Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: CarolC Date: 08 Apr 02 - 10:32 PM The caption says it's a pedal steel. That's a relative of the dobro isn't it? |

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: rangeroger Date: 08 Apr 02 - 10:35 PM John, I presume you are asking about the Sho-Bud. Your link gives a listing of mandolins, a banjo and the Sho-Bud. It is a pedal steel guitar and is played by sitting at it and plucking the strings while sliding a steell up and down the strings. The pedals change pitch on the strings as you do this. A well played pedal steel is an incredible sounding instruent. Listen to Roger Gilmour of Pink Floyd. rr |

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Apr 02 - 10:36 PM It's a Pedal Steel and Carol is right. It's the illogical extension of the basic "steel" guitar. It's played using the strings as you would a dobro but it's also capable of changing tones by bending the strings with the pedals........Really big in honky-tonk style country music. Spaw |

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 08 Apr 02 - 10:44 PM Thanks Carol, I dont know what a dobro is ( I don't know much about instruments). It looks like some kindof keyboard type thing, but Antones is mainly a guitar shop , they only sell string instruments, it certainly looks interesting, I might go and have a look at it tommorow and ask man in shop what it is, (Antones is not far from my house), I have no intention of buying it, (at nearly 800pounds I couldn't afford it anyway!), but I would like to know what it is. |

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 08 Apr 02 - 10:48 PM Thanks rangergoer & Catspaw, it looks heavy doesn't it, I wouldn't fancy carrying it about! |

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 08 Apr 02 - 10:55 PM Thanks for the links Spaw.More questions! =Do you play it sitting down or stood up? And where does the sound come from? Is it electric? (Do you have to plug it in to hear it?)thanks.john |
|
Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: Rt Revd Sir jOhn from Hull Date: 08 Apr 02 - 10:59 PM I ask my first qustion properly, I know rangergoer said you should play it sat down, but it has got a knee pedal, how can you use the knee pedal if you are sitting down? (maybe you stand up for that bit) |
|
Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: rangeroger Date: 08 Apr 02 - 11:08 PM John you move the knee sideways to activate that pedal. And it is indeed plugged into an amplifier to produce the sound. If you get a chance see the Pink Floyd concert video " A Delicate Sound Of Thunder". DAVID Gilmour does an incredible lead using a pedal steel, and you can see how it is played. rr |

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: khandu Date: 08 Apr 02 - 11:12 PM The knees are use to move the pedals from left to right for one knee and vice-versa for the other. Yes, you do play it sitting. It is electric. Spaw is on target when he says it is very popular in honky-tonks. It is great for crying-in-your-beer, tear-jerker songs. Basically, I hate the sound. But, occassionally, I hear someone use it grandly. What's brown and looks good on a pedal-steel player? A Doberman. khandu |

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: Tweed Date: 08 Apr 02 - 11:55 PM Here's Arhoolie records page for the Campbell Brothers albums with some soundclips of the "sacred steel". Many of the black gospel players use tunings that are completely unconventional and kept secret but the effect is pretty darned electrifying.

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: catspaw49 Date: 08 Apr 02 - 11:55 PM Scroll down through this series of pictures of everything from the case to all of the mechanism underneath.....You don't get a lot of photos of this stuff!! Check it out Try A Conway Twitty song for pedal steel. Go the Rose the Record Lady and go to "Country Archives" PAGE THREE....Scroll to the bottom and click on the BOOT and listen to "Fifteen Years Ago"...THe opening and the filler between the verses is pedal steel along with some other riffs....It's the weepy/wailing, chorded, electric guitar sounding thing right at the beginning and you'll hear it all through the song. Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: michaelr Date: 09 Apr 02 - 01:54 AM Like the mandolin in bluegrass and the fiddle in Texas swing, the pedal steel guitar has been the defining sound in Nashville country music since the 1950s. In the 70s it fell into the hands of some hippie-cowboy bands from California, notably the Flying Burrito Brothers (Sneaky Pete Kleinow) and Poco (Randy Meisner), whose recordings are worth checking out. IMHO, a well-played pedal steel solo is one of the most exciting things in country music. Plus, the thing can only be played by a very specific sort of sub-genius, requiring as it does the coordination of two hands, two knees AND two feet. Cheers, Michael |

Subject: RE: BS: What is it? From: mooman Date: 09 Apr 02 - 04:21 AM Very well put Michael! A very specific sort of sub-genius. I like that! And very true! Better not spread it around though as Mudcat will quickly fill up with ego-inflated pedal steel players! Regards, mooman |
