At the risk of destroying my trad reputation as a folk curmudgeon, I want to talk about the singing cowboy, Jimmy Wakely. He had an uptown voice something like Bing Crosby, but I find his renditions of the Hollywood pseudo Western songs some of the mellowest stuff in my collection. I've no idea if he's still around, but I just wanted to say that the LP I'm listening to right now---an old Decca record called JIMMY WAKELY---SANTA FE TRAIL is what I put on sometimes just to mellow out.

Sorry to report that Jimmy is not still around. Some years back when I was buying lps for resale our shop carried some of the recordings from Wakeley's company and I had the pleasure of visiting with Mr. Wakeley via telephone. When he died we continued to do business with Mrs. Wakeley. He was a fine singer and his duets with Margaret Whiting tho' considered 'pop' music at the time would probably be classified 'country' today.

I thought he, like so many of the cowboy actors, was not a very good actor, but a super vocalist. Thinking back on it, it's a wonder he wasn't better known than he was. I think his most popular records were those Arkie refers to with Margaret Whiting.

I have one of his CD's but I haven't seen a lot of his records available.
