hooked it etc so I may make up a short information plaque to hang next to the rug so others will know who created this masterpiece.

This is a great song about the island that I love so well! The first three verses shown in George's post were written by Lilly Walsh. The last two verses from above Guest were written by Charlie MacKinnon. Charlie set it to music and recorded it on an lp, "Songs Of My Cape Breton Home".
Lilly and Charlie colaborated to compose many songs of Cape Breton: The Ghost Of Bras d'or , The Legend of Kelly's Mountain, Twilight On The Cabot Trail, My Cape Breton Home, Black Around The Eyes and others as well.

THE WATERS OF IONA

Far from the scene of childhood days, it was my lot to roam
Across the sea to a foreign land, far from my Highland home,
In dreams, I saw the village where my sad heart longed to be,
Where the waters of Iona rippled down to the deep blue sea

The village ferry in the stream, the lads and lasses there,
In Highland kilt were dancing while the bagpipes filled the air,
The lowing of the cattle came from ev'ry glen and lea
Where the waters of Iona rippled down to the deep blue sea

How often in my youthful days, I roamed around the shore,
With my little Highland lassie, Bonnie Mary from Bras d'Or
She sleeps beneath the daisies, guarded by the maple trees,
Where the waters of Iona rippled down to the deep blue sea

Now often on the battlefield my thoughts would take me home
To the village of Iona oh so far across the foam
The memories came to comfort me now in my dreams I'd see
The waters of Iona rippled down to the deep blue sea

Well the day of peace was dawning; we were sailing over the foam
And I hung my pipes and tartan kilt on the dear old walls of home
I thanked my heavenly father as I walked across the leaves
Where the waters of Iona rippled down to the deep blue sea
Where the waters of Iona rippled down to the deep blue sea
Where the waters of Iona rippled down to the deep blue sea

You're very welcome, Joyce. Have fun with it. Sing it with heart and soul. It's got great meaning for us from Cape Breton, and deserves the best.
