Just a little question to you native english speakers: How do you pronounce "Piraeus", the greek harbour?
Thank you!

Pie-ree-us. Accent on second syllable.

My previous answer might be a little old-fashioned. That is the standard pronunciation of my (rocknroll) generation. I think the younger set are more inclining towards pi(as in pit)-ray-us

In certain English accents it comes out as "pariahs".

I'm pleased to find myself included among the younger set. In certain English accents, by the way, it comes out as "pariahs".

How does who pronounce it? In Greek, it's pee-re-AHS, with the accent on the last syllable and the middle syllable a short, flat "e" like in 'met'.

pie RAY us, in English. Le Pirée, in French (pee-ray if you want to spell the sounds in English).

Pih-RAY-us always seemed to communicate adequately when I was there.

Preferred (Webster's Collegiate) is Pi-rai-éfs with accent on the last syllable. It is more correctly spelled Piraiévs.

Webster may prefer it, but I reckon the Greeks who live there should know! I'll vote with the unnamed GUEST

The National Geographic Atlas uses Piraévs, and Piraeus is not in the index or on the map. The older spelling has been abandoned in modern practice. HOWEVER- those with Internet Explorer will be able to read this, but it won't work in Netscape or in some local servers- and it makes guest look good!
ΡΈΙΡΆΙΆ
Hmmm! I will be surprised if this really works!
