Subject: Lyr Add: THE HOLLY AND THE IVY (neo-pagan version? From: GUEST,Mareike Date: 02 Apr 02 - 05:27 AM Maybe you mean this song. THE HOLLY AND THE IVY
CHORUS: Oh, the rising of the sun and the running of the deer
Oh, the Holly and the ivy when they are both full-grown,
The Holly blooms in glory when the solstice day is near.
Throughout the land she wanders with the new day-lit God,
Praise the Queen of Air and Earth, of Fire and Water.
Now Blessed be the Earth at rest beneath our feet,
Oh, the ivy is the maiden; the holly is her love.
'Tis at Yule when the Mother gives birth to the coming Spring.
She is in all our loving, in all we love and fear.
All in the holy Circle, hand to hand we pass the blade
Out of Darkness shall come dawning; out of Winter shall come Spring. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when the holly blooms From: GUEST,Mareike Date: 02 Apr 02 - 06:10 AM OK, maybe it's a little bit difficult to read what I wrote... But I found it on http://www.indigostorm.net/BookofChanges/1998/Dec/12_21_98.html maybe you can read that better... |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when the holly blooms From: IanC Date: 02 Apr 02 - 06:14 AM Marieke I saw that myself, but rathe doubted if Steph's friend's 81 year old grandmother really remembered a recently-altered (not to say hacked-up) Christmas carol from her youth.
Cheers! |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when the holly blooms From: GUEST,999 Date: 17 Sep 12 - 03:50 PM The song title is mentioned in a newspaper dated Dec 23, 1899, so it predates that I'd think. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: when the holly blooms From: maeve Date: 17 Sep 12 - 04:38 PM F. Scott Fitzgerald, writing in September of 1913, appears to quote the carol in a letter "...Remember, Litz, until we meet "when the Holly blooms" in three months... " http://www.ny.bloomsburyauctions.com/detail/NY004/187.0 We may need help from the 'Catters who have a wealth of older carols and other songs of the period. |
