Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wild Side of Life (Hank Thompson) From: PHJim Date: 29 Jul 23 - 10:47 AM Since Guy Clark wasn't born till 1941, it seems unlikely that he wrote "Great Speckled Bird" in 1934. "Great Speckled Bird" was written, in 1934, by Reverend Guy Smith. |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Wild Side of Life (Carter, Warren) From: Jim Dixon Date: 25 Mar 06 - 02:44 PM In another thread Ron Davies requested some Spanish lyrics to THE WILD SIDE OF LIFE as sung by Freddy Fender on his album "Before the Next Teardrop Falls." (Fender sings in both English and Spanish.) Ron's tentative transcription goes like this: Tu sabes que te quiero y ----- ----- (2 words?) Tu sabes que yo sufro por tu amor Pero tu ---- ----- (2 words?) en las cantinas Y yo me estoy muriendo de dolor If anyone has the lyrics, I recommend you post them here, rather than the other thread, in order to avoid splitting the discussion of this song. |
Subject: RE: Wild Side of Life From: Gene Date: 29 Mar 98 - 03:43 PM To my ears, another song seems very similar to the tune of THINKING/BLUE EYES....
Tho' the Chorus/Bridge is certainly different, the verses...are VERY CLOSE...
There's a Star-Spangeled Banner waving somewhere In a distant land so many miles away Only Uncle Sam's Great Heroes get to go there Where I wish that I could also live someday.
Complete lyrics were posted earlier in a different thread. |

Subject: RE: Wild Side of Life From: murray@mpce.mq.edu.au Date: 28 Mar 98 - 08:19 PM "I'm dreaming tonight of my blue eyes" was recorded in 1928 or 1929 by the Carter Family. It was recorded later (between 1933 and 1946) by Gene Autry. You can find the Carter version on the album: "My Clinch Mountain Home" which is part of Rounder Records issue of their complete Victor Recordings. The Gene Autry version is on the Columbia album: "The Essential Gene Autry" which is part of their Country Classics series. It covers the dates 1933--1946. He says he is "thinking" of his blue eyes instead of dreaming, but the melody is the same. Murray |
Subject: RE: Wild Side of Life From: dulcimer Date: 28 Mar 98 - 08:10 PM I think Great Speckled Bird came after Blues Eyes and before Wide Side and its answer. |
Subject: RE: Wild Side of Life From: dick greenhaus Date: 28 Mar 98 - 02:07 PM The tune started out, as far as I know, with a 1930's country hit called I'm dreaming tonight of my Blue Eyes. Anybody have that one? Or an earlier example of this fine melody? |

Subject: Lyr/Chords Add: THE WILD SIDE OF LIFE From: Newfoundlander Date: 26 Mar 98 - 01:34 PM Hello Harold. Here's the lyrics for Wild Side Of Life. THE WILD SIDE OF LIFE (W. Warren--A. A. Carter) As recorded by Hank Thompson and His Brazos Valley Boys, 1952. You [D] wouldn't read my letter if I [G] wrote you You [A] asked me not to call you on the [D] phone But there's something I'm wanting to [G] tell you So I [A] wrote it in the words of this [D] song. CHORUS: I didn't know God made honky tonk [G] angels I [A] might have known you'd never make a [D] wife You gave up the only one that ever [G] loved you And went [A] back to the WILD SIDE OF [D] LIFE. The glamor of the gay nightlife has lured you To the places where the wine and liquor flow Where you wait to be anybody's baby And forget the truest love you'll ever know. CHORUS |
Subject: RE: Wild Side of Life From: Gene Date: 26 Mar 98 - 12:37 PM HI JOE...I gotta ask Greg about that...apparently the search engine LOOKS for words in the SONG TEXT and not the title. SONG TITLES are entered as: WILD_SIDE_OF_LIFE.
I just got into the habit of searching for 2 or 3 CONNECTED KEY WORDS that I know are in a song and avoid using any words with punctuation...
