In the 1960's Phil Ochs modified the Alfred Noyes poem "The Highwayman" and set it to music. It begins...

The wind was a torrent of darkness

On the gusty trees

The moon was a ghostly galleon

Tossed upon cloudy seas

Is this the song you're looking for?

Kevin

I know the song. There is a tape called The Highwayman that has it.

I had it once and will try and find it so I can give you the words.

I am a highwayman along the coach roads I did ride sword and pistol by may side many a maiden lost her marbles to my trade many a soldier shed his life blood on my blade etc..

I am a highwayman along the coach roads I did ride sword and pistol by my side the bastards hung me in the spring of twenty five but I am still alive

I am a sailor I was born upon the tide I sailed a schooner round the horn to Mexico I went aloft to furl the main sail in a blow and when the yard arm broke off they said that I got killed but I am living still

I am a dam builder across the river deep and wide were steel and water did collide a place called bolder ?mile high Colorado? I slipped and fell into the wet concrete below they buried me in that great tomb that knows no sound but I am still around and around and around and around

I'll fly a star ship across the universe divide and when I reach the other side I'll find a place to rest my weary spirit if I can perhaps I will become a highwayman again or I may simply be a single drop of rain but I will remain I'll be back again and again and again

I copied this off alt.music.lyrics last week. I think it's pretty close. -Joe-
