Does anyone know of a musicians session on Friday nights within a few miles of the A1 between Leeds and Stanstead Airport?
Eric the Viking, Skipjack and myself will be traveling to Stanstead to fly to the Euro Gathering on Friday 3rd May and think it would be better to be involved in a session rather than sitting in an airport waiting for an early flight.

Will you be playing "Leaving on a Jet Plane"?
If Hull is on your journey plan you could always visit the Kingston, otherwise you'll have to start a new session in the Stanstead Departure Lounge!

The session in Stansted village is on the last Sunday. You could go a little further south for The White Hart in Moreton near Ongar. Session every Friday night.

Noreen, I'd have to admit that my sense of direction needs attention, but at least I can plead that in my case the road to Hull is paved with bad intentions.Very bad ones!!

Peter, thank you for the Essex end of things. The Moreton session looks like a goer, but we won't be down the road until later on in the evening, probably getting on towards 10pm. I'm an Essex maaan meself, Peter, from the marshes. Which bit do you occupy?

Another one for the thinking about is the Red Lion Hotel at Whittlesford which is just off the M11 near the aircraft museum at Duxford. From there it's a stones throw down the M11 to Stanstead. Good food and beer at the hotel as well as a friendly club. Pick the right night and you could hear part of Shave the Monkey unplugged. Music is mostly English country dance and the song is what ever you fancy doing. Usually 8:15 to 11:15.

A bit further North than Cambridge? Or else we'll be sitting at Stanstead until 04.30(checkin time!! From about 01.00hrs) Oh the wait for Saturday, will be well worth it I know, but;

Doug Porter has a site covering Derby/Notts. I linked to it once but he didn't want a back link and I was not impressed. Can't remember the URL. If I remember correctly, Tom Paxton "carefully examined every corner of the airport for the next fourteen hours or so...."

For Friday night music, it sounds like you would have time to veer off course as far as Hinckley, near Leicester. There is an acoustic session from 8.30pm, open mic from 9.30pm, at the Queen's Head. There's a bit more info at this really useful website. When the page opens, click venues > England > Leicestershire. Or email the guy who runs the website, and you'll get a quick response. (He is usually at the Queen's Head sessions himself.)

If you take up this option, you might be better taking M1 rather than A1 from Leeds. The A14 is of course a fast route to get you back on course after the music, especially at that time of night.

Checked out the site, thanks, had it on my favourites already, but never thought of looking on it-dumb or what! Have even mailed with the Prof (Called Mike-I seem to remember) some long while ago. It's a small world. This looks like a go-er.

Sounds good to me, my multi pointy headed friend. 'Sprobably best if I pick up William first (which would be logical if I can swing working in 'Ull that day) and then swing by your gaff and onto the M1 sarfbarnd. Should get to you by 6pm, and hopefully make the ceilidh session for starter's orders. Hope we can get all the gear in the Fanny-Magnet!

There's also another session in Whittlesford at a pub called the "Bees in the Wall". The Red Lion is more of a trad musicians' session, the Bees is more of a singers' session and "anything goes" style-wise.

Both of them are a bugger to find, BTW - lots of twisty roads!

Red Lion, I can't remember the directions offhand. However, for the Bees in the Wall:-

Turn off at the junction for Duxford. Take the turning for Duxford village (the turning AWAY from the air museum) - if you're driving south then it's a left turn at the roundabout, if you're driving north then it's a right turn. Turn off the roundabout SLOWLY, bcos you need to take the left turn about 50 yards further down the road! Take that left turn, and head down the country lane for about 5 minutes without turning off anywhere (beware the sudden corners!) until you get to a T-junction. Turn right at the T-junction, then right at the next T-junction, and then the Bees in the Wall is the pub on the left. It's about 5-10 minutes from the M11 junction.

If you want to sling me an email ([e-mail], minus the "spam.proof." - call me paranoid! :-) then I can give you further details if you want. Or I can give you references in StreetMap or MultiMap if you want. I can probably also find you directions to the Red Lion if you like.
