Subject: Big Mick's Conklin Ceili Band CD release
From: Big Mick
Date: 13 Apr 02 - 02:48 PM

Hi folks! A little shameless self promotion here. The band, of which I am a founding member, The Conklin Céilí Band, has finally finished our CD. I just received the mastered version back yesterday, and we are off to have it pressed next week. I would say that around the first of May it will be ready for sale. In the interim I thought I would share a little with you about our band, and the CD.

The name of our band is a bit of a misnomer. More correctly we would use InOBU's Sorcha Dorcha designation of "ballad and céilí band". The name comes from a very small village in Michigan and was a joke based on the more famous groups like Kilfenora Céilí Band and Kips Bay Céilí Band.

I am going to start by posting the opening background piece from the liner notes, as well as the "Thanks" section, and then daily I will post the notes from another song or two. When we get the CD's back, I will post purchase info.

Several of you have heard the pre-mastering mixes, and if you have any comments, please feel free to make them.

Mick

The Band:

Jon Koeze (bass guitar, 48 button concertina, jug, backup vocals)

Mick Lane (6 & 12 string guitars, bodhran, lead & backup vocals)

Michael Scott (banjo, lead & backup vocals)

Tom Verlin (mandolin, Irish bouzouki, 6 string guitar, backup vocals)

James Goldsmith (hammered dulcimer, guitar)

Shelley Emelander (hammered dulcimer, guitar)

Guest artist:

Katie Stratton (whistles on "Risin' of the Moon" and backup vocals on "Isle of Hope")

Liner Note

I remember the conversation. Tom Verlin came up to me and said, "Mick, you know how guys go to the woods during deer season, and spend five days together hunting, talking and playing cards?" "Yeah", sez I. "How would you like to do that, except with music?" sez he. "I'm in", sez I. That is how it all started. We got together in an old cabin in the woods on the weekend after New Year's in 1996 to make music. We have been together ever since.

That first weekend there was Tom Verlin on mandolin and guitar, Jon Koeze on guitar, Jim Goldsmith on guitar and fiddle, and myself on 12-string guitar . A few weeks later Mike Scott joined us on banjo and vocals. Our world hasn't been the same since. We have become a band, but even more importantly, we have bonded in a way that speaks of friendship, family, and the love of the music. We have had great times and we have faced adversity, including the loss of one of our own. But the music lives on.

Jim Goldsmith, one of the founding members left us unexpectedly in March of 2001. This band would have never jelled as it did without him. Originally the CD had a different a concept to it, but with Jim's passing we knew it now had more to do with the legacy of his family than anything else. We asked his daughter Michelle (Shelley to us) to step in and help us to complete the CD in her Fathers place. Shelley plays the same instruments as Jim and, bless her heart, she agreed to do it. Shelley and Rick have 4 kids under the age of 7 at home, so this was a major commitment on their part. The CD would not have been possible without them.

This CD is lovingly dedicated to the memory of Jim Goldsmith and his wonderful partner and wife, Darla. They passed away within one year of each other. They both touched our music, and indeed helped to shape it. We are thankful for the time we had with them, and sincerely hope that this collection will serve to keep them alive forever in the hearts of those that loved them.

Special thanks:

The Conklin Céili Band would like to give a special thanks to the following people without whom this CD would not have been possible.

Mr. Norm Byrne of Byrne Electric.   This fine gentleman has been supportive, personally and financially, of this band and his heritage for as long as any of us can remember. Long before the band came into being, Mr. Byrne would offer, without solicitation, to support the annual St. Patrick's Day celebrations and various cultural events that centered on his heritage. He would say that he has been blessed and seeks to share that. We would say that he and Rosemary are a blessing to have among us.

Mr. Dan Milner of New York City, for the use of "Billy O'Shea" and "Sligo Musketeers". Having your support and friendship means more to us than you know. Thanks Dan, for all you do to keep the music alive. We recommend Dan's CD's, "Irish Ballads and Songs of the Sea" and "The Irish in America", as well as the songbook he co-authored titled "A Bonny Bunch of Roses". All are available through Folk Legacy Records at www.folklegacy.com.

Mr. Ed Trickett, for giving us the song by Brian Flynn titled "Along The Famine Road". To have a singer of this caliber teach us this wonderful song is an honor for which we are very grateful. Ed is another singer that the serious student of the folk genre simply must hear. His CD's are also available through Folk Legacy Records at www.folklegacy.com.

Mr. Rick Emelander, for being the type of husband and friend that he is. The band knows that this CD would have been something less without Shelley's participation and that couldn't have happened without you, Rick.

