Dear 'Catters',

Our video collection currently includes the following and we need some more.

Films about music: Spinal Tap, The Committments, Still Crazy, The Blues Brothers, Crossroads.

Performances: The Band 'The Last Waltz', John Fogerty 'Premonition', Rory Gallagher 'Irish Tour', 'Down From The Mountain', 'Alan Stivell', 'B.B. King & Friends', Cream 'Farewell Performance, Richard Thompson 'Across a Crowded Room', Gong 'Gong Maison', Chuck Berry/Keef Richards 'Hail, Hail, Rock and Roll', and the Seville 'Guitar Legends' festival.

We've also got some Victor Borge videos.

What we'd like is the kind of stuff you can watch with a couple of 'liquid friends', and if there are any Bluegrass, Cajun or Old Time videos about we'd be really interested.

Links to any English or American sites selling the above would also be appreciated.

Thanks in advance,

Ian and Marlene.

P.S. For the U.K. mob we strongly recommend the recent 'Bill Bailey' video.

P.P.S. For American types 'Evil Roy Slade'. This is not a music video, apart from the contributions of one 'Bing Bell' but it is bloody hilarious and you should be proud.

Capercaillie have a great video called "The Capercaillie Collection, 1990-1996". It has some MTV-type clips, but mostly it's live footage from festivals in Scotland. Highly recommended!

Cheers,
Michael

I've been devouring a video set of American Roots Music lately. If you haven't seen it, do. The clips are a bit short, but the footage is sublime.

If you're interested in jazz at all, you might like Ken Burns' documentary "Jazz" that aired on public television within the last year or so. i think it's for sale through the big book store chains.

haven't seen "Oh Brother Where Art Thou"? Not on your list but maybe an oversight? SB

See if you can find Heartworn Highways --- I ordered mine online from the Townes Van Zandt website. It features TVZ, Guy Clark, Steve Young, The Charlie Daniels Band and a load more, including a very young, very zonked Steve Earle in the background! There's also some hilarious footage of the incredibly camp David Allen Coe, covered head to toe in rhinestones, doing a prison gig.

"Get that fiddle up under yer chin where it belongs...there's ladies present!" Funniest American movie of all time. Thanks for the reminder. Try finding a copy of the T.A.M.I. Show from around 1966. Filmed w/3 b/w cameras at the Hollywood Bowl in L.A. James Brown, Leslie Gore, Jan and Dean, Rolling Stones all live. There was a second one shot with Smokey Robinson, Ike and Tina Turner, etc. Someone combined the two a few years ago, spliced in segways of Chuck Berry in color and called it 'That Was Rock'(I think). It's 'ok', but if you can get copies of the original films intact and uncut the performances are much longer(and better). I rented the Chuck Berry one to show to my son and nephews and they came away with much respect for all. In turn we watched a 2 hr. video of a punk group called NOFX(No-f-ex), drank some beer(except my son...too young)and told lies to one another. It was fun...a total 'guy hang'

I'm glad this thread got started. I guess I don't "get" music videos, or at least I find them strange and largely useless (Peter Gabriel is at least visually entertaining)... in fact, once I rented a copy of Independence Day, I think, some Will Smith movie, that had a music video at the beginning, and I didn't realize it WAS a music video and I thought it was the credits sequence to the movie, and then spent the rest of the movie trying to figure out how these opening scenes related to the actual plot! But can someone explain the attraction in general?

Mrrzy I think this thread is about 'music on video' as opposed to 'Music Videos'. Ian and Marlene are looking to build up their library of performances on tape. The purpose of a 'Music Video' is to be used as a marketting tool for the artist(s). The fact that you don't 'get' them means you're not part of the audience the marketters wish to target. There are plenty of people who do 'get' them and for better or worse they are here to stay in the music business. I'm in agreement with you, I think they're stupid and pointless for the most part, but would have a blast making one if asked.

Completely personal taste here,

The Rocky Horror Show .... it's just a step to the left .... and a jump to the right ....

And of course The Song Remains The Same. Great music - the video bit is SO bad it has a charm of it's own, (& of course Planty is cute.)

I really enjoy Peter Gabriel's music, but not the video bit - so I stick to Cds there.

Has anybody seen/heard the Show of Hands videos ????

Hilary

Michaelr,

Thanks pal, we'll get hold of it (together with Jenellen's suggestion.)

Slicker Bill,

We're interested in any kind of well played music and will try and turn up the video.

Bullfrog Jones,

Anything to do with Steve Earle, Charlie Daniels, David Allen Coe and Guy Clark must be worth looking at.

Jonesy, What video was that?

Mrrzy.

As spectators we want to see loads of different bands playing in our front room whilst we get completely smashed.

I personally would make a music video if I thought I was good enough.

Jonesy,

Forget marketing, we just want to see good players playing.

Hilary,

Didn't know 'Show of Hands' had done any videos, will explore.

Thanks to all of you for your replies....

In closing, 'catspaw49' your comments are right on the ball.

If any of you American Mudcatters don't own, or have never seen 'Evil Roy Slade' you should be ashamed of yourselves.

This is a cult movie in the U.K.

I had to buy it in from the USA and the carriage cost me more than the video.

IT WAS WORTH EVERY PENNY!

(Sorry to shout, but if you haven't seen it, you really haven't lived, it was the pre-cursor to 'Blazing Saddles')
