How many of you Mudcatters have ever played a Strat?

1980 sunburst US model. Sold it last year. Never appreciated the tone and, subsequently, never really played it too much.

I miss my 1970 candy apple red telecaster...

Ed

Hang around Ed, I have a feeling that the Telecaster thread will be next.

And yes.

Yup. Have owned a couple of nice ones too. It was kinda cool when a kid showed up at his guitar lesson and proudly showed me his Strat and it had once been mine.

What's good enough for Dylan...boy, there's a can of worms!

Peace, Mooh.

Despite inherent design flaws--which generate a lot of issues for aesthetically-and-functionally-minded players---the Strat is the only guitar with an immediately recognizable sound (unless it is played through one of those modeling amps...then why would one care what guitar s/he was playing?)

In my opinion a Telecaster is at least as recognizable as the strat.

There are times when the sound recognition is instant, and times when you have to think a bit. The Telecaster's back pick-up is very recognisable, especially if you listen to eg. Roy Buchanan. The Strat body contributes more to the sound - a Fat Strat still sounds like a Strat. A Les Paul sounds like a Les Paul, but so do a lot of subsequent Gibsons that build on that technology - the L5S is indistinguishable (but sustains better), and there are an awful lot of other guitars that have learned to sound similar, like the Yamaha SG series.

Thank God it was a "musical" thread from ol'53 for ONCE!

Speaking of "all kinds"

Why did YOU post the question?

I.E. How is the strat connected to YOUR life?

Is there a special significance for YOU?

Have YOU ever played a strat?

Do YOU have some "inside knowledge" about the strat?

The heighth of rudness.

To open a conversation - and then let it die? Do you think you are playing straight-man to Milt, Dudley, Red, or Peter? Or maybe, Spaw?

Uh, thanks, but I'll say this instead............

Bob, yes it was an opp for me and you provided the straight man part, but so do dozens of other 'Catters at different times. There was no anger or thought of demeaning you. I have gotten used to your thread starts and when you started down this path, the next obvious one was Telecaster followed by Rickenbacker which covers the 4 main rock electrics although there are hundreds.

When or if I want to cut you down or something, I'll say so up front, tell you what I think in no uncertain terms, and sign my name to it. If you take offense at rather obvious jokes from me, then you're not paying attention....it's what I do. Relax.

Spaw

Yup. Got an '82 Japanese sunburst. I've tried the Americans, and I take yer word for it that they're a slightly better guitar; ( maybe way better??), but I honestly can't tell the diff. The Mexican Strats I've played were crappy in my estimation, but maybe there's some gooduns out there. Thing is I like to play the blues, and I couldn't imagine not having the Strat around. However, I found the real question isn't just the guitar, but of course the amp. Ya gotta play it through the right gear. Mine's a DeVille 212. Kind of "classic" sound; not too rocky. That's what effects pedals're for.

And by the way, is it me or are folks just a wee bit paranoid around here? Jeez! Nice thread. SB

I looked at a StratAcoustic a while ago. It looked great, just suited me. Then I tried it out. Very disappointing, no volume no bass, no resonance. Ah! but it looked good.

I've got a Fernandes strat from the copyist days of the late 70s and early 80s (these are often called "lawsuit" guitars) when Japan made copies as good as the originals. Mine is pretty good.

Like all strats it has it's strengths and weaknesses. Leo Fender was a great designer and in most such cases there are idiosynchracies to the design. the single coil pickups are famous for their trebly sound. The middle pickup is located in a place where it is 'mechanically out of phase' with the others due to string vibration patterns. Leo made some odd choices and came up with an enduring design.

Since he also came up with the Tele, largely invented the electric bass and designed both the Precision Bass and the Jazz Bass, and designed the Jazzmaster and several other electrics still in use, And the amplifiers that are still the standard against which others are measured, his place in lutherie heaven is assured. Every one of his designs has quirks.

...that bolt-on neck is an albatross tho ... you go up the neck to about the 14th or 16th fret and run into a 2 by 4 block of wood, fer Chris's sake.

Still, if it weren't for that bolt-on, it wouldn't have that distinguishing sound. The best thing about a Strat is its looks.

My strat is a great guitar, and I also have a Squier Bullet Strat which I picked up brand new for 95.00 and I use that one for teaching. Bob

Yes I have. Not my favorite. Don't like the volume control location. Turns up or down with my strums. Rather a Tele or a Les Paul Junior Melody Maker anytime.

Good threads 53, Yes, I've played all the 'big 4' electrics. That wasn't your question, but I want to qualify my answer. If I had only one electric guitar to choose from it would be a strat with a H/B in the bridge pos. with a 'stacked H/B' in the neck pos. with a single-coil in the middle. Both H/Bs would be switchable(i.e., should be able to cut one of the coils for single coil sound) and a 'Floyd Rose' tremelo. I know, I know alot of guys don't like the 'Rose', but I find it easier to maintain pitch. IMH the strat is the most versatile of the mainstays. Though a case can be made for the LP, it's weight over a period of time takes it's toll.

I also played a Strat and they are so much nicer to play and to hold. I have 2 strats and I use one for teaching. They just seem to fit you better that the Les Paul and they are a whole light lighter. But I reckon that their are some pretty loyal Les Paul fans out there.

Just bought a candy apple red one with rosewood fingerboard and Tech 21 amp (which can simulate Messa Boogie, Fender Tweeds and Marshalls.) Last night, put on the "Mr. Lucky" album (John Lee Hooker) and honked along with it on the Strat. Had a blast and am digging it! (And am teaching my son to play it as well.)
