the midi files referred to above only give the tune of the chorus, because ONLY THE CHORUS IS THE OFFICIAL NATIONAL ANTHEM OF IRELAND.

there are 3 original and one later verse, all originally written in English, and OFFICIALLY translated much later by Liam O'Rinn

DESPOTS!? I thought it refered to the deposit on the return of carry out bottles of beer! You mean there is meaning to the song other than, go home lads its closing time!?!?! And such a warlike song! And very likely you're right Noreen - but it equally could be referring to "the despots" later in the chorus.

I prefer to take it as referring in the first place to the diaspora - and in a modern context equally applicable to immigrants from elsewhere, refugees and such. But it's an ambiguous line.

Kevein, I always assumed it referred to supporters from the Irish diaspora, who are also soldiers... whose lives are pledged to Ireland.

I've recordings of this song by Dermot O'Brien and by Fighting Men From Crossmaglen. If you're looking for the tune on the verses, either of these would do.

Now here is a query I've got about the meaning of one line in the chorus.

Soldiers are we
whose lives are pledged to Ireland;
Some have come
from a land beyond the wave.
Sworn to be free,
No more our ancient sire land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the gap of danger
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannons' roar and rifles peal,
We'll chant a soldier's song

And the query is this. "Some have come
from a land beyond the wave" - now does this refer to enemies from England, or does it refer to supporters from the Irish diaspora? The words could mean either, but I'd imagine at some time Peadar Kearney would have been likely to indicate what he meant.

They play the shorter version with just the chorus when it's the start of a match. I've heard it sung often enough, with the verses. I was surprised to be unable to find the tune to the verses anywhere - the words are on numerous sites.

Not all the words as it happens - there's a fourth verse Preadar Kearney came up with in 1937 "in answer to a request thatteh Irish of the Six North Eastern Counties couild register a protest against the British-planned Partition of Ulster". That doesn't seem to be on any of the sites I've seen.

Sharon, all the MIDIs listed provide the chorus only (just in case you couldn't work out what fitted where).

It's interesting that in all the links above, apart from Brendy's, the phrase bhearna bhaoil in the English lyrics has been translated into 'gap of danger'. While this may be the literal translation, it means a lot more than that symbolically (see Brendy's link), which is why that Irish phrase was used in the original English lyrics. Anyway, gap of danger doesn't scan!

Onlt thing is, none of those give the full tune, and I haven't found it anywher one the web - they just have the chorus, which is what is used at matches and so forth.

But the tune for the verse is a jaunty one, and it balances out the rather solemn chorus, making for a better song.

Written in 1907, words written by Peader Kearney, and the tune put to it by his friend Paddy Heeney, who played it on the melodian that night.

The words were first printed in 1912, and by then it was already widely sung. (And Paddy Heeney had died by then). First printed with the tune in December 1916 - by which time it was already the de facto National Anthem, having been sung in all the internment camps.

In other words, the same type of folk process by which songs emerge among us today. (And the English words came first, as you'd expect with a Dublin man.)

According to this page (The Origin of The Irish National Anthem), it was composed in 1907 by Peadar Ó Cearnaigh (Kearney) and by Patrick Heaney; the song lyrics were published by Bulmer Hobson in 'Irish Freedom' in 1912; and the music was arranged and published by Victor Herbert in New York in December 1916.

Help Help! Can anyone provide me with a phonetic version of the Chorus of the Irish National anthem in gaelic? I can make a stab at it but it would be great if i could get a professional job! Needed for one of the kids at my school as he is going to Galway on a rugby tour. Only problem is they leave tomorrow.
