Every week I have been hearing more and more, so here is an overview, and I hope I remember everyone, if not, I will hope to catch up... I can emagine what a Mudcat CD will be like as a result...
I have not heard a lemon yet!!! What a tallented bunch!
Today I heard a CD from BILL SABLES: Really excellent. Good playing and good singing, and great choice of material, how can you go wrong when you have songs like Whitby Fisherman (written by Bill...) and of course one of my favs, Dancing at Whitsun...
DON MEIXNER... also arrived today. Very nice work! Don wrote a song, Photographs, I hope we see more of his writing,... Don, it reminds me of the time Genie and I had to go to Dublin to get my camera repaired. The first leg of the journy was accross Dingle bay with our Tandem bike strapped to the rail of the yatch Mudcat's Popular Halfwit was crewing (back in 78)... then from Caersaveen (sorry for the spelling) over the mountains to Tralee by bike, biking to Kilorglin, and stopping way up in the mountains in someone's front room for tea and scones, and there on the wall - a needlepoint of an Armalite, with the dates 1916 to 1978 or so... WRITE MORE DON!
Sheamus Kennidy: A really nice Irish music hall band, and good materials, Genie and I put on your Christmas Album as a new Christmas tradition now,
ROLLO... John the Ferryman... A German band doing Engish and Irish and American songs of the sea with real precision and gusto, and great harmonies. As I said in my review of them, the slight German accents, gives it a real Foc'sle feel! Prost lads (and lassies) Rollo and his brothers and sisters do the job VERY well...
What can you say about Kev McGath... his gentle words here are mirrored in his gentle and humorous music. When things get too New York around here, I put Kev on the CD player and things get into perspective. Wonderfull wonderfull CD... on which you can hear AINE... (with a Fada on the A...) who writes and sings with equal and great tallent.
PEG... a wonderful strong Celtic singer, who I hope we hear alot more from...
CHRIS AMOS, epitomises the west county singer! Reminds me of Peter Belamy!

I recently received a CD by a group of talented musicians which call themselves Sorch Dorcah. Excellent tunes. I'm listening to the CD right now, and playing Hran to various tunes for practice.

Recordings, or live? I can't begin to list the wonderful music I've heard from Mudcatters as a result of the FSGW welcoming us to the Getaway.

Well, OK, I could begin....

I'll start with Mick, whose "Beef Brother" persona and Big Mick Bravado melt when he plys a love song - or any song, for that matter! He pours his heart and soul into every song and every argument ;) And just because he makes fun of the bodhran doesn't mean he can't play next to one. When he and Barry Finn play together, you could close your eyes and feel the cold mists of Ireland as the troops gather over the hills.......

OK, that brings us to Barry, who could give you goosebumps if he sang the Barney song, with that deep, booming, ripping voice. But he doesn't. He honors the traditions of sea songs, work songs, prison songs, and just good true honest ballad. His own songs are the best, though.

Hmm.... how about Kendall? Didn't get to hear enough of him in person, but I will soon!! His playing is lovely, his songs are just beautiful. His stories are the best of him, though. Maine humor, simply told and just hilarious. He is a charmer beyond compare. His story about "Orrin Seavey's Accident" has caused more than one accidents since. The best of him I've heard, though, his "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda." Get it on "Beginner's Luck". I dare you not to cry.

The nicest thing I've heard, since hearing Mudcats do their music, is my own friend and neighbor Janie. We had never done too much together when I dragged her to the Getaway with me last Autumn ("I can't explain! You just have to come!"). Since then, we've learned much more about each other and made a lot more music (but never enough) together!

My family is hungry. I'll come back! Thanks for a great thread, Larry.

Been listening to a lot of 'Catters during recovery:

Jen Marum's Fall River, Seamus Kennedy in all his recorded incarnations, Guy Wolff, Paul's Ashley Gang, Kendall Morse, Tom Hall, Animaterra, and a bunch of "Cattegie Hall" recordings by the likes of WyoWoman, Mbo, MMario, DaveO and wife, Sparky Hudson (katlaughing's dad), and Woodchuck's Revenge. If I didn't love them, I wouldn't play them.

I must admit, though, my favourite is a fellaaaaahhh by the nayhme a Kendall Morse from yer Maihhne. I guess my perference for Kendall stems from the fact that his three recordins are not just tunes, but include storaay tellin of the fiiinest Maihhne tradition. It's kinda like bein righhhht in the kitchen with this heahhh fellahhhh whilst he's a goin ohhhn. I've got three of his rechhordin's and I've enjoyed each moah than th' othah.

