At grammar school in Sunderland the English version was taught to us by our music teacher- this was in about 1956. I liked the tune at the time & still play the one we learned- Mrs MacLeod.

(I can't answer the question about the age of the song. I think it appeared in printed collections in the 19th century but could possibly be a lot older. It's the sort of song that people might have frequently changed the lyrics of in the past.)

In Shonagh's lyrics, the name of the lake should be Loch a Foran NOT "Foram", from the Gaelic Loch a' Feorain

This recording by Dileab Phriseal the song starts with the verse about singing: A Mhàiri bhanarach, gus an gabh mi 'n t-òran,
and is followed by another mouth music tune, Bodaichean a Mhírein

and here is a choral arrangement:

The Gaelic for that section is actually, Mhàiri Bhàn Mo Chridhe. This literally is Fair Mary of My Heart.

There are a lot of songs about one Fair Mary or another. Will look to see what I can find.

there are tunes called "Mac a' Phi" (or Domhnull Mac a' Phi" and "Crodh Chailein" I don't think they are the same as MacLeod's reel. As George said, some more detail might help us find these lyrics. And it would be nice to have the English words as many of us do know the air.
