Subject: Phil Ochs From: reggie miles Date: 21 Mar 02 - 04:35 AM I've checked many sites but so far found only one that contained a single sound file to to Phil's draft dodger song. I thought I had an album of his stuff around here but can't find it. Can anyone suggest a site that has sound files to listen to the melodies of Phil's songs? I've got to come up with a couple of his songs to play. Have any suggestions? What are your favorites? I've looked in the MC search and found numerous references to Phil but did not find any where someone had posted a link to a site containing sound files. |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Phil Ochs From: Mark Cohen Date: 21 Mar 02 - 05:06 AM I don't know about sound files, but I have Phil's 1968 songbook ("The War Is Over", published by Barricade Music and with a $3.95 cover price!), and could snail mail or fax you some Xeroxes... Unfortunately it does not include "Draft Dodger Rag", but I can make a MIDI file of that melody...if you're not in a big hurry! Aloha, Mark |

Subject: RE: Tune Req: Phil Ochs From: GUEST,lanfranc at the orifice Date: 21 Mar 02 - 06:51 AM "Draft Dodger Rag" has long been one of my favourites, though I haven't sung it for a while until recently. I modified the last verse last tim I sang it. Instead of: "I hate Chou en Lai, and I hope he dies" I sang: "I hate Bin Laden, he's bad as Satan" Which updates it a bit - I'm sure Phil wouldn't mind. I wish he were still with us, what would he have to say about the current situation? The thing about Phil that differentiates a lot of his material is his background as a journalist, I feel that it gave him an edge that no-one before or since has had. My favourites? "A small circle of friends", "Pleasures of the Harbour", "Changes", "When I'm Gone", "There, but for fortune", "The Highwayman" - and so many more. Thus primed, I might do a couple on PalTalk tonight! Alan |
