Date: 12 Mar 02 - 07:04 AM

As promised, a quiz for St Patrick's Day.
As before, **Please do not answer in this thread**
I can be PMd for answers, or confirmations.
This thread can include comments on degree of difficulty, or the usual "I got 15 in two minutes".
Answers will not be posted here until after the festivities, but are available sooner.
If anyone wants to use this for a St Patricks celebration the feel free. I will be photocopying it for my local club, and selling the pages for charity.
Contact me first, just to make sure I agree with your answers!!

1 What name is given to a humorous poem of 5 lines with the rhyme scheme AABBA ?
2 What is the name of the Australian ranch, central to the book "The Thorn Birds", by Colleen McCullough, seen on TV starring Richard Chamberlain ?
3 As what character did Richard Chamberlain first achieve fame ?
4 Who, or what, is described as having "A leg at every corner, balancing his head, and a tail to let you know which end he wanted to be fed" ?
5 Which character was played by Richard Gere as the star of "An Officer and a Gentleman" ?
6 Who "was lovely and fair, like a rose of the summer" ?
7 How, in Ireland, does one obtain the gift of eloquence and flattery ?
8 What do Trey Parker & Matt Stone manage to do in (almost) every episode of their TV show ?
9 What name is given to a cord supplying fuel to a flame by capillary action ?
10 The Mediterranean tree Quercus Suber provides what material to the brewing trade ?
11 What tune is usually used for "Danny Boy" ?
12 Which of Ruth Rendell's detectives is played on TV by George Baker ?

14 Who, or what, caused all the young ladies of Killaloo to wear bustles ?
15 Who is Britain's best known flautist ?
16 Who had hit records with "Runaway" & "Little Town Flirt" ?
17 What is it polite to do before entering a room ?
18 What was the Latin name for Odysseus ?
19 Who starred in "Alexander's Ragtime Band" (1938), "Jesse James" ('39) & "The Mark of Zorro" ('40) ?
20 What name is given to a flat bottomed boat, propelled with the aid of a long pole ?

Just to repeat, Use this as you wish, but please, no answers here!

You mean - a quiz that I can answer some/most of the questions and I can't show off by printing my answers. Shame. Must be relatively easy if I can get them.

Thanks

Julie

Nigel, many thanks for the aork you are putting in on your excellent quizzes.I'm confused by Q9:is the obvious answer a place in Ireland? Anda query on Q13, doesn't the song refer to theplace in Wales rather than the Irish one?

Got 11-feel real dumb. I think a couple (12 & 13) would be impossible for a Yank to get. Just on the edge of getting Thornbirds Ranch. Sorcha, Jeri's right about 17----Your on the edge too. FUN!

12 is hardly impossible if you read Ruth Rendell, which I do. I'm still dumb about 17. I can think of a lot of answers which involve feet, shoes, hats but nothing clicks.

clues.... 17 ... think of tacky souvenir shops and moving statues

13... is probably in the dt.... "didn't we have a lovely time....."

but I'll never get the Ruth Rendell one

My error. No.9 is in Scotland, Question should have been, "How should one keep a lamp with a cord supplying fuel to its flame to burn with no excess smoke?"
This then gives a suitable (similar) answer.
8 shouldn't be impossible for a N.American as it's not a British show.
13 (US version) "Take a ride to this place, in Maine" For confirmation, vectis has PMd me with 20 correct. But I don't know vectis's geographical location.

I managed to get #13 before the fairly obvious hints. I hang around in uk.music.folk and absorb stuff sometimes. They don't talk much about TV shows, though. I still have a good solid 9! (whoopee...)

Amazing how much trouble 17 is causing. Is this a comment on the standard of etiquette among 'catters.
And no, my comment on "etiquette" is not a reference to the W S Gilbert ballad of that name.
"The Ballyshannon foundered off the coast of Cariboo"

although, it (the ballad) could have referred to Q 16 !!

Wasn't that the one about the pub landlord called Julio (often mispronounced) who only served sugar cane liqour. When he was a little late paying the lease for his pinball machine the company got upset and wrote several reminders. The Local paper only got the story from a soused client, and the headline read...
"Bally nag rum Oolia"
