Subject: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Mar 02 - 10:18 AM I was looking for some fun stuff for the kids when I ran across this site and just had to bring it to this bunch of assorted sweet-tooth types we have around here. There are pictures of 24 Candy Bars in cross section (2 pages) and you can find out what each is by clicking on the picture. I got 17 out of 24 and that tells me that I know way, way, way, too much about candy bars! If you score higher, you are in serious trouble folks.....and I think some of you are!!! Sorry, but these are American candy bars so some of you can just look and dream about the creamy caramel and sticky nougat. Give it a try: Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Mar 02 - 10:36 AM Nope.....and that one tricked me!!! Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: katlaughing Date: 21 Mar 02 - 10:38 AM Phew! I only got four, but where's the Snickers? And, since when did a Three Musketeers look so chocolatey on the inside, I remember digging out the inside and it was more whitish than that picture. And, no Reese's Peanut Butter Cup? Sheesh! No Hershey's with almonds? LOL kat |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: MMario Date: 21 Mar 02 - 10:40 AM I only got 8 - in fact I didn't even RECOGNIZE some of the candies... |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Mar 02 - 10:43 AM Snickers is on Page Two kat. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Amos Date: 21 Mar 02 - 11:21 AM Ya know this is almost enough to put me off eating candy bars!! They look really gross. ('Course, the tongue don't care!) A |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Noreen Date: 21 Mar 02 - 12:41 PM I got 4 right, out of 5 that are available in this country. That doesn't include the Mars Bar and Milky Way, which are apparently different from in the UK: Mars Bar with nuts in??? You seem to have peanuts in everything. And Oh Henry! ??????! :0) |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: CapriUni Date: 21 Mar 02 - 01:10 PM I know, Kat... the pictures were all so dark, I could barely even see some of them. Of course, I think the majority of American candy bars are all way too sweet -- all that fluffy nougat is just whipped sugar. Personally, I prefer dark chocalate to milk chocolate, and that's really hard to find in the candy aisle... |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: kendall Date: 21 Mar 02 - 01:51 PM Noreen, I'm not sure what your question is, but, they called it O Henry because William Sidney Porter wouldn't fit on the wrapper. |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: catspaw49 Date: 21 Mar 02 - 01:54 PM Yeah Kendall, that and the fact that no one wanted a candy bar called "Oh, It Looks Like A Turd"............ Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Mrrzy Date: 21 Mar 02 - 02:01 PM No, its the Baby Ruth that does that. You can empty a pool with one of those in the water! I only got 2 right on p. 1 and a couple on p. 2, even though there were lots that I actually eat. I guess I just stuff them in without looking at the middle! |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: bflat Date: 21 Mar 02 - 02:28 PM I got 13 right which isn't in Spaw's league but I owned a candy store for 10 years so I should have known them all. I rarely ate them and looking at the pics I'm glad about that. Give me Lindt chocolate from Switzerland and I'll go away and be quiet. Ellen |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Liz the Squeak Date: 21 Mar 02 - 04:14 PM I got a scary 9 right out of the 10 that Brits would actually be able to get...... and 2 that were pure guesses as I only know the names of 2 US bars...... It is actually harder than it looks, we had a quiz last year where one of the rounds was actually eating candy bars and deciding what each one was without the wrapper... a lot of those wafer bars are exactly the same without the wrappers on..... Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Lyrical Lady Date: 21 Mar 02 - 04:36 PM Now Spaw ... are any of these on the "Rot Gut Diet"...I don't think so!!! Especially the ones with nuts! Guess we just get to look! LL (who got more right than I care to admit!) |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Mrs.Duck Date: 21 Mar 02 - 04:51 PM Like Liz I got far too many right for someone that's only ever visited the US once! Like the look of the King size nut roll!!! |

Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: SharonA Date: 21 Mar 02 - 05:46 PM I took the quiz and failed miserably. I'm a candy-bar junkie but I'm faithful to my favorites and don't "play the field" very much. WHERE was the 5th Avenue bar, I ask you?!? Besides, I was thrown off by the color values of the photos. NO Three Musketeers bar filling is that dark!!!!! |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 21 Mar 02 - 06:09 PM What is the green foamy on p. 2? I didn't have the stomach to look it up. The candy makers are fouling their vats here, with two kinds of Reese Cups, three kinds of Mars, etc. Theoretically, Canadians have different tastes from the US-ers, so content, color (oops, sorry, should be colour) and taste are different for some of the bars. |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: alison Date: 21 Mar 02 - 07:46 PM the green foamy was a mint aero....... yummmmmmmmmmm I got 6... but I hadn't heard of a lot of the others.... the mars with the nuts threw me... as did the milky way with caramel... it looked like our typical Mars bar..... slainte alison |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Sarah the flute Date: 22 Mar 02 - 03:43 AM We have been running a UK version in my Library for the kiddos for Easter. It's a great sociological insight to realise that our highly intelligent 6th formers will stand in front of a board of clues for 2 hours in order to win ONE cadbury's mini egg!!! The quiz is being hailed a great success and we are getting all sorts of visitors to the Library! In fact a VERY famous rock parent was looking round the school and I was very tempted to get him to answer the clue "Mother's local" but I didn't dare in the end! Sarah |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Grab Date: 22 Mar 02 - 07:27 AM Nope Spaw, we can just look and thank god we're in a country that knows how to make chocolate properly. Many of them look the same as their equivalents over here (Aero, Kit-kat, Snickers etc), they just taste shite in the US. Blame Hershey! Graham. |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Susan-Marie Date: 22 Mar 02 - 10:34 AM I have been trying for years to identify a candy bar I remember from my childhood on Cape Cod (U.S.A.). It was a bar of whipped milk chocolate (had little air bubbles in it) and had flecks of something harder - maybe solid chocolate or maybe hard caramel, I don't know. I'll send a candy bar of your choice to anyone who can name it! |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: SINSULL Date: 22 Mar 02 - 10:38 AM I got five including Three Musketeers. Three I knew because I disliked them even as a kid. Peanuts! Yecchh! And that green thing - that was nasty. Does anyone remember the candy bar made of honey foam and covered in dark chocolate? I haven't seen it in years. |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: MMario Date: 22 Mar 02 - 10:46 AM Susan-Marie - I seem to remember something like that - I think the hard flecks were pieces of toffee; (I can practically taste the thing) but haven't the foggiest remembrence of what it was called. When I was very young - candy bars were a big treat - but then again we could still get penny candy - many types were multiple pieces for a penny; candy bars cost a nickle or a dime and had to be saved for. |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Susan-Marie Date: 22 Mar 02 - 11:32 AM MMario, I hope someone can name it, I'd love to taste it again. We got candy bars every Sunday after church - probably the only way mom could get us to go! |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Mary in Kentucky Date: 22 Mar 02 - 01:12 PM Susan-Marie, just a guess here...could it be a Heath Bar? (the toffee suggestion made me think of that one) And I didn't see an O Henry bar. It's a bit like a Baby Ruth. I didn't keep count of how many I got right. Even though I recognized most of them AFTER I saw the answer, I didn't do very well on the test. |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Dicho (Frank Staplin) Date: 22 Mar 02 - 02:49 PM The scorn heaped on Hershey's chocolate always amuses me. The type and percentage of chocolate is varied to suit the taste of the customer. English candy bars taste just as peculiar to most Americans as ours do to them. Cadbury's always taste mealy. Hersheys, like most chocolate companies, produces several kinds of bulk chocolate for use by other confectioners. Some prefer Belgian, Swiss, etc., but all the large companies use bulk chocolate of several types, according to the product desired. For the best sipping chocolate, try Ybarra's, from Mexico. The best in the world! |

Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: JeZeBeL Date: 22 Mar 02 - 06:44 PM Well I got 10 right, but as some people have pointed out a lot of them aren't available. Very disappointed to see no hershey's cookies and cream!! My favourite choc, along with Lindtt like bflat. Ur choccies that are the same as ours are very much different to ours!! |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: SINSULL Date: 22 Mar 02 - 09:39 PM Damn you all! I don't like candy but after perusing this thread I bought and ate a dark chocolate Milky Way Lite Bar. Now I am dreaming about champagne truffles - dark chocolate, rolled in cocoa. $45/lb. at Bloomingdale's if and when they have them. Not the chocolate coated abominations! The melt in your mouth heavenly treasures...Damn you, Spaw! Just when I almost had my menopausal acne under control. |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: catspaw49 Date: 22 Mar 02 - 09:54 PM Glad it worked for you 'Fox!! Every once in a while I go looking for fun stuff for the kids and invariably I'll find 4 dumb things to every winner.......and the kids always perfer the 4 dumb ones. I must admit that I am now more embarassed in guessing right on so many, but I used to be a real junkie as a kid and a lot of them were old bars. Where was the ZERO though......a frozen ZERO was a great thing in the summer.....And the SKYBAR with 5 different fillings......And where the hell was the CHUNKY?????? CHUNKY has really gone downhill, much smaller and fewer raisins and nuts..........**sigh**............. As we left a restaurant the other day I grabbed a couple of Andes Mints and I told Karen then that just once I'd like to have roomful of them, unwrapped, and a cup of coffee and just eat them til I explode. Spaw |
Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: Peg Date: 22 Mar 02 - 11:23 PM Now that was fun! I got quite a few of them right...and the ones I missed? You guessed it; the ones I did not EAT as a kid! Anyone remember the Zero? Nougat and caramel covered in white chocolate (I think you can still get them)? Also one of my faves as kid was called "10:30": Cookie and crispies inside, cinnamon-tinged white fudge on the outside...yum. I had never heard of some of them either! Very culturally specific thing, sweeites. ;)

Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: catspaw49 Date: 23 Mar 02 - 12:16 PM Not always needed Guest, but if you must have something........... TALKIN' CANDY BAR BLUES (Noel Paul Stookey) Bought a candy bar the other day, only ate half, s'gonna throw the rest away when I saw this kid playin'in the street, I said "hey kid, you want somethin' to eat?" he said "whut?" I said "Candy, son." He said "HELP!" Then he started to run, and I stood there, watchin him go, half a bar of chocolate runnin down my fingers. Well the kid comes back in a minute or two but his mom's with him and the neighbors too, and they got the kid scared it's plain to see, they say "which one done it?" he points at me. He says "Him". I say "what do you mean?" He says "YOU!" then he starts to scream, and I'm standin, everybody's lookin, everybody's starin' -at me- ... (nervous laugh) "Howdy duty...y'all waitin' for the bus? Ah ... a little late idn't it ... anybody got a watch? ... we could uh see how late it is ... I got a better idea, let's find somebody with a watch and stare at him!" Well some start pickin up baseball bats and the others are pullin the pins from their hats - "I think this thing's gone a little too far, hell, I only offered him a CANDY BAR!" I said "WAIT!" I said "What are you doin'?" They said "PRE-VERT the kid's life is ruined!" "Oh...oh well then you better check what he's chewin' cause I got the feelin' he's in the middle of a bubble gum orgy!" Well they're comin' at me and I'm backin' away and then I hear this policeman say "are you positive he's the right man?" (I quick flicked the candy bar out of my hand). He says "Show me." I says "show ya what?" He says "The CANDY BAR you degen-a-rut" and he grabs me. He grabs both my hands. Pretty easy to see ... which hand's got the chocolate! Well I've had some troubled times before, but none like the trip from the candy store ... sympathize with the kid allright, somebody's nice to ya, probably ain't right. I'll grow up, I'll learn the way. I'll learn so that my later days'll be prosperous. (Chocolate covered) ... if I don't bite off more than I can hide. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: CandyBar-A-Holics-Test Your Knowledge From: technission Date: 24 Mar 02 - 03:25 AM Useta be, whenever I made a trip to Nashville (non-music business) I would bring my sweetie home a box of Goo-Goo Clusters. It was mostly for the funny name, but I do recall them being sticky and yummy. Now, go to your grocery store and locate a bottle of "marshmallow creme" and on its label there will probably be a recipe for making fudge. OK, it's not a BAR but you could pour it into molds when you make it, or cut the cooled product into bars! It can be done in the microwave and it's quite good. I would like to add a nice green layer of mint flavor swirled into said fudge, but I'm not a confectioner by trade - who can tell me what I can use, perhaps white to start with, that I could mix creme de menthe into while it's in a molten state and that would not just be absorbed into the greater tao of the fudge but would remain a separate green-colored strata? Anybody? TIA! michael |
