Subject: TAB: My Ramblin' Boy (Tom Paxton) From: Jason Xion Wang Date: 12 Jun 14 - 01:54 AM Try my learning journal here... "Ramblin' Boy" and a few more. I began collecting folk song tabs earlier this year. My tab of "Ramblin' Boy" comes from a 1963 live recording. Tom have been strumming this song since the 70's, but this standard Travis picking thing is what he did at the beginning. Hope this helps. Jason |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ramblin' Boy (Tom Paxton) From: Joe Offer Date: 25 May 16 - 07:43 PM RAMBLIN' BOY (from DT) He was a pal and a friend always We rambled round in the hard ol' days He never cared if I had no dough We rambled round in the rain and snow So here's to you my ramblin' boy May all your rambles bring you joy So here's to you my ramblin' boy May all your rambles bring you joy In Tulsa town we chanced to stray We thought we'd try to work one day The boss says he had room for one Says my old pal, "We'd rather bum" Late one night in a jungle camp The weather was cold and it was damp He got the chills, and he got them bad They took the only friend I ever had He left me here to ramble on My ramblin' pal is dead and gone If when we die we go somewhere I'll bet you a dollar he's ramblin' there ------------------------------------------------------------------- Words and music by Tom Paxton, copyright 1963 Cherry Lane Music. Subject: DT Corr: Ramblin' Boy (Tom Paxton) From: Joe Offer Date: 25 May 16 - 07:55 PM Here's my transcription from the 1964 Tom Paxton recording. Parts that are different from the Digital Tradition, are in italics. The DT lyrics may be a correct transcription of another Paxton recording, but they don't match the 1964 recording that I gather is original. If anyone finds a Paxton recording that matches the DT lyrics, let me know. RAMBLIN' BOY (corrected) He was a man and a friend always He stuck with me in the hard old days He never cared if I had no dough We rambled round in the rain and snow CHORUS And here's to you my ramblin' boy May all your ramblin' bring you joy Here's to you my ramblin' boy May all your ramblin' bring you joy In Tulsa town we chanced to stray We thought we'd try to work one day The boss said he had room for one Says my old pal, "We'd rather bum" Late one night in a jungle camp The weather it was cold damp He got the chills, and he got 'em bad They took the only friend I had He left me here to ramble on My ramblin' pal is dead and gone If when we die we go somewhere I'll bet you a dollar he's ramblin' there ------------------------------------------------------------------- Words and music by Tom Paxton, copyright 1963 Cherry Lane Music. Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Ramblin' Boy (Tom Paxton) From: leeneia Date: 27 May 16 - 04:22 PM Thanks for the link to Tom Paxton singing, Joe. That is the first performance of this song that has not made me clench my teeth. How does he do that subtle vocal flip that gets him off the high note on "you"? I've heard it in mountain music, and I don't know what to call it. You have to listen closely to hear it. |