Sorry, Kendall, but if ljc can get away with it, why can't I try to emuluate that endearing and soothing Maine accent ?

Seamus Kennedy is wonderful live or on CD!! I have Bill and the Boyz "Bridging the Gap" and it is just stupendous. Bertie ain't shabby either. Don't have any other recordings of MCers, except what I used to hear on the Radio which are still archived.

Too many to list. FSGW was awash with Mudcat singers/players - and what a treat it was! I've heard recorded music too from some fine, talented Mudcatters.

I second all the names listed above, but there is one fine Mudcat talent you might not have heard; Kim C. She is a fine song writer with a strong, sensual voice. She and her husband have recorded a few Civil War era songs and originals - the recording is well worth listening to.

OK - now to gracelessly transition into a shameless self plug. Y'all can listen to a few tracks from my last CD here if you have a mind too. MP3.com - no cost streaming over the web. I get a half a cent every time someone listens all the way through. At this point, since last Jan, I've earned about $3! ;-)

I will be putting up a recording soon on MP3 from the next album - Rick, Big Mick and I made this track last Feb in Toronto. I have a few things to get done before I can post that track, but it'll be there in the next month or so. I guess it'll be a sample for the record we are doing next summer.

Greg's band and Jerry's wonderful singing, I reviewed a few weeks ago... Jerry is a wonderful story teller in his music, and Greg evokes the best of Englands wonderful north... brilliant stuff...

I have heard Seamus on many an occasion when I lived closer to Harry Browne's in Annapolis.

I was gifted with a tape of Mmario's one year (still have it someplace, though after all the moving I've done, it'd take me some time to find it).

And, of course, I have heard my sister, CarolC when she was staying at my folks place for the holidays a few years ago. Of course, I'd say "You're not gonna *play* that thing...are you?" ;D

Apart from a couple of tapes I got from Jerry Rasmussen (which are great!) I haven't heard any other Mudcatters. Which is why I think the C.D. was such a good idea. That said, where am I best looking for other 'catters music? Would I find stuff in U.K. music stores or on the internet?

I've heard a few Mudcatters in person, informally [Stewart, Winniemih, Amos] and I've heard Joe Offer [singing "The Key of R"} and Áine via links here at the Café. Those are the only ones that come to mind at the moment. I can't do Paltalk, cuz I use Mac. Maybe someday I'll use a friend's Windows set up to do the Paltalk thing.

I'm amazed that I *have* heard most of the people mentioned so far - and can add Celtic Soul, Skivee, plus several people who have posted occasionally as guest, Guinesschik; And tho' can't say I actually heard her, I did see Muse's lips moving during a song! AND I've heard the offspring of several mudcatters, including Shadowmonk, Mrzzy's Timothy and Don Miexner's son Greg.

Can't forget Alan of Oz, the Fair One, skarpi and his band, dharmabum,Hardiman. There have to be more, but that's quite a few!

Reviews mentioned by Dani.. not from me but I will say what I have heard by Mudcatters covers a great variety of styles and abilities ranging from world class (I'd certainly put what I've heard of Rick Fielding's playing in that league for example) to competent floor singer/player. The big thing to me is that I can honestely say I have enjoyed listening to every one I have heard, perhaps especially the few "debuts" I have heard of ones that have needed a little persuading to risk a first live Paltalk/ Hearme attempt.

Good suggestion, Dani: For one who hasn't heard most Mudcatters (or am even sure who they are,) I'd appreciate hearing two or three sentences about them. Not just that they're "good" or someone "likes them," or the worst damnation, that they're "interesting." After all, how I am I supposed to have even the faintest clue about what kind of music Mudlark or 53 do?

I have personally played with Ferrara, Bill D, and CarolC. Fun folks and a great style in all of them. Heard Dan Milner and Bob Conroy do the Irish in America Concert (I'd add them and crew to the world class group), Wotcha, and numerous others at the Chantey Sing in Washington DC - Wotcha is a very moving individual to hear him sing - the rest were simply great (about 15 or 20 Catters doing Chanteys), and everyone Jon Freeman mentioned including Jon himself (Jon has an incredible talent and is one of those who had to be "coaxed" into playing). I have several of Jerry Rasmussen's albums, Ian B's albums, and have really enjoy them. Jed Marum is very good also - as a writer and a singer - and I've enjoyed his CD immensely.

