I remember Cathal McConnell singing it in one of our Linlithgow pub sessions, getting on for 20 years ago. He stood on his chair with a full pint in his hand (or it was full when he started singing!): “ actions” included raising his glass on “High Dunne” and lowering it on “Low Dunne”, so a fair amount of beer got spilt on the heads of those sitting nearest him!

George Henderson; you mentioned the BMM reunions. I couldn't see you on the contacts list but, if you are an ex-Bangor Morrisman, you might be interested to know it's the 50th anniversary (of their founding) reunion this year.

The Song was included in the album The Hedges of County Down and Other Traditional Songs by Tommy Sands in the 60's. I spoke to a company Canadian River Music who told me this album was no longer around.

Frank Jeal. Your comments are really interesting. I would love to know which line you inserted?

Are you still living in Ireland? If so why not pop out to the Bray Singers Circle. we operate in the Strand Hotel, Bray on the third Saturday of every month (next meeting June 19th). We start singing at 9.30pm.

I still go over to Bangor occasionaly (either for Not the Bangor Folk Festival in April or the reunion in October). Alas, I believe Bangor Morris is no more, but you may know more about that.

OK, Here's the story of "Mr Dunne" as I know it!    The song was originally collected as a pub song in Dorset by Richard Valentine , probably from the Dorchester area where he lived. Richard came up to Oxford in about 1959 . He was a fine folk singer and he and I occasionally sang duets at the Heritage club. Richard was loosely attached to the Oxford Uni. Morris Men , of which I was a member , and on a morris tour he wrote out the words of Mr Dunn on the back of an envelope. After the tour I went to learn the words , but found that the envelope had got damp and one line was illegible , so I rewrote that one line. That was significant, as to me that line is instantly recognisable , and acts like a "radioactive marker". I can immediately tell if the version in question has been 'through my hands'. I should say that all the versions I have seen in recent years including the ones on this thread, have my line in it ! When I went to Bangor in 1962 I took the song with me , and many of my friends in the Bangor morris may have learnt it. I then moved to Dublin where I also sang it around the pubs etc. One Irishman who had been in Bangor , and learnt the song there was Brian Mullen., from Derry. He admitted to me that he had passed it on to the Sands family, when I rang him , having heard their recording of it on Radio Eirinn.
So , the song was originally collected in England. I believe it was used in Dorset as a 'challenge' song, - if you could sing it you were still sober enough to be served !.
In recent years I was contacted by a genuine Mr Dunne who was writing a history of the (Irish) Dunne family, He had heard Cathal MacConnell sing it , and Cathal suggested he contact me for the words. So the words have now made it into a formal history of the Dunne family!!
What really matters though is that the song caught on, travelled widely and given lots of people a good laugh !!

The song was sung regularly at Bangor in the Ship Launch by offshoots of the Bangor Morrismen in the late 1096s/early 70s. It was probably brought there by Frank Jeale (from Dublin?), originally an Oxford man and founder of the Bangor Morrismen but resident in Dublin by the time I knew him. Brian Mullen, now with a radio programme on Radio Foyle and an ex-morrisman, learnt it from Frank, as did Dave Byrne. Thanks for the words; I've been singing it since the 1960s but had forgotten the third verse.

The 2nd verse screws up the rhyme scheme. I'd drop it.
Three verses is enough anyway. No use banging people on the head with it.

I thought I had posted this before. Anyway, I collected this song from one of the Bangor Morris Men in 1986 or therabouts when the festival was held in the Kings Arms. He had been singing it for many, many years.

Brian Mullins, from Derry, Collected it from the same source and I heard that he ha given it to Tommy sands which may, or may not be true.

According to my source it is an old english folk song. the name Dunne is common to boht Ireland and England. It is a very common name in Tipperary where I am currently living.

