Us Woodchucks have a triple this year. On Saturday, IIRC, we're leading a country/bluegrass/old-time/whatever jam or song circle or something. On Sunday, we have a humorous songs workshop with Evy Meyer and Mike Agravat Agranoff; then a "story songs" set on our own, late in the afternoon.

If anyone is shocked by the idea of paying to listen to Woodchucks, we have a gig at the Nashua, NH, Borders at 8:00 the Friday night before, which is free.

Peter.

this is going to be fun except for the usual problem of wanting to be in at least three places at once, especially Saturday and Sunday! (they have our Carter Family workshop opposite the Sacred Harp sing AND Animaterra!). We'll be leading the aforementioned Carter Family workshop and also in the "string, weed and rind jam" that Drew Smith does every year & looking forward to seeing lots of friends. Hey Woodchucks-- one of the bands we are in (not at this festival, though) is called Waking Up Tillie, a rescued groundhog who is the band mascot with pictures to prove it! lookiing forward to seeing you all!

My husband and I (Stephens and LaMarca) have a set at 2:45 of Kipling/Bellamy songs in the North Star Room - John Roberts has graciously said he'll come do a song or two in it... We're also going to accompany our friend KathWestra on a couple songs in her set at 1:00 in the Music Room.

We like doing NEFFA because it gives us a chance to get together with our New England friends, but it always seems too hectic, with so many places you want to be at the same time - as Firesign said, "How can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?"

Bob Conroy, Bonnie Milner of THe Johnson Girls, Nancy-Jean Seigel and I are doing a presentation on and of Irish Songs from Old New England, specifically Irish-American songs from the Flanders Ballad Collection. That is on Saturday afternoon about 3PM as I recall. That's our only turn at NEFFA so we will have more time to walk the halls and listen to others.

All the best,
Dan Milner

Mudcatter Suffet will be doing a Songs for the Road performance with Valentine Doyle at 8:30 Saturday evening. I also see that he'll be leading a Woody Guthrie Jam Session at 4 o'clock Saturday afternoon, and I have a sneaking suspicion that a song or two from that jam session may just find its way into the evening set. For anyone who's seen Big Stevie, that should come as no surprise. In fact, I would be truly shocked if it doesn't happen.

Must indulge my burning passion for the morris.....!

On a separate but tenuously related note: saw Waterson:Carthy at the Whaling Museum in New Bedford last Friday night. There were a few technical glitches, but they were rocking as always. I was really impressed by the new accordion player, Tim van Eycken, he is EXCELLENT!

Caroline and I will be there, person-ing our booth with additional CDs from Camsco provided by Dick Greenhaus and Susan Friedman. Stop by and say hello. We'll be right by the front entrance, I think. Look to see Karen K there, too, when she's not busy with her own workshops.

Caroline and I scheduled for "Ballads and Songs from the US and the UK" (that's how they titled it) at 4 o'clock on Saturday and we're hoping Liam's brother and Bonnie are still planning to share that session with us. Then on Sunday, 1:30, Caroline and I will offer a session of "favorite songs and ballads" and certainly hope many of our friends will join us there. The rest of the weekend will find us toiling away at the booth.

Saturday we're doing a country song swap at 6:15 pm in the North Star room. Sunday at 1:00 pm is a humorous song program with Mike Agranoff and Evy Meyer, in the Music Room, and "Story Songs" at 4:00 pm in the Natick Room.

Plus a good amount of jamming and a certain necessary amount of eating.

Music: Excellent
Organization: Very well done

Brief report from NEFFA 2002:

(With my editorial comments)

Parking: Horrendous

Yes, I'd assume it was, on Saturday, at least. What we did was get a motel room right at the off-ramp from I-90 exit 13, which was about 5 minutes walk from the TJX lot. Then we walked to the lot and took the shuttle bus, leaving the van at the motel. Worked for us. Sunday we drove to the school early and parked while the public lots were still empty. Were at the school an hour before it opened up, but jamming in the sun was nice.

Food: Good and fairly priced It seemed overpriced to me, but I'm in VT. I still take issue with all the available food being more or less exotic. I'd like to be able to get a hamburger and fries it that's what I want. There was some good stuff, but a lot more that was too strange for me. Sorry.

Dance: Excellent No comment. Not my thing. An awful lot of people seemed to think so, though.

Music: Excellent Well, not uniformly (and if I thought so, modesty would compel me to lie about it, since we were playing). The average was certainly very high, though.

Organization: Very well done Yes, as always. I got the impression on Saturday that they were bumping up against the limits of the site in terms of the size of the crowd, however.

Peter.

My biggest beef was no time to commune with friends! I solved the parking dilemma- both days I was involved with early morning gigs so arrived before 8:15 and got executive parking in the closest lot! Saw a lot of Catters very briefly, heard a lot of music, danced with my sweetie, now I'm home and ready for some quiet!
Was it me or did the crowds seem smaller this year?

My first visit to NEFFA. My impression from Saturday was that the site was bursting at the seams. I enjoyed most of the mini-concerts I attended; unfortunately a few were poorly performed, with clear indications of lack of preparation by presenters. One of the classrooms smelled of mold and should have been sealed off by the state health department. I enjoyed the variety of food. I was annoyed by some of the jammers in hallways, adjacent to workshop or mini-concert space; however what I interpret as rudeness others would view as free expression. I maxed out my credit cards at the music sales tables. There were some great opportunities for chorus singing. Next time I want to stay over so I can hang out more, and make creative noise in the hallways.;~)

I was there on Saturday (day) only. I didn't seem to do anything BUT chat...and buy stuff. Played a couple of really great guitars, made by Running Dog. I only made it to one workshop (UK and US Ballads & Songs with Sandy & Caroline Paton and Dan Milner.)