I have no doubt that any album done by Catters would be worth paying for. This is an amazing crew and the talent continues to improve as we get to know each other better. The Paltalk sessions have continually improved with individuals who were a bit timid in the beginning now letting their real self out - I'm continually impressed.

I have recordings by Jed and by Kendall, and they are both quite fine. Mister and I have enjoyed them very much.

As I am not PalTalk enabled, and I don't live near any other Catters, I suspect there is a great deal I have missed.

I have CDs from Art Thieme, Rick Fielding, Jed Marum, Liam's Brother, bert, and Sorcha Dorcha. Art's stuff is sitting-by-the-campfire homegrown folk music featuring Art's excellent banjo and guitar work. Rick's is a more contemporary folk sound, with his very mellow vocals and consummate picking, and featuring some of the best trad session musicians backing him. Jed's album is notable for the songwriting and is some of the best historically flavored music written by a contemporary songwriter that I've heard. Liam's Brother does Irish sea songs, and is an excellent singer against a spare background of squeezebox only. bert's album is a real joy. Any one who listened to Mudcat Radio knows that bert likes the English music hall novelty stuff, and his songs reflect that humor and those catchy melodies. InOBU's CD of Sorcha Dorcha is some great ceiledh material packaged with Larry's original politically-potent material.

I've also heard, live, Rex Rideout (who can play anything with strings twice as better than I will), Wyowoman (who has a magnificent soprano voice), Bill Sables (a true pro in folk music. You NEED to hear him sing The Band Played Waltzing Matilda), Sorcha (a hot fiddler), Katlaughing (love that Prairie Lullaby!), Allan C (terrific Irish tenor) and guinnesschik (the kind of bold clear voice that's perfect for Irish trad).

I almost forgot to mention MattR (mbo), who sent me a tape of his music. Versatile is not even close to describing what kind of a range of styles Matt can cover.

He won't like this, but Harvey is a big name on the UK folk circuit, so if you haven't heard/seen him, jump at the next chance you get.

Sandy and Caroline Paton are at the top of my list. It was their obvious love of the music, willingness to talk about it with complete strangers and, of course, fine singing and playing that got me hooked on this music at the ripe young age of 16. Interestingly, a 14-year-old fellow Paton fan recently expressed just about the same sentiments -- Sandy and Caroline just don't stop keeping the flame alive. They introduced me (not at the same time) to folks like Jerry Rasmussen and Rick Fielding, two of the very best songwriters I've ever heard, and to characters like Art Thieme, who just may be my favorite folksinger ever, and Kendall, whose combinaton of music and stories have warmed my heart for the last 27 years or so. All of the aforementioned have recorded for that great labor of love called Folk-Legacy, which has provided me with about one-third of the songs I perform myself.

Newer musical treats from Mudcat-member performers have come from Dan & Bonnie Milner (who also have recorded for Folk-Legacy), friend-of-my-heart and swell singer-of-Irish-songs Big Mick, and Jeri, whose singing is powerful and emotional and just gets better and better every time I hear her. She's giving Jerry R. and Rick F. a run for their money in the songwriting category too. Her songs and tunes (the ones I've heard) are all winners.

I'm lucky to live in the Washington, DC, area, hotbed of both a thriving local folk scene and of large hunks of Mudcat-dom, and have heard all the Mudcatter "locals" perform at one time or another. I'll refrain from detailed reviews here, since they all know how to find me (*BG*), but will just say that my musical world has been much-enriched by having folks like Mary LaMarca (a fine singer with husband George Stephens of Australian songs, English and Scottish occupational songs, traditional ballads, and musical settings of Rudyard Kipling's poems), SongsterBob (fine banjo player, prolific songwriter), Chance Shiver (Fortunato -- everything from the Carter Family to rockabilly), Bill D., Ferrara, Judy Cook, and many others living and singing so close by. If you want to hear them, see the related thread about the FSGW Getaway, and come join us in October! More and more Mudcatters are coming every year, and I've been lucky enough to meet and hear lots of them. Jed Marum, also a wonderful songwriter, came last year for the first time, a real treat to hear. Lots of others, too. --Kathy

I'm listening to Bill Sables CD, Bridging The Gap, and it is a real delight. Fine musicianship, great selection of songs, and Bill is a fine singer. I particularly liked Whitby Fisherman and Napolean Crossing the Rhine. Sam Pirt is a wonderful accordian player and Young Ian fills out the trio with just what is needed. Excellent work, fellas!

