Subject: Tara TV From: cyder_drinker Date: 01 Apr 02 - 03:12 AM I was most upset to read this on the BBC's website this morning. Tara TV, the channel which broadcasts Irish TV to the UK, has been put into the hands of liquidators by the High Court in Dublin. The troubled station will be off air by the end of April after Mr Justice Brian McCracken heard it had debts of 22.8m euros (£14.1m). It is expected all 20 staff at its London and Derry offices will be made redundant. Tara was launched in 1997 as a joint venture between United Pan-Europe, which had an 80% stake, and the publicly-owned Irish station RTE. It carries much of RTE's content to the UK on cable and satellite including The Daniel O'Donnell Show and The Late Late Show, which was famously hosted by Gay Byrne until 1999.

Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 01 Apr 02 - 03:56 AM I won't miss The Daniel O'Donnell Show But have seen some great archive irish music programs on Tara Yesterday there was a great Transatlantic sessions program on Time to throw the TV (and sat dish) in the bin I think Roger |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: Fiolar Date: 01 Apr 02 - 04:02 AM Will miss the music programmes and the regular news from RTE at 9pm. Luckily for those who have sattelite they can still tune into channel 892 to pick up RTE radio. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: GUEST,Ard Mhacha Date: 01 Apr 02 - 06:57 AM I have read in "Ireland on Sunday" that all the Irish TV Stations will be available on Sky Satt on April 23rd. Ard Mhacha. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: Mrrzy Date: 01 Apr 02 - 11:22 AM I'd never heard of this, sounds like some American cable company should be showing it here in the US, no? |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Apr 02 - 11:53 AM Well, that is a pity - Here is a page about Tara - among the kind of dross you get everywehere, there's been some magic; not just some great music (not D O'D!), Gaelic Sports, some good news coverage, notb just about Ireland by any means, plays...
I only hope the cable company I use (ntl) starts putting out some Irish channels. But I'm not too hopeful.
But I'm astonished if there really isn't an Irish channel on American TV. If there isn't it just goes to show that these guys are not as smart as they like to make out. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 01 Apr 02 - 12:03 PM Ceases 4th april at 1 am |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: GUEST,Ard Mhacha. Date: 01 Apr 02 - 12:25 PM McGrath, I repeat, according to the Irish newspaper Ireland on Sunday" ALL THE IRISH TV STATIONS will be on SKY on April 23rd. This information was also reported in "The Irish News". Sorry Mrrzy Sky is not available in the US. Ard Mhacha. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: Roger in Sheffield Date: 01 Apr 02 - 12:36 PM AM Tara TV says otherwise...... |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: McGrath of Harlow Date: 01 Apr 02 - 12:52 PM Exactly, I'm hoping the cable company takes up the channels as well as the satellite company. But with no great confidence. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: michaelr Date: 01 Apr 02 - 10:29 PM McGrath - by "these guys" are you referring to U.S. TV programmers - or to the Irish? ;-) Michael |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: Airto Date: 02 May 02 - 04:27 AM To clarify what Ard Mhacha says above, RTE 1 and 2 are available on Sky Digital - but only if your subscription address is in Ireland (north or south). I find this limitation ridiculous, but I guess it's to do with the cost of screening bought-in programmes and films, which make up a very high proportion of their output. The total potential audience on the island of Ireland is about 5.5 million, and RTE presumably pay screening rights based on that figure. If their stations were to be available to all Sky cardholders, they might be forced to pay many times more. |
Subject: RE: OBIT: Tara TV From: GUEST,Ard Mhacha Date: 02 May 02 - 09:06 AM Airto, The Irish News in an editoral, pasted RTE for not giving permission for Sky to beam their programmes to the North. Typical of RTE they are a true Free State Station, Sky say it is not theit policy, and blame RTE for holding out. As usual the manana complex comes to the fore as RTE say their Programmes will be available in two months, don`t hold your breath. Ard Mhacha
