Here is a web site that gives a detailed description of the BBC Programme "Time and Tune" from 1972. It identifies the song* as SLEEPING BEAUTY, and gives the first 2 lines. The editor remarks: "To the best of my knowledge, no recordings of this unit have been kept in the BBC archives."

* That is, the song initially requested in this thread. I wish we could keep discussion in each thread limited to one song only, to avoid confusion.

I was trying to remember this song recently and learnt it in infant school. I think these are the right words. It is Sleeping Beauty but not sure what from.


On the christening day of a child princess, the most beautiful ever seen,
Came a party of guests to the palace feast by order of king and queen.
Six good fairies danced for her, waved their magic spells,
Gave the child their wondrous gift, wished the princess well.

But a wicked old witch they did not invite was angered to prophesy

Thanks, Jim! I followed your link and bought a copy from Amazon. Sure enough it has this song in it, but sadly not another one that was in the same booklet, BBC Time and Tune, Autumn 1972, which had the words:

'Then a prince shall awaken the fair princess, his lips on her brow he will softly press, they'll live ever after in happiness, so dry those tears.'

I'd still love to get hold of a copy of the actual Sleeping Beauty booklet.

WorldCat lists a book called Time and tune songbook : forty songs taken from the BBC's music programme for schools Time and Tune. Follow the links and you might be able to find a copy in a local library. (I don't know whether it contains the song you're looking for.)

This is all I can remember. It was in BBC “Time and Tune” for schools booklet (Sleeping Beauty), Autumn 1972. I have been trying to get hold of a copy for years, but to no avail.

Can't say for sure - I didn't learn this song myself - it was something my sister sang.

It does sound like it is about Sleeping Beauty - I'm sure there is a nasty character in the song somewhere - could be the wicked witch.

I may have learned it in French. Does it start about how small she is and is guarded by a duenna, or whatever the word might have been? Is there any looking into pools and seeing birch trees or a swan reflected? I'm trying to think of other images from that longago memory...
