Subject: The Ballad of Enron From: GUEST,David Davis, vorblesnak@yahoo.com Date: 18 Mar 02 - 10:59 AM Lyrics are below, but this is my rant space. I write more than anything else, and one day heard the news and came up with this song. The music is Big John by Jimmy Dean. A group of local talent liked the words and asked to record it, which they did ... now the rant everyone is afraid of it. Some for the words, some because of the cover song. I seem to remember that there is court law allowing the use of a tune in a song that is a parody. It is not a copywrite issue as they new song created is original. Anyone want to jump into this with more input? Anyone been here before? The words. Gonna tell you all bout a Ponzi scheme From the state of Texas and points between Twas a big machine with the power on An the boys who ran her called her ENRON The front was a business founded in gas Building pipelines made to last Solid as a rock they couldn't go wrong The perfect front to hang a Ponzi on ENRON They split some stock and pumped it higher Hid the losses and stoked the fires Changed the laws so nothin was wrong Bought it short and sold it long ENRON With the first five billion they bought some more With the second five they bought the store In a business built wanton greed They hoped to make them all come plead with ENRON They drove the golden state to ruin Influenced the laws with their energy doins Bought some pols and a president too Just enough to see them through ENRON When they had to show just what they had The times they went from good to bad But the boys survived the stock retreat A retirement plan, it took the heat from ENRON Well it melted down in a shredded heap That made traders run and brokers weep The boys hid a pile and they took the fifth So that even the feds couldn't save the myth of ENRON All that's left is a pile of junk Some worthless stock and a lot of bunk Laws and men that we can't trust From the biggest bubble that ever went bust ENRON

I do know a lot of this type of parody is played on 'morning zoo' radio shows in the US, most not as good as your piece, but some pretty choice. Perhaps presented as comedy per se, like Jay Leno and the other court jesters of the world, the material is well protected from libel suits. Anybody on the 'cat ever produced such radio segments or know of companies that produced such parodies? |
