I haven't thought about Demis Roussos in a long time, but his name came up in the anti-christ thread. I certainly wouldn't classify him as the anti-Christ, but how in the world did he achieve such success in, of all places, France? This was back in the mid to late seventies. He is (was - is he still around?) Greek but usually if not always sang in English, long unkempt hair, very overweight to the point where he usually wore caftan like garments. Come to think of it I think he was pretty popular in Germany at the time, too.

Didn't he perform on an album by "Aphrodities Child" entitled "666". I think the guy who performed Chariots of Fire was on it too. It was a big LP during the 70's but i haven't kept up with them.

He was the lead singer with Aphrodities Child, Vangelis was the keyboard player. Rousos is about to embark on a tour of TheU.K.and Ireland in the next month or two. So., he's definitely still around

Just out of curiousity I did a search on him - yep, he's still around and he still looks just like he did in the Seventies! I sure wish I did!

And do you remember Nana Miskouri (sp?) as well? She had a modicum of sucess in the 60's/70's. She even had a TV series I think. My most enduring memory is her spending about 5 minutes explaining, in English, what the Greek song was about and then singing it in about 45 seconds! But then again it was a long time ago...;-)

Cheers

(I wonder if they still sell those kaftans? Hmmmm.)

Don't knock Nana Mouskouri (also ?). I have an excellent LP of her singing British folk songs very well, and just for sport I occasionally lend a tape of it to somebody and ask them to identify the singer. Nobody has yet twigged.

I remember Nana Mouskouri well and I liked her singing, although if I recall the arrangements were often overdone. But she had (has - is she still around?) a beautiful voice and like Demis Roussous was popular in France and Germany. She had a lot of recordings in French and German, as well as English. She always wore very stark looking glasses and looked kind of like a schoolteacher.

Did a search on her. Yep, she's still around! Still wearing those glasses. She has done very well, according to her bio - lots of gold and platinum records.
