Agree Bob.
The Leahy's are a well respected and appreciated by all across Canada, but they are not from Quebec.
I was at the Pembroke Old Time Fiddling and Step Dancing Championships on the Labour Day weekend and a young lady by the name of Adel Leahy took first place for the class of 9 and under for fiddling and step dancing. Mum played the piano and Dad played the fiddle while she danced. Unfortunately I did not hear who her parents were as the audience were just to loud when the M/CF made his announcement.

Not even Ottawa Valley really, from what I understand - I believe they're from Lakefield, just outside of Peterborough - closer to Toronto than to Ottawa. There may well be some Ottawa Valley influence there, though .... The Leahys used to do straight-ahead Ontario old-time - like you'd hear in a contest - dressed in what you might call C&W garb - until the Celtic thing took off. Of course, I don't know what they played at home.

Édouard Richard. Saw him at the Calgary folk festival a few years ago and bought a copy of his CD `Musique gaspésienne` released in 2000.
I have a copy of Ti-Jean Carignan`s LP,`Le Violoneux` issued in 1977 under the Totem label TO-9221.
I will be seeing Genticorum in concert here in November. Their music is supposed to be a blend of Québecois, Acadian and Celtic - perfect for me.
Agree with Meself`s comment that Leahy has nothing to do with Québec. They`re an Ottawa Valley family and their mother is a Cape Bretoner. Chatted with some of them after a concert here a couple of years ago and mentioned I had found lyrics to Ashokan Farewell (in the Mudcat database). They had payed the tune with some sensitivity but didn`t know what it was called.

Note - I see there are lots of Jean Carignan videos online available under the missspelling Jean Carignon, should you be looking. (In fact, more under the misspelling, than the correct spelling.)

I can't help with Quebecois fiddlers..but that does not stop me from chiming in....April Verch is from Ottowa and certainly seems influenced by Quebec to me...also lots of Newfoundlanders play in somewhat of a Quebecois style on the French Coast..sounds like that to me anyway...there are also some great great Metis young women fiddlers I have seen on you tube. And I personally can probably still play St. Anne's Reel..oh Reel de Sainte?? Anne?? mg

Ahhh... does that qualify as Quececois? It isn't particularly in the style all the time. Might be too much Irish and "modern tecnical" in there?

If there is too much technical, I am sure Natalie will inject some dirty Caper (Cape Breton style) fiddle in there at some point (Natalie MacMaster married that VERY lucky lad on the fiddle a while back... I wonder if their kids will play fiddle at all eh?)

Olivier Demers of Le Vent du Nord, Andre Brunet of De Temps Antan and
Pascal Gemme of Genticorum are all great young fiddlers playing traditional Quebecois music. Ti-Jean Carignan is a master of that genre and well worth listening to.
By the way Grand Derangement is an Acadian band not Quebecois and not really a traditionl band but well worth listening to. Other good Acadian bands with fiddlers are Vichten, Tradition and Suriot.

You don't need to go to dead quebecois fiddlers for great tunes & style!
There are many younge fiddlers (40 and under) who are keeping the
tradition alive. Amoung the older (I believe he's still alive) is
Jean Marie Verret and his son. The Verrets are famous for old style
Quadrille tunes, and for a rich tradition of family tunes. Thier music
is available on CD. In the 30something crowd is Olivier Demers of
Le Vent du Nord (a terrific, high energy band well worth hearing).
And there are many NY/NE fiddlers playing in this style as well.
If you're interested in learning tunes & style, I would suggest
Laurie Hart's "Dance ce Soir!" CD and tune teaching book.
She's very connected to the music scene up there. There are numerous
traditional music and fiddle festivals in Quebec. Laurie could
point anyone in the right direction. Google her for contact info.

The best quebecois fiddler is Jean Carignan, he is a genius. He died about 20 years ago but you can hear him on disc and see him play on a video (you can buy this video via AQLF (www.quebecfolklore.qc.ca, item: MAGHDVD-118 $25 Can and a 3 CD set for $30 Can, item TCD3-2188-2). Joseph Allard is really good too, he sas Carignan's teacher. I like Louis Pitou Boudreault also

Take a look at the Quebec National Library site at

This contains hundreds of 78s transcribed into real audio.

Follow the links to "index des sujet" and then to any of the categories. There isn't one specificaly for violins but the category "Danse folklorique, Musique de" contains lots of violin recordings.

If you put "Carignan" in the super search, there have been many mentions of him in various threads. here's one of them by Dan Milner aka "Liam's Brother:"

... few weeks ago, I found the February 17th, 1988 Montreal Gazette obituary of Jean Carignan. I'm sure sure many a Mudcatter knows that "Ti-Jean," a Montreal taxi-driver, was the most renowned Canadian fiddler of his time. About 20 years ago, I heard him play at a festival of New England and Eastern Canadian folk music at Brown University in New Hampshire. Carignan said he first learned his craft from his father and from native (Indian) fiddlers in Quebec and then he talked about the first time he heard a record of the Co. Sligo fiddle master, Michael Coleman. I remember to this day how intently he talked about that experience of hearing the fiddle played as he never had before, about how he could not sleep at all that night, about how he strove to make music like that phonograph sound.

Once upon a time, the Philo label had some great traditional Quebec music, but they let it all go out of print. Louis Beaudoin was one, also some reissues of Joseph Allards 78's. County Records also had the Riendeau Family, but it's out of print. Maybe you can find someone who has these records. There is some French Canadian folk music available on Folkways. What's wrong with you people in Canada? Start reissueing some of your 78Rpm music.

Ti-JeanCarignan died some years ago, I think. Seems to me he was mentoned in a thread a few months back, but I was unable to find a link. There are a number of CDs, one of which is a three CD set called Archives, pub. by Disques Tout Crin, 1998.

As well, a National Film Board documentary exists. (Jean Carignan, violoneux, Office national de film de Canada, 1975)En francais, but still quite a treat to watch even if you don't speak French. His playing derived from the Irish/Scottish styles, and the only non-French words in the film were when he counted off on his fingers his influences - Coleman, Morrison, Skinner.

Hello all. My grandfather and greatgrandfather were Quebecois fiddlers, but that was before my time and I never heard either of them. But I've always meant to learn something about traditional Quebecois fiddling. Can anyone suggest some good recordings/fiddlers to seek out?

When I say good, I don't mean the most talented or the most entertaining but rather the most representative of the Quebecois tradition.

Suggestions for videos would be great too, as I know that the footwork is important.
