From: Hamish

Hiya:

I've just had a 'phone call from the landlady of the White Bear in Rickmansworth who wants to stage a "Folk & Ale" weekend on the spring bank holiday 3rd to 6th May. Any ideas and/or offers of help or contributions welcomed, but I suggest something like:

- open mic session Friday night 3rd - singaround and/or session Sunday afternoon - general palaver with Morris dancing and whatever Monday afternoon, plus...?

They can supply free beer(s) for performers, and a PA. Sunshine too (well, that's what she said...)

Post to this thread or reply to me mailto:hamish@lombardy.clara.net

Cheers

Hamish

Oh, golly, Nutty, I don't for a moment think Ricky'll be on that sort of scale! Go for it, and have a great time!

Linda and I could well be interested - could posibly bring the boat.

The only problem is that it clashes with Canalway Cavalcade at Little Venice and Pete Thompson and all that mob usually go there.

Refresh of message, and progress report...

From a standing start six days ago, we've built up a decent head of steam. We've got three quality singers, plus interest from a number of morris sides. I reckon it's a runner. Any more interest gratefully received, however.

e-mails to hamish@lombardy.clara.net or via this thread

Another refresh and progress report.

Green light! We have Phoenix Morris confirmed. And a web site here so we must be serious!

I'd still like to hear from anyone else who can contribute, however, espcially as regards the session on Sunday night. Sessions are not my core competency as it were.

Onwards!

Aren't Phoenix at Little Venice, then ? Mike Stimpson's usually there trying to sell insurance policies !

Anyway Linda and I are planning to make for some of the time - we'll probably be at LV for most of the rest.

Oh dear, sounds like the clash is down to changes in dates. I'll be at Upton too, 'cos I'm booked, but the canal festival at Ricky, and White Bear sessions, used to coincide with the Steam on the Met weekend before the late May Bank Holiday (Chippenham/ Bampton)weekend.

Kitty

Refresh, and update.

Things are coming together very nicely: we've got a pretty full programme, including Anahata who is putting together the session for the Sunday. Full details are maintained at the official web site, but in brief, they are:

  • Friday 3rd, evening - open mic/singaround. Your host, the almost quite good Hamish Currie. Featuring many of the best of local singers, all are welcome to strut their acoustic stuff through a professional pa.
  • Saturday 4th, evening - a band, tba
  • Sunday 5th, evening - a traditional music session. Led by the fabulous Anahata this is a bar session featuring traditional English dance music, but with forays into the Gallic fringes. All traditional musicians are welcome to join in: bring your fiddles, melodeons, whistles...
  • Monday 6th, afternoon and evening - Morris dancers - we have Phoenix Morris confirmed; plus Hamish Currie, John Breeze and Chris Amos sing stuff.
Hope loads of 'Catters can be there. I'm getting a very good feeling about this...

Refresh...

...and some more details now posted on the website including the Saturday night band - Carolyn Robson and Andy Johnstone - and some of the guest beers. We're also trying to work out something with Woodside Morris for the Friday evening. Watch this space...

Aw Jeez - I dunno! But you could try asking Diane who's the pub's contact on all things Folk & Ale. Her number is 01923 772381.

Incidentally, we've also got Woodside Morris confirmed to do two sets on the Friday evening. Update to web site will probably be there before you've read this!

p.s. thanks, Jonno, for your helpful suggestion. It was well meant, I'm sure ;^) Or is that "Nonjo was Jonno (landed)"?

Thanks John - I probably would, but I'm in the middle of sorting out a new Boat Safety Certificate for Ursa Minor - and the caravan doesn't float as well as the boat does.

Anyway - I'll give the landlady a call - otherwise I'll have to find a commercial site somewhere near - it's too far to drive from Mottingham each day.

I'll probably be there without Linda as she's got family commitments.

May be there Friday & Sunday as we are fairly close in Watford, but can't do the Saturday as have promised a friend that we'll go to Norwich for the day to help with a Mayday celebration there. Although originally planned by the local trades council & the local branch of UNISON for international workers day, since a couple of the driving forces behind the event are enthusiastic folkies it now involves a beer tent, singing and an evening concert with Rob Johnson

Little mention has been made of the Ale side of he event so I will now reveal what tipple is on sale.

As well as their usual Green King IPA, Abbot Ale, Speckled Hen and Ruddles County there will be; Bateman's XXXB (4.8 %) Brain's SA (4.2%) Smile's Heritage (5.2 %), Wadworth 6X and four more yet to be confirmed. Sampler trays of four ales will be available foe £2.

On the Monday there is a Barbeque. As well as the three main acts there will be a number of support acts.

Thanks again to all who participated. When it was good it was great, and when it was bad it was... still pretty good!

Photos now posted to the Ricky web site.

Over and out...

(Unless, of course I see you at Tudor Folk Club or the Blue Ball singaround)

Cheers