Roger Gall aka The Shambles is a fine musician,loved Llanfair's cd, Jenellen has a wonderful singing voice, Seamus Kennedy is a talented man and a consummate professional,Gervase has all the talent in the world,Micca writes terrific songs, Lanfranc is simply brilliant, Kendall has a delivery that has me filling up on the first line and choking with laughter on the next, Noreen has a beautiful voice (matches her nature) as does Diva, Alan W.W sings possibly the best shanty ever .....dammit, I've run out of adjectives and I'm only part way through the list.....I'll have to come back to this....damn good thread though.

Just heard Merrick Hamilton's band, and was knocked out by it. Now if you think that it was theDevil who invented the electric guitar, read no further. At least in the band, Merrick plays lead guitar and he doesn't have to lay his guitar down for anyone. Some cuts, he plays acoustic guitar, and some he plays electric guitar. Acoustic or electric, he's one of the finest guitarists I've heard.

Mmario...It was quite a long time ago, but what I do remember was that there was a song he had written that stuck with me. It was quite good.

CarolC...well, I already reviewed her in the last one! ;D In all fairness, I have always admired her ability with the recorder. I just wish she would not have taken up the blinkin' accordian. How about tin whistle, Carol? Appalachian dulcimer? Banjo? Harpsichord? Anything, please...

The Five Portaferry weekends let a LOT of us hear each other , but my FAVOURITE MudCat singer is maryrrf , the other half of SilverSmith ! The Getaway in 2005 let me hear and enjoy SO Many that I wont even attempt a list ! And of course here in UK we do get to meet each other at clubs and festivals so much easier than in USA and Oz !

Well I've heard everyone who's on any of the Mudcat Blue Plate Specials plus others on different CDs/tapes: Rick Fielding, Jed Marum, Marion, KyTrad (Jean Ritchie), Harvey Andrews, and maybe others whose names aren't popping into my mind right now.   On the whole, a very talented lot, between the singing, the instruments, and the songwriting.

In person I've also heard these folks:
~Amos (many a time -- that boy can sure pick! And he's got a great voice and writes a helluva song too)
~mg (Mary Garvey) -- probably one of the most underrecognized folk songwriters among us (Gordon Bok has recorded several of her songs), and she has a lovely voice too
~Barbara (Blessings, Barbara) -- she is a treasure house of songs and a delight to listen to
~Naemonson - heard him at a jam in Balboa Park (San Diego) - great voice
~The Banjoest (Hugh) - fantastic on the banjo (Amos feels like he needs to smoke a cig after he and Hugh get through a Balboa Park pickin' 'n' grinnin' session! Just ask Amos
~Stuart (Henderson) -- excellent with that fiddle, has a rich trove of trad songs, and a lovely baritone voice to boot
~Charley Noble -- great shanty voice and writes some very funny stuff
~Deckman (Bob Nelson) and Don Firth -- both put on a great show with trad music, good musicians who sing real purty and know lots of folk song history trivia (which I love)
~David Ingerson - a great collector and singer of Celtic songs - always a great addition to a song circle
~Reggie Miles - play's that saw like nobody's business! Plays a pretty mean guitar too and does a lot of really funny songs, many being his own compositions
~MouseThief (where the heck did you go, Alex?) -- gorgeous deep voice and a great do wop singer on top of writing some really good stuff (especially the funny songs)

Some of the other catters I've heard live have been mainly in group sings, so my not commenting on their voices has mainly to do with the fact that I haven't heard them solo -- or that it's been too long since I've heard them. But there's not a one that's hard on the ears:
~MAG (at Camp Runamok) - we duetted at Singtime Frolics - learned some good songs from her
~WinnieMih
~Robinia (also has a wealth of great trad songs I hadn't heard till she sang them)
~Art and Jen Brooks
~Fred (Maslan)
~MudJack (at Camp Runamok) - a man who definitely needs no microphone! I'm jealous. :D

~Marion - excellent songwriter as well as a gutsy wandering minstrel and busker
~Amergin (at Camp Runamok) - writes some very nice poetry and songs

I know I'm probably forgetting someone, but it's nice to think back on all the many catters I've jammed with or heard in concerts or at festivals.   Not a one that I wouldn't enjoy hearing or singing/jamming with again. Really looking forward to the Getaway so I can hear more of youse guys.
