The death has been announced of the actor and former husband of Shirley Temple. Born in 1921, he met her while still in the Air Force and was married in 1946. They were divorced in 1949. He starred in such films as "She Wore a Yellow Ribbon" (1949),"The Sands of Iwo Jima" (1950),"Cishum" (1970) and "Big Jake" (1971)with John Wayne.Although during part of his life he suffered from alcoholism, he managed to conquer it and later had minor roles in such films as "King Kong" (1976) and "Miracle Mile" (1989). Never a major star, his performances were always enjoyable and I trust that he has joined that great band of actors and entertainers who have passed on this year.

Well, he at least joined John Wayne......Without John Wayne, he would have had virtually no career at all. But that said, I always liked him as part of the "Wayne Ensemble Cast"......Ol' John surrounded himself with friends more than Sinatra!

John Agar, Steve Brodie, Dane Clark... there's a long list of actors who had minor roles in a thousand movies, and an occasional leading role in "B" pictures. Working stiffs, like us folk singers, except for Arlo, Pete, Joan, Bob and people you know just by hearing their first names.

Here's to Working Stiffs!

Jerry (one of 'em)

Don't forget his classic roles in "The Mole People" and "Return of Th Creature".

"Hi, I'm John Agar, the pompous-ass...PILGRIM!"

And who can forget Body Bags, or Zontar, the Thing From Venus?, or The Brain From Planet Arous? What about Flesh and the Spur? or The Daughter Of Dr. Jekyl. We're talking lifetime achievement award here, folks. But, John inspired me to start the Working Stiffs thread, so that makes him a charter member.

One of the worst actors ever to grace the silver screen in my opinion.

No one said he was any good... might have been a nice enough guy, but I don't even know that. He goes in my Pantheon of Steve Brodie, William Shatner, Cameron Mitchell and Ceasar (sp?) Romero as actors who couldn't recite Little Bo Peep and get it right...

Hopefully, he was a better person than an actor.

Jerry