I kept seeing folks I hadn't seen for a long time and talking to them for a bit. We'd go our separate ways and I'd run into someone else. It went like that all day. I still managed to miss running into Kath Westra, SongBob & Knitpick and probably loads of other folks. Saw Naemanson & Rebecca and Charlie Noble once, briefly, and never saw them again. Same with Barry Finn. I managed to wave at Animaterra and her sweetie across a room.

I REALLY wanted to go to George & Mary LaMarca's Kipling workshop, also Barry Finn's, but I just couldn't stop running into people. I'm sorry I missed all that music, but it was still good catching up.

Putting the shanty singing on at 9PM was NOT NICE. Too late for me to stay, and I wouldn't have had any voice by then if I HAD stayed. It's my only complaint, and yes, I saw the link for the evaluation form. Thanks for posting it, Jacob.

"Ye Mariners All" with John Roberts scheduled at 10 pm was even worse for those of us who were not committed to staying over. I know, it's our own fault for living 3 hours away. Actually, Jeri, I'm sure you could have heard Don Seneti's "Blood-Red Roses" from your driveway in NH, if you were awake enough to listen.;~)

Rebecca and I had a great time. I wish I had seen more of the Mudcat contingent. I saw Jeri briefly and the Chucks, Big, Mid, and Mrs., though I only had a chance to speak to Sandy. Of course there was Dick and Susan and Sandy and Caroline and Karen K. And Bat Goddess and her Curmudgeon. I kept looking for Animaterra but missed her completely.

It seems there are two conflicting things to do at the festival. Visit and attend the events.

I did buy a nice set of macasar ebony bones from Steve Brown.

All in all a great day though we were quite tired at the end of it.

Let me explain my comments on the food. I am used to paying captive-audience rip-off prices. If I hop across the GWB to a club in Manhattan, I expect to pay $2 for a Coke, but I don't like it when a festival pulls that same bullcrap. That's why NEFFA was a pleasant surprise. I admit the Indian food was overpriced, but then I'm spoiled by the many $6 all-you-can-eat Indian buffets in the New York metro area. Everything else was what I called fairly priced. Not neessarily cheap, but fair value. There was at least one bargain to be had: 50c for lemonade at the Lithuanian food table. The Mexican table was charging $1.50 for a cup of lemonade that was only about 50 percent larger.

By my tastes the food was a bit pricey for less than average fare, but then other years, when I'm more on the ball I've just pack a cooler full of food & liquids. So shame on me. The music was excellent. Had lots of trouble choosing workshops, so I split most in half, didn't want to miss a thing. My daughter (14) asked to come along Saturday with a girlfriend & both liked the dancing, much to my suprise. My son came Sunday & wanted to check out workshops that had anything to do with the fiddle, he's just starting on one. Caught a few people. Lamarca & hubby are always a treat. Aside from them being very healthy for my ears, their choice of material is just as great. Both came to help me out (my partner got pulled away for a work emergency) at my workshop along with Bonnie & Dan Milner. I didn't catch the Milner's elsewhere so it was twice the pleasure, always a stand out job from both. Thank you, the 4 of you, for a hand & voice well lent. Caught the first half of Kathy Westra, she's always one who's not to be missed. Shipping News (one of them is usually lurking about here) was so right on the spot that I fogot to go to half of another workshop that I intended to make. Well maybe next year will be a bigger family affair. It's late for me after still trying to catch up on my beauty nap. I'm dead possitive I'm leaving out quite a bit. Good Night. Barry

Janice isn't the only lucky recipient, nor is NEFFA an isolated example. Copies of the "for performers only" grids of nearly all festivals get passed around long before the information is supposed to be made public.

Those preliminary grids are marked "do not circulate" for a reason. While NEFFA's preliminary schedules give a reasonable idea of WHO will be there, this version rarely reflects what actually ends up happening at NEFFA. I've performed there every year for 15 years or so, and my final time/room assignments for the actual festival rarely match the time/room info. on the preliminary grid. I wouldn't recommend it as a planning tool!

From: Suffet
Date: 27 Feb 03 - 10:41 PM

And for the first time ever, MacDougal Street Rent Party. So put on your black beret, light up a Gaulois, and let us transport you back to closing days of the Eisenhower era. A rag-tag band of cats and chicks have gathered in a rent controled Greenwich Village pad to make joyful noise the only way they know how. A dollar gets you in, and if you can't afford a dollar, just let everyone take a swig of Mateus from your wine skin. The bathtub is in the kitchen, the toilet is down the hall, the Great Folk Music Revival is about to happen, and you're invited to the HOOT! Can you dig it, man?

Dollar, Gaulois, and Mateus are mentioned only by artistic license. There is no separate admission, and neither smoking nor alcohol is permitted!

MSRP is paired with Woodchuck's Revenge for this event.

Jeri, you will also get a chance to meet Joel Landy, Mr. Suffet's partner in the hootenanny and one of the best young political song writers on the scene today. When you hear them together, you can close your eyes and swear that Woody Guthrie teamed up with Phil Ochs.