Mr. Andy Mitchell of The Audio Bay Recording Studio. Andy took a personal interest in this project far beyond just recording the tracks. We want to acknowledge his devotion to getting it right. We recommend his services highly.

To all our fans, thanks for your patience and your loyal support. You are what this band is really all about. We hope you enjoy listening to our music, and where we have taken it so far. And we look forward to introducing you to more of this wonderful music in the future.

And finally, to Katherine Jorgensen Koeze, Mary Lou Rinke-Lane, Leona Scott and Debbie Verlin. This band and this CD are as much a testament to your dedication as it is to ours. Thanks you for your loving encouragement and sacrifice. We hope you take as much satisfaction in it as we do.

All the best of course and I am as anxious as anyone to hear it...........But more, I had thought about Jim and knew Shelley was doing it now and wondered how you would handle it. Not surprisingly, you did it well and in the only way it could rightly be done. A beautiful expression of your feelings and I expect it will be a beautiful testament to Jim and Darla. Bless you Bro.....Ya' done good.

Parting Glass/Over The Waterfall/"There". The day that Jim left us, Mick and Mike went over to his house to sing and just spend some time with him. As they were leaving, Jim let us know in his own way that he wanted one more song. That song was "The Parting Glass". We will never sing it again without our beloved friend in mind. We had an old take of Jim playing "Over the Waterfall". The association is obvious.

Tom's mother, who is Jim's Aunt Eileen Verlin, is the matriarch of a wonderful family. Jim loved his Aunt Eileen dearly, as we all do. There is a tradition in their family. When someone is in need of prayers and Mother Verlin calls for the Rosary, all will be there. As the last prayer is said, all sit quietly and reflect until Mother Verlin simply says "There". It implies so much, about love and faith, about caring and giving, about finishing and "see you next week", or at the next need, about the love of friends and family. So we end the CD by having Aunt Eileen say to our dear friends, Jim and Darla, ….. "There"…..

But I am closing in on the basic performance competency mark, so it won't be long before I will be using it onstage and in the studio. The first official release party will be at Pete Brown's Office in May sometime. You will be right at the top of the list.

"The Conklin Ceili Band" - it sounds like a Percy French song already. Sort of more musical variant on Slattery's Mounted Foot.

I can't believe it, but it is true!! There really is a CD and we got it back yesterday. The graphics and layout were the problem, that and the schedule of the folks doing it, but it is done, it is pressed and we have them in our hands. I must say that I am pleased with the end result.

I will post the details on how to order it here as soon as I have them, including price and shipping. This should be by the end of the week.

It has been a long wait, and I hope it will have been worth it.

I think you will love the cover photo. The year before he passed, Jim (along with Mike Scott of our band)took a trip to Ireland. They stayed at an inn on the shores of a lough (not sure which one). The picture was taken as Jim was walking on the shore one morning. It is a stunning picture. One of the relatives at Darla's funeral showed it to me and asked me what I thought. It was obvious, and I said "It looks like the cover of the CD to me". Ironically, Jim (who had never been to Ireland before) said to Mike "Now I can die".

The back cover is a photo of the first gig we played after Jim passed.

Memories...............I miss the old man. Cranky, old bastard.........I do miss him.

Mick

Sorry I've been out of pocket and missed this conversation earlier (much happening in Dallas) ... but I've had the pleasure of listening to this CD prior to its release (Mick gave me a copy of the master a couple of weekd back). It is a fine CD with a great colection of songs. You will find it is quite enjoyable and listenable and I suspect you'll pick up a few new songs to boot! I was surprised to hear there are two quite distinct voices among the lead vocals; I usually think of Mick as the main man. Both Mick and his bandmate (sorry I forget his name) sing well and provide quality to the stories their songs tell. There are real gems in the mix; new songs or ones I've not heard before ... and a few old favorites. Great Job Mick, please pass on my congrats to the boys, and best of luck with the sales.

Thanks, Jed! Compliments like this coming from one who has such high standards and talent are high praise indeed. We are honored by them.

The other singer is Michael Scott. It is a pleasure to be in a band with a singer of this caliber. He brings a different sensibility to our song selection, which I think makes us a much more diverse and enjoyable band. Some of the songs that he brings, I never would have. And we are better for that. An example would be Isle of Hope. This is not the type of song that I would normally be attracted to, yet by his bringing it and all of us embracing it, it has become one of the best we do in live performance, as well as on the CD. He sings on Ballad of St. Anne's Reel, Old Dungarven Oak, John Williams and others.

