The newly released movie "We Were Soldiers" has a song, part of the lyrics being "lay me doon on the caul, caul groon, where afore many mair have gone." It was very scottish. Looking at the soundtrack listing there is a song called Sgt. Mackenzie by a Joseph Kilna Mackenzie and I could only get an excerpt from that song which had just bagpipes in it. It seemed to be the same song though. I would like to no more about this song, the artist, the writer, the lyrics, the history etc. It was very evocative and very sad.

Joe Kilna MacKenzie is a member of the band Clann an Drumma from Glasgow. The lyrics are on the band's website on this page. It contains the note "These lyrics are not to be used in any way, without the expressed written permission of Joseph Kilna MacKenzie." Therefore I have not copied the lyrics here, although I am not sure that it wouldn't be perfectly legal to do so.

The web site also contains some information about the author's great-grandfather, who was the inspiration for the song.