Fintan Vallely has written a very good parody relating to Ben Dunne whose indiscretions in Miami have caused the long running Tribunals here in IReland. Well worth checking out

The Dunne song is sung to the same tune as The Irish Jubilee. In the sleeve notes of the record of the same name it is stated that "according to Edith Fowke (it) was probably the inspiration for the Newfoundland song The Kelligrews Soiree. It is also known in the Ballyleagh area of Co.Down where it is called The Bundle of Lies."

I do this song occasionally to the tune of a Newfoundland song " The Kelligrew's Soiree." "You may talk of clara nolan's ball or any thing you choose, but it couldn't hold a snuff box to the spree at Kelligrew's etc." This is the tune I heard it sung on and is porbably not original but goes very well and makes for a real fun song. Try it just for fun. Re. Kelligrew"s Soiree. I have no idea where this song originated, but we always associate it with music from Newfoundland.

Sorry CeeJay. I asked no less than Tommy Sands himself. He stated that it was traditional. He got it via the oral tradition when he was a kid from older singers in the area he grew up in. He laughed when I told him some people were of the impression that he wrote it, and said it was far older than he is, yet!

By the way, a new book of Irish Wellerisms just came out, and one common one, on which the song was evidently a riff, is:

"well done," said old Dunne when young Dunne was born.

I noted a reference to Bangor Morris Men in this thread with the song and asked someone I know who was around in the days of the Ship Launch, was a Bangor Morris Man and still sings the song. He suggests the song arrived there by means of someone called Frank Geal/Jeal.

I know that doesn't answer who wrote it but it expands a little on the vague reference given by Frank McGrath and George Henderson.

The attribution on the centre sticker of The Sands Family 'After the Morning' EMI (Ireland) LP LEAF 7012 is '(Trad.)'. I don't know how accurate that is, but it rules out its being written by any of the Sands Family - attributions are given to various members of the family where appropriate.

Subject: Lyr Add: THE DUNNE SONG
From: McGrath
Date: 02 Apr 98 - 03:45 PM

THE DUNNE SONG

Cathal McConnell / Bangeor Morris men
? Sands (author)

I once was well acquainted with a man called Mr. Dunne,
A very jolly man indeed and full of harmless fun.
He courted young and married was when he was twenty one,
And soon a big fine family had Mr. And Mrs. Dunne.

Chorus:
For there was high Dunne and low Dunne, overdone and underdone,
All the other younger Dunne's it's in and out they run,
There was old Dunne and young Dunne and young Dunne's younger son,
And young Dunne will be a Dunne when the old Dunne's done.

In course of time the eldest Dunne he took himself a wife,
But then he found out that he had the hardest fight for life,
For to try and keep three bellies full and a wife who weighed twelve stone,
Any man that could do that you'd have to say well done.

For there was high Dunne and low Dunne, overdone and underdone,
All the other younger Dunne's it's in and out they run,
There was old Dunne and young Dunne and young Dunne's younger son,
And young Dunne will be a Dunne when the old Dunne's done.

Well when Mrs. Dunne presented Dunne with their first bouncing son,
He named it Herbert Duncan Dunne but called it cherry bun,
And when as thick as hops they come and many more do run,
Says Mrs. Dunne to Mr. Dunne, "More bread or we'll be done."

For there was high Dunne and low Dunne, overdone and underdone,
All the other younger Dunne's it's in and out they run,
There was old Dunne and young Dunne and young Dunne's younger son,
And young Dunne will be a Dunne when the old Dunne's done.

So here's good luck to the eldest Dunne likewise the youngest Dunne,
Let's hope the youngest Dunne can do as the eldest Dunne has done.
For any chance to be a Dunne and not a vacant one,
What's done says Dunne should be well done so well done good old Dunne.

For there was high Dunne and low Dunne, overdone and underdone,
All the other younger Dunne's it's in and out they run,
There was old Dunne and young Dunne and young Dunne's younger son,
And young Dunne will be a Dunne when the old Dunne's done.
