Since Guy Clark wasn't born till 1941, it seems unlikely that he wrote "Great Speckled Bird" in 1934.
"Great Speckled Bird" was written, in 1934, by Reverend Guy Smith.

Elton Britt's "There's A Star-Spangled Banner Waving Somewhere" sounds like another variant of the tune too.

I know a few spanish lyrics, it starts something like this;
Te escribe una carta y no me contestaste
te llame y vias cambiado telefon
pero tengo unas palabras que decirte y las puse
aqui en esta cancion. I'm trying to learn the rest.

No disrespect intended, but I sense great spoof potential here.

You wouldn't read my letter if I wrote you
You told me not to call you on the phone
But my internet has ceased to work completely
And I'm feeling very cut off and alone.

Thanks, Guest noahelge--it's never too late as far as I'm concerned to get an answer to a question on lyrics.   And who knows, maybe I'm not the only one who might be interested.

I think The GReat Speckled Bird, an Anglo hymn, predates "Blue Eyes", "Wild Side" and "It Wasn't God..." by a good measure.

"Tu sabes que te quiero vida mia,
Tu sabes que yo sufro por tu amor,
Pero tu sigues viviendo en las cantinas,
Y yo me estoy muriendo de dolor."

I hope it's not too late...

Thanks so much, Jim and Guest for the help with this song in Spanish. "Pero tu sigues viviendo en las cantinas" sounds just right. Now I just need one more line completed and I think I can get that. Mudcat is just wonderful--such an incredible wealth of information and people generous with it.

In another thread Ron Davies requested some Spanish lyrics to THE WILD SIDE OF LIFE as sung by Freddy Fender on his album "Before the Next Teardrop Falls." (Fender sings in both English and Spanish.) Ron's tentative transcription goes like this:

Tu sabes que te quiero y ----- ----- (2 words?)
Tu sabes que yo sufro por tu amor
Pero tu ---- ----- (2 words?) en las cantinas
Y yo me estoy muriendo de dolor

If anyone has the lyrics, I recommend you post them here, rather than the other thread, in order to avoid splitting the discussion of this song.

To my ears, another song seems very similar to the tune of THINKING/BLUE EYES....

Tho' the Chorus/Bridge is certainly different, the verses...are VERY CLOSE...

There's a Star-Spangeled Banner waving somewhere In a distant land so many miles away Only Uncle Sam's Great Heroes get to go there Where I wish that I could also live someday.

Complete lyrics were posted earlier in a different thread.

And here's another variation:

SONG OF SONGS
Recorded by Boxcar Willie and Willie Nelson
Written by Vern Stovall, Bill Palmer & Lloene Martin (aka Boxcar Willie)

To the tune of: "I'M THINKING TONIGHT OF MY BLUE EYES"

How I love that old melody they're playing
I heard it in so many different songs
It made stars out of country music singers
And somehow it just keeps playin' on.

Oh! I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes
Seems to me it's been around since time began
It was there with our soldiers during wartime
And right today, we still hear it, now and then.

Roy Acuff was a young country singer
His records were just starting to be heard
That old tune took him right up to stardom
On The Wings Of The Great Speckled Bird.

Hank Thompson is a country music legend
He sang western swing and songs of peace and strife
That same tune gave old Hank the break he needed
On a record called The Wild Side Of Life.

A young girl made the world stop and listen
Kitty Wells was that young singer's name
It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels
That melody rang clear as country rain.

Oh! those notes must come straight out of heaven
In so many different songs they were the same
I know someday they'll be etched in gold forever
And placed in the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

TAG: And placed in the Country Music Hall Of Fame.

Subject: Lyr Add: THERE'S A GRAND OLE OPRY SHOW PLAYING...
From: Gene
Date: 28 Mar 98 - 08:39 PM

Here's another variation of the song.

THERE'S A GRAND OLE OPRY SHOW PLAYING SOMEWHERE
Recorded by Red Johnson
Words and music by Bud Auge and Red Johnson

To the tune of: "I'm Thinking Tonight Of My Blue Eyes."

CHORUS
There's a Grand Ole Opry Show playing somewhere
In a distant land so many miles away
Only country music's greatest get to go there
Where I wish that I could also go someday.

I'd see Williams, Horton, Patsy Cline and Copas
Hawkshaw Hawkins and Jack Anglin, too
There's a Grand Ole Opry Show playing somewhere
In a distant land so far beyond the blue.

As the Velvet curtains open in the twilight
Choirs of angels sings the sweetest harmony
As the show goes on in Hillbilly Heaven
What a beautiful sight, it must be.

Jimmie Rodgers is the M.C. of the evening
One by one, he calls each artist from the wings
To perform and do the songs they've made so famous
As the melodies are played on golden strings.

There's a Grand Ole Opry Show playing somewhere
On a starlit stage so many miles away
Only country music's greatest get to go there
Where I wish that I could also go someday.

"I'm dreaming tonight of my blue eyes" was recorded in 1928 or 1929 by the Carter Family. It was recorded later (between 1933 and 1946) by Gene Autry.

You can find the Carter version on the album: "My Clinch Mountain Home" which is part of Rounder Records issue of their complete Victor Recordings.

The Gene Autry version is on the Columbia album: "The Essential Gene Autry" which is part of their Country Classics series. It covers the dates 1933--1946. He says he is "thinking" of his blue eyes instead of dreaming, but the melody is the same.

I think Great Speckled Bird came after Blues Eyes and before Wide Side and its answer.

The tune started out, as far as I know, with a 1930's country hit called I'm dreaming tonight of my Blue Eyes. Anybody have that one? Or an earlier example of this fine melody?

This thread wouldn't be complete without mentioning "It Wasn't God Who Made Honky Tonk Angels" sung by Kitty Wells. It is an answer to this song from the woman's point of view. IMHO it is one of her best.

Hello Harold. Here's the lyrics for Wild Side Of Life.

THE WILD SIDE OF LIFE
(W. Warren--A. A. Carter)
As recorded by Hank Thompson and His Brazos Valley Boys, 1952.

You [D] wouldn't read my letter if I [G] wrote you
You [A] asked me not to call you on the [D] phone
But there's something I'm wanting to [G] tell you
So I [A] wrote it in the words of this [D] song.

CHORUS:
I didn't know God made honky tonk [G] angels
I [A] might have known you'd never make a [D] wife
You gave up the only one that ever [G] loved you
And went [A] back to the WILD SIDE OF [D] LIFE.

The glamor of the gay nightlife has lured you
To the places where the wine and liquor flow
Where you wait to be anybody's baby
And forget the truest love you'll ever know.

CHORUS

HI JOE...I gotta ask Greg about that...apparently the search engine LOOKS for words in the SONG TEXT and not the title. SONG TITLES are entered as: WILD_SIDE_OF_LIFE.

I just got into the habit of searching for 2 or 3 CONNECTED KEY WORDS that I know are in a song and avoid using any words with punctuation...
