For those with clear memories, but no idea WHEN something was popular, there's a wonderful (depending on your tastes) book called Pop Memories 1890-1954 by Joel Washburn. It lists every artist who had a record hit the top 40 furing that time period, lising every song that hit the charts including the year, the date it hit the charts, how many weeks it was on the chrat, and how high it reached. There's also a brief description of the artist and a discography of their charting records. A great bathroom book... Anyone ever heard Sal Hopii and His Novelty Quartet singing Little Grass Shack? It hit number 1 on the charts on Januray 20, 1934. I don't remember it either..

Just a few to add to Amos's list:

"At the Hop" by Danny and Juniors
"Sea Cruise" by ??? (same problem as Amos's)
"Peggy Sue" by Buddy Holly
"Thousand Stars" by Kathy Young (nice old slow dance song)
"Chantilly Lace" by the Big Bopper
"Donna" by Richie Valens (another slow dance tune)
"16 Tons" by Tennessee Earnie Ford
"Jail House Rock" by Elvis
"Charlie Brown" by the Coasters

Nice thing about all of these is that they can all be played with 3 or 4 basic chords. Hey, what am I saying. It's the 50's, Bobert... Good luck

My favorite pop lyrics site is Lyrics World. They have songs listed by title, artist, and by year - and also a list of #1 hits for each year from 1930-1999.
There are days when I'm not in the mood for folk music, and you're likely to hear me singing Broadway or girl group songs. My falsetto is most impressive....

Bobert, Sea Cruise ,by Frankie Ford was definitely from the 50s. However, there was a version by Little Shelton which used the same backing track plus a few extras, now that was from the 60s, I believe. Mariner

What do you mean by well known songs of the 50's? There were lots of different genres, both in the US and UK--and, at least in the US, they didn't mix well---God help you if you played Kendall's list (as much as I approve of it) for a crowd expecting Rockabilly music-- of course, the 50's were a great decade for electric blues (Chicago and otherwise), but a crowd expecting 50's blues would get a bit rangey when you played "April in Portugal"--Merle Haggard pointed out that "Hank and Lefty crowded every jukebox, that's the way it was in '51", but not the jukeboxes with Les and Larry Elgar, or Stan Kenton--Best to figure out where you want to hang your hat before you start- learning songs--personally, I always enjoyed Mr. Aker Bilk--

Yeah, MTed,
There was a sea-change in popular music about 1954/1955, when R&B got more popular and rock and roll was 'born' with folks like Chuck Berry, Bill Haley and The Comets, Elvis, Jerry Lee Lewis, etc. Then at the end of the decade the popular folk revival started with The Kingston Trio, etc. Country music was kind of a different matter, but there was a lot of crossover, with Hank Williams's songs being recorded by Tony Bennett, Jo Stafford, etc. The Everly Brothers, Eddy Arnold, Patsy Cline, Elvis and others helped bridge that gap, too.

A few other big 50's hits I can think of are:
Till Rock and Roll Waltz (the #1 record for 1953 or 1954)
Kisses Sweeter Than Wine
Wheel Of Fortune
Purple People Eater
Kiss Of Fire
The Witch Doctor
Old Shep
Tutti Frutti
Teenager In Love

Sam - is this for the Queen's Golden Jubilee as most street parties will be this year? If so, you will need songs from around 1952 to be strictly correct. That means that all the rock 'n roll songs are too late. And presumably the crowd will want to sing, so the Country and Hillbilly songs are not options.

Gene's post is very useful if you stay with "Unforgettable Fifties - disc 2" and "Wonderful Fifties - discs 2 and 3". Many of these were very popular at the time and you will find that some of the old buggers know the words!!

Cheers, Terry

And for the lyrically challenged, there is always "Duke Of Earl". And to think, no one has mentioned Fabian or Frankie Avalon...how soon they forget.

Speaking of lyrically challenged, when did "Louie Louie" come out?

Louie Louie by the Kingsmen came out in the early 60s. I was in college at the time so the memory of many late night bll sessions trying to figure out just what the lyrics were is still present. I guess we thought the lyrics were "filthy", as the phrase goes. Uh oh. I may have started something here. A thread discussing the actual lyrics of Louie Louie might go on forever.

Actually, the song may be older than the 60s. I seem to remember the Kingsmen really made a cover of another artist. Maybe some 'Catter can shed more light here.