Two of my favorites on this CD were the ones that have never been recorded before and came to us as a direct result of The Mudcat Cafe. One of them, The Sligo Musketeers, came to us from Dan Milner AKA Liam's Brother. He found it in an old 19th century songster, added a chorus and a tune, and originally was considering it for his "The Irish in America" CD. He ran out of room, and very graciously offered the song to me for use on ours. The way it came out is a joy to listen to. The instrumentation is spare...........a 22" bodhran, an Irish Bouzouki, and a jug.......but just right. I simply love that song. The other of my favorites came to me from my first FSGW Getaway. Mudcatters Kath Westra, Jeri Corlew and myself, at the Saturday night concert did a Brendan Nolan song called "Far From Their Home". In the audience sitting with our beloved Sandy and Caroline Paton was Ed Trickett of Bok, Muir and Trickett. He asked me where I got the song and I told him. He took me outside and taught me a song he had been carrying around for a while called "Along The Famine Road". It was written by and acquaintance of his by the name of Brian Flynn. Ed told me he was looking for someone to give it to and wondered what I thought. It is a beautiful song, stark yet full of hope. That is just how I recorded it. To be the first to record songs given to me by collectors/singers/performers of this caliber.....and to be able to call them my friends......is almost beyond my ability to comprehend. I so hope that you all will enjoy this CD, and these two songs especially. There is so much emotion involved in it, from Jim and Darla's death, Shelley's joining us, the receiving of these songs, that I am holding by breath to see how it is received.

Mick

Like Jed said, a good mix of tunes and a lot of energy. "Along the Famine Road" and "Sligo Musketeers" are two of my favorites on the CD. (Yes, I got a sneak preview too.)

Mick, it's scary enough knowing you do the driving-while-talking-on-cell-phone thing. Now I've got to worry about you speeding down the highway typing into a satellite-linked laptop plugged into the cigarette lighter? Sheesh! Log off and drive, man!

OK, my friends, here is what we are going to do. Any of you that desire to purchase one, here is what we will do. We are still working out some details on the website, but for now, send me an email at mlane@accn.org with your snail mail details. I will get the packaging ready. Then follow with a check or money order for $15.00 + $2.00 S&H for the States, $3.00 in Canada. All prices are US dollars. There is a currency calculator HERE. I will ship it standard airmail, unless you tell me otherwise for which there would be additional cost.

My European friends, we are working out a plan with Bill Sables to get some to you. If you don't want to wait and you wish me to ship one to you, drop me a line and I will calculate the shipping costs and get it right out.

I am so excited that you recorded Steve Earle's "Dixieland". Paddymac will tell you I beg to hear this song whenever Mike Powelson is around and now I have it on your CD!!!

The musicianship is superb and the mix of songs is a delight! Honestly, folks, everyone knows I would be the first to criticize Mick but the only thing wrong with this CD is there aren't enough photographs! We are even treated to Mick's lyrical liner notes! Well done, mate! hg

Well Mick, I liked it just fine. The absolute least I could say is this. This recording was done by a group who obviously loved and respected the music that was performed. I really liked the hammered dulcimer on The Ballad of St Anne's Reel. ( The same song is done far better on my bands CD "Finally" found at WWW.theflyingcolumn.com but that is only opinion). For me the high light of this recording happened last September when we sat in the practice room at Elderly instruments and you sang "Famine Road" to me on my soon to be new guitar. And I played "Photographs" for you, a song that was to be on our CD.

I have given the CD to my friend Bob Welch to play on his Irish Radio Show this coming Sunday. Bob gives it high marks as well.

Seriously, folks, you really should look into Don's CD with The Flying Column. Great music from a venerable bunch of musicians. And don't tell Meixner, but I am going to lift "Photographs" from him.

Thanks a million, Don! Is Bob's show on the internet? If it is, could you let me know the details? If not, could you record it for me?

You're absolutely right about the Sligo Musketeers, Mick. You have added your fabulous spirit to ALL of these songs, and I love that MY kids are hearing and enjoying these songs and stories. Well do I remember dancing to the Clancy Brothers with my sisters when we were little, and it tickles me to see my little one do a jig around the kitchen.

An amazing thing happened here. Big Mick and the band were playing out in the garden (from the boom-box in the shed) and all of a sudden several hundred sparrows swooped down from the sky, swarmed all over Heather (who was weeding her rocks) sunk their little claws into her and spirited her up into the clouds. As I ran to the spot where she was last seen, I noticed her little Duckboots were still there, but now, as empty as George Steinbrenner's heart.

