Sorry, the protagonist is Jack (not Jill), but momma's good as gold:

Someone Is Waiting For Me recorded by the Red Clay Ramblers (late 70s or early 80s) and by the Stoneman family in the 20s but reissued on "Round the Heart of Old Galax" (County Records).

Mary, here's a link to the liner notes for A Parents' Home Companion, a wonderful CD by Cathy Fink and Marcy Marxer. The song in the CD that touched me most was "Dear Mom." You'll find that song's lyrics last on the liner notes. This one CD could make your whole show.

Subject: ADD: My Mom's a Feminist (Kristin Lems)

Mother's Day Song, written by Rosalie Sorrels, might be a fun addition to your program. A storyteller, songwriter from Idaho, Sorrels included this song in her anthology songbook "What, Woman, and Who, Myself, I am". It's a fun song, and includes lyrics - "Now that the children have grown up, I can sleep until noon...Now that the children have gone away, I can sit down and write me a tune..."

My Mom's a Feminist (Kristin Lems) is another goodie!

MY MOM'S A FEMINIST
(Kristin Lems)

I pulled into the loading zone Feeling nervous, I was all alone
Unloading my equipment before the show
I started wheeling it down the hall
Till I turned, hearing a young man call
"Can I help? That must be heavy I know..
I've been looking forward to your show."

CHORUS
"Cause my mom's a feminist So I understand
That's why I'm here today I've come to lend a hand
I was raised on equal rights And furthermore
She helped me see That equality is a goal worth fighting for."

She decided she could do some good
Ringing doorbells in the neighborhood
Not for the Girl Scouts, but for ERA
Sometimes she takes her friends along
She's only 10, but she's already strong
She's a mover and a shaker well on her way
When they ask what she's doing, this is what she'll say. chorus

Different questions in the classroom now
Young seekers asking how
Things came to be, and how they can change
Becoming women and becoming men
May not ever be the same again
But the new ways won't be quite as strange
When the people they trust help them get it arranged.
Because we're feminists, so we understand
That's why we're here today, we've come to lend a hand
We raise them on equal rights, and furthermore
We help them see that equality Is a goal worth fighting for.

It's worth all the time you take
What a difference your time can make
For the new generation still coming along
If our movement is to last We must see that the torch is passed
And today's young people will grow up strong
And thousands more will sing this song!

"The Sweetest Gift, A Mother's Smile" is popular in bluegrass circles, written by James B. Coates, a song about a loving mother visiting her son in prison.

Another bluegrass mother song is "Hold Fast to the Right" by Robert and Bill Brumley, about a mother's advice when sending her son off to face the world.

On May 10th(Mother's Day) I'm doing a community radio show (WORT in Madison Wisconsin) and want to play songs closely or loosely related to mothers. It's a woman's music show and I would appreciate suggestions for songs with women's voices only relating to that idea. Any genre. Post here or email me: marywait@itis.com

Thanks so much to all,

Mary Waitrovich
