Subject: Songs in Open D/E tuning From: Angus McSweeney Date: 10 Apr 02 - 01:00 PM Hi all! I've been having a lot of fun lately playing songs from Dylan's "Blood on the Tracks" (New York versions) in open D (sometimes with a capo to make it open E tuning). Anybody got any other tunes they can recommend in this tuning? Chords? |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Songs in Open D/E tuning From: Peter T. Date: 10 Apr 02 - 02:41 PM Well, for chords, I am so perverse that I am doing almost everything in open D -- Rick F. (bless his heart) has helped create all sorts of jazz chordings (the trick seems to be to focus on the Em7, F#m7, Gm7 setup in open D, since that gives you the low bass, and also the bass runs on the fifth string and sixth, and then you can decide on what you want to do on the high strings, with a few changes you can get the maj7, etc.). One that is hard to find is the B7, which is 4th string, first fret, 5th string, second fret, first string, first fret. Also, try barring the fifth fret (G) and using the other fingers as if you were doing a G or an A7 in the open D. Voila, C, and D7. You can do the same thing at A (7th fret, voila D and E7). You can bar up and down the whole guitar in all keys, naturally, and also get the different IVs and V7s. Another good Gm is 5,3,2 strings, all in the first fret. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Songs in Open D/E tuning From: wes.w Date: 11 Apr 02 - 08:44 AM Use the standard tuning 'E major' (022100) chord shape, and slide it up the frets without a barre, so the unfretted strings play the same notes for all positions - instant Joni Mitchell! |

Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Songs in Open D/E tuning From: GUEST,Slickerbill Date: 18 Jun 02 - 12:39 PM To add to wes w's Emajor suggestion, try the E7 slide up as well. Also, if you haven't tried yet, get yourself a slide and try something like "Walkin' Blues" or "Come On in My Kitchen". Lots of slide licks will just roll off the neck with a bit of practice. SB |
Subject: RE: Lyr/Chords Req: Songs in Open D/E tuning From: M.Ted Date: 18 Jun 02 - 12:47 PM The tuning is great for picking out the melody on nearly any kind of dance melody, from reels, jigs, or hornpipes to Balkan kolos, even to bellydance tunes, because you've got built in rhythm and bass support-- |

Tricky if you aren't used to playing fingerstyle slide blues, but with a bit of practice and watching Steve play on Youtube, you'll hae them sounding good in no time Aaron |
