Subject: lyrics/song title/composer From: GUEST Date: 29 Mar 02 - 09:24 PM 25 years ago a friend played me an album. One tune had a chorus (or the fade out) which said: "Can you hear me Alaska, you are the country, you are the nation, you shall survive." (continuing with other states). There is the line "children in Montana learn the golden rule". Anyway, I've never been able to get it out of my mind -- and I've never been able to track it down. Anyone recognize this? And thank you beforehand. |
Subject: Lyr Add: SURVIVORS (John Stewart) From: Jim Dixon Date: 25 Nov 07 - 09:52 PM From a web site called California Bloodlines: SURVIVORS John Stewart © John Stewart, All Rights Reserved "Wingless Angels" (RCA, APL1 0816, 1975) He broke his back to put the food on the table. In Columbus Ohio he said to his wife, "I believe that the flag it was more than a rag, But the outlaws in office have shattered my life." Can you hear me Ohio? You are the country. You are the nation. You will survive. Can you hear me Ohio? You are the country. You are the nation. You will survive. Children in Cheyenne are taught in their schools Believe in the country; don't break any rules. But the TV is on and they know something's wrong. Someone must tell them to keep pushing on. Can you hear me Wyoming? You are the country. You are the nation. You will survive. Can you hear me Wyoming? You are the country. You are the nation. You will survive. Devils and angels belong in the church. You try for the best and you deal with the worst. Just keep on plugging, you old nine to five, For you are the heartbeat that keeps us alive. Can you hear me Virginia? You are the country. You are the nation. You will survive. Can you hear me Dakota? Can you hear me Colorado? Can you hear me California? Can you hear me Wisconsin? Can you hear me Arizona? Can you hear me in Georgia? Can you hear me in Texas? Can you hear me Hawaii? Can you hear me Alaska? You are the country. You are the nation. You will survive. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Survivors (John Stewart) From: GUEST Date: 27 Feb 19 - 12:00 AM I remember this sone from around 1975-6 (and I have the original album in the collection somewhere but I don't recall the album title). I think it was written about the time of the Watergate scandal and reflects the optimism of the post-Nixon era. Oh, that we had that optimism today... cj in NM |
