Subject: Arrangements for SATB wanted

I'm part of a very green work-based 4 part choir of around 14 members. We meet at lunchtime each week to sing. As yet, no ambitions to go public. But, we are desparate for music to perform. We have a number of African and "world" music pieces, some gospel, some classical, some Taize, very little folk. Does anyone out there do arrangements for choirs? We will of course pay for the service. We are located in Sydney, Australia, but I guess with technology, music can be emailed etc. Alternatively, are there any sites where I can purchase arrangements from? I've found a few, but they appear to mainly churchy or classical. Thanks in advance, Christine, Sydney, Australia.

Now, here's an idea:

Why not write your own arrangements?!?

Sure, you can do your own arrangements. And it's good to try. But some people are more skilled at this, than others.

Not to disparage, but I wouldn't advise everyone to write their own novels or plays, if they were simply interested in reading or acting....

There are some pop arrangements to order here. I guess, just e mail them.

There's information on arrangements at the A Cappella web site.

ChoralNet lists lots of resources for music. I searched SATB and Folk & got 114 hits.

I must admit that I find most choral arrangements of folk or popular music to be quite strange & out of character with the music itself.

Hi boobook,

What sort of songs are you looking for? Being a work-based choir, does that mean you are interested in workers' songs or does it just mean that you are a choir which gets together in your workplace?

If it isn't specifically work-related then I have 3 song books which we used in school (yonks ago) called Sing Care Away. The arrangements are very nice (in my opinion, and I love part singing) and the songs are traditional British & Irish songs, mostly - although a very conservative collection. Not all of them are SATB but there are some.

I'm in Newcastle, Oz, and I'd be very surprised if you couldn't find at least one volume of this set in a good music shop.

I just did a search on Google.com and found at least one second hand book shop in Oz which has them.

Thanks all for your suggestions. By work based, I meant we are fellow employees who sing at lunchtimes. And I would absolutely love to be able to write my own arrangements, but alas I can't read music, so that's out of the question at the moment. Now, leaving myself wide open for attack from the experts in here, I thought that a lot of folk music in the past was sung by groups of people? Thanks again for the suggestions - but I was hoping that lurking among the group was someone who wanted to earn money by doing some arrangements?

Agreeing with Burke, ChoralNet is a large site with lots of links to other good places. Argentinean and Latin American choral music is beautiful and not easy to find. If you are interested, possibly after some experience, I could send some traditional works for SATB that could be a pleasant surprise for your audience.

For new arrangements, I could also contact some excellent local musicians, but I guess that first of all your group would prefer something in the English/American/Australian tradition.

Un abrazo - Andrés in Buenos Aires
