If anyone can find a proper link to Folkworks summer schools, I'd be very grateful! always have problems finding it each year. It's never in an easily-findable place on the Sage website, and doesn't seem to have its own site.

It's time to get make plans for Folk College 2010, and I wondered if anyone on this list is going. It's a great lineup! There will be traditional American, Blues and everything from Celtic to Cajun and even Chinese. I'll be there, fulfilling my usual role as "instrument storage goddess." This year my husband is going to. Here's the link:

Susan- All I can say concerning the Getaway and Folk College is that I would love to attend them both and since I cannot I'm glad to encourage others to try them.

I've had my heart set on Meadowlark right here in Maine for a few years, too. Although I know it's no more likely to be possible for me this year than are either of the aforementioned programs, I encourage others to enjoy the wealth of musical skill and opportunity available there.

Yup, the all-night jam in one of the lounges can easily be an all-night sing in one of the other spaces. There are after-concert workshoppy thingies also, that I believe may or may not be organized/assigned ahead of time. Interest in one of those is bound to grab organizers' interest.

I have not been to the Getaway, so I can't say how they are similar or different-- anyone else care to say? I CAN say that frequent attendees at FC are as welcoming to newcomers as anyone could want.

Barry could easily do several singing workshops at once, but I think he wants to sing with others more than teach a workshop. I've had the pleasure hearing him sing as well as having sung along with him in South Portland. I still urge anyone interested in more singing to talk with the presenters, including Cindy and Grey.

I just checked the schedule and there is at least one singing workshop in every time slot. Also, informal arrangements could be made with workshop singers outside of the schedule. I see that Pete Peterson and Kellie Allen are only scheduled to give one singing workshop, but I would bet you could talk them into one or more informal song sessions when they're not scheduled or at night. I mention Pete and Kellie because I know them well, but the same is probably true with some, if not all, of the other fine singers they have on staff this year.

I was on staff a couple of years ago and have to say that the Simple Gifts folks have the Folk College run like a well-oiled machine. The ratio of singing to instrumental sessions is probably due to the attendees' interests. They solicit lots of feedback and take it very seriously. Talk to Linda, Karen and Rachel (Simple Gifts) about it.

Barry- there do seem to be more instrumental workshops listed. I'm interested in both, so it looks fine to me. If you'd like to see more opportunities for singing, perhaps you'd want to contact the organizers with questions about this year's opportunities or suggestions for another year.

Barry,

   They usually have several workshops for singers..it varies from year to year. As far as concerts go, the year I attended, they had those who were presenting the workshops do a concert the night before the actual workshops began and then on Sunday, several little groups had formed from the various workshops and they put on a concert. Seems to me there were staff concerts at night too. Definitely a worthwhile experience!

I read through the posts & only saw a brief mention of (Carter Family Songs & Songwriting) song related workshops, nothing on vocals, singing sessions or concerts. Was this because your preferences are more towards tunes & group playing or was there not musck in the way of voice? It sounds great for the musician but not so much for the singer. Could out fill in infor on the ocal part of the college if there was one.

In Britain, there is a fantastic organisation called Folkworks (linked to the University course in Newcastle).

They run excellent junior/youth/adult summer schools with professional tutors including (in the past) Chris Wood, Andy Cutting, John Dipper, Robert Harbron etc etc.

I'll say more later, cuz I'se tahred. I left a few hours early to get a jump on the drive-- right now the student band concert ought to be wrapping up. ABout 20 bands formed for the weekend to perform for each other, strangers joining up to see how band formation, song choice, and arranging really works. Just one small part of the total weekend-- mostly it was workshops and jams, NOT with band mates but just free-form jams by speed or genre, and great workshops on EVERYTHING.

Anyway I just back from folk college. I'se so smart now I gots a .MFed on mah naime. But I never did find Beth and her daughter! Lotta people there!

Folk collij was good. An acquaintance there saw me as I was about to leave and asked how I was-- it had been a late night jamming and he'd gone to bed early. "I'm asleep!" I said. "Me too!" he agreed. "But I'm having a very good dream!" I replied.

It was a total immersion weekend for all, and it was weird being in a place where everything was geared to how musicans are wired. It was ALL planned by musicians, a trio of smart ladies who play in a band together.

I should get there early on the registration day for the pre-workshop jams, and I am bringing gospel resources in case an afterh-hours gospel jam forms. I was glad to see a black gospel group to be discussed as one of the lectures. (See stuff Jeff Zolten is presenting, and his staff description!)

This oughtta be good! I'll be coming, probably, from a road trip to Chicago where I will have numerous opportunities to play with strangers.... which ought to do me some good I hope! *G* I mean play music of course! *G*

Apart from the Uni course at Newcastle I doubt there is a folk music course other than the excellent commercial weekends run in Witney (et al) called "Fiddles at Witney" and "Melodeons ditto" and at least four others but not curiously enough a "Bodhrans at Witney"
so what has Witney got against the honourable drum?
