Shoot, if I'd seen this thread in 2002 I could have answered the OP's request.

"He thinks it is a very old song considered a ballad or folk song." That's a good one; the song was written in the `60s and recorded by The Youngbloods on Elephant Mountain.. The only folk connections, however tenuous, are that onetime Fairport Convention vocalist Ian (now Iain) Matthews recorded it on his 1976 solo album Go For Broke, and American-Irish band Solas in 2002 on The Edge of Silence. The song has been covered numerous time by artists such as Eric Burdon, Richie Havens, and Robert Plant.

He said he has only heard it about 3 times in his life time. He thinks it is a very old song considered a ballad or folk song. sorry I have no more than that. You guys have always been able to help on any lyric I was looking for so thought I would give it a try. Cindy

Thanks for some help. I am trying to find the lyrics to this song for my brother. He knows only that the title is "Darkest Dark" and some lyrics he remembers "in the shadow of your darkness, in the coolness of your depth... that is about all he can remember. Any help is greatly appreciated. I appreciate the responses already. Cindy

Can anyone help with the lyrics to Darkest Dark...some of the words are "let me lay in your shadow???? sleep in your cold????? Sure would appreciate the help.
