A recent thread was looking for songs based on the days of the week, Too easy for Mudcat, folks, too easy.

Now the challenge I'm setting is to get as close as we can to a tune a date!

So starting with May, off the top of my head I come up with:

Good people all, both great and small
It is the first of May

...but a cannonball on the fifth of May
took my two fine legs from the knees away

On the fourteenth of May at the dawn of the day

The Playford tune "The Twenty-ninth of May"

Sticking to May, for the moment, what other dates can we fill in?

One rule: no songs or tunes written specially for this occasion!

DMcG

Ireally hate to do this, but you didn't say they had to be traditional.

First of May by the Bee Gees.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh!

Allan

Can it be as vague as "One Morning in May"?

Sorry, SharonA - I'm after specific dates. I had in mind ending up with a sort of diary so we all knew what the song of the day was!

There are at least three more I've found for May but I won't post them yet - I don't want anyone to think this is a hopeless task!

Haven't we done this before? I can't find it, but I recall posting Eighth of January.

And -- "It was the 5th of June, another ... dusty Delta day."

If you check DigiTrad (search for [of May]) you'll find a bunch, ranging up to the 45th (in Cowboy Fireman). For some reason, the 14th seems to be extremely popular.

Thanks to Dick we now have, by my reckoning the 1,2,3,4,5,6,11,14,18,23,24,28 and 29th covered.

I also had 17th May as a Morris tune. But there's still a few gaps left.

The complication here, as found by compilers of "Book of Days" books over the centuries, is fitting in the churches' movable feasts. In May, for example, Whitsunday or Ascension Day, both of which appear in songs, meander in a strange way round the calendar. Where do you stick them in your list? Easter does the same, though thank God Christmas stays put.