Suddenly two squirrels sprang to the ground from a tree and started doing a Sligo Jig! And then....the earth opened up and a Leprechaun appeared. I knelt down, ready to receive my three wishes, when the little fucker spit tobacco juice in my eye and said "Big Mick for next Pope....pass it on!"

Ahh what a strange and glorious day. Eventually the sparrows returned Heather to terra firma (she survived the three hundred foot drop, but landed on the cats, instantly killing them both) the leprechaun disappeared, the squirrels ceased Jigging and went back to doing the Pony and I replaced Big Mick's album with Seamus Kennedy's newest release "Danny Boy Goes Disco".

Thanks for the good music big fella!

Cheers

Rick

Sorry - 100% thread creep below.

Rick, sounds like you have the Sergio Leone type of leprechaun up there. Was his pot of gold more like a fistful? Was he a Leprechaun With No Name? Did he carry around a little wind-up music box that played Si Beag Si Mhor, and when the music ran down would whip out his shilelagh (or however you spell it) and beat the living crap out of the nearest person?

I don't believe for one minute that Heather squashed the cats when she landed.

Harpgirl, "Forty Two Lawyers on the Letterhead" is either a song title or a great band name.

Re: Conklin Ceili Band release, Over the WaterFall

As you are well aware, the mission of Lane Fielding Patterson and Swan, Layabouts for Hire is to do nothing for others too busy to sit around in their underwear drinking beer and swatting flies. Your effort at Over the Waterfall, sir, flies in the face of all that is lazy. The obvious dedication, effort and musicianship displayed on this CD are an outrage to any shiftless man. The layout, art, and liner notes speak of thoughtfulness, research, and attention to detail which cannot be achieved when drooling in a semi-recumbent position. Worst is the music itself, which does not allow one to continue to wear a furrow into a couch, but compels the listener to sing, dance, or grab an instrument.

I urge you to return to your slothful duties without delay, lest you threaten a going concern which, at its heart, does nothing. Remember, at LFPS, it's the least we can do.

Nice work, pal.

Finally! I told Mick everything in the Rocky Mountain West has to go through Denver, first, then Mule Train to go over the Great Divide!

I had heard snippets of our Big Mick in the old HearMe sessions and on Mudcat Radio and, once, on the telephone when he called to tell me about Catspaw being ill (the first time, really scary, but Mick's voice was just perfect for imparting such news and soothing) so I had some idea that I would love hearing whole bits by him, but this goes above and beyond what I'd expected!

Haven't quit listening to it since I got it a couple of days, ago. It feels like I've been having a Ceili in my house for days! The arrangements are first rate, great subtle syncopations between the instruments and that grand, salt of the earth voice of Mick's! Great variety, too! The tributes to Jim and Darla, plus the inclusion of earlier recordings of Jim are true artistry...just what I'd expect from the wonderful loving person I've come to know as Mickdarlin'.

The music has melted my heart, had me up dancing, whooping, beating my drum, singing along, and crying and when I heard that matriarchal "THERE" I laughed out loud for the joy of it!

Anyone who doesn't buy this is a damn fool and should be gobsmacked!**BG**

And I am flat out juiced to meet my old friend, never met, Seamus. That is one of the wonderful things about the internet in general, and The Mudcat specifically. You come to know people in a very special way, often even though you have never met them "3D".

I am so please that folks are enjoying our efforts. As is always the case, we feel that we can do better, and wait till you hear the next one................LOL.

One piece of advice I would give to anyone is to get a good producer, especially in the beginning stages. Having had the great good fortune to be a part of both Rick Fielding and Jed Marums next efforts, I have now been in the studio with one of the finest pro's in the business, Paul Mills. Having watched and worked with him a bit, I now see why this is critical. If you are considering a CD, I will offer this bit of advice to anyone interested in listening.

First, spend a great deal of time in planning. Pick many songs and give them an arrangement that approximates the sound you are after. Choose more music than you will record.

Second, get the arrangements down the way you hear them. It is your interpretation. Be bold and do what sounds good to you.

Third, hook up with someone to produce it. I believe it is best to use a pro. This could be someone that is a pro producer, or another musician whose ear and judgement you trust. Generally, I think, this should be someone without any interest other than the ability to understand what you are trying to achieve, and the committment to keep you focused until you get it right. This person should have the type of personality that makes you comfortable.

Get your producer a reference copy of what you have come up with in advance so they can ask you the hard questions. My favorite question that Paul asked when confronted with a song that had been done many times before was "Great song, what can you bring to it that is fresh and not been done before?"

Once you settle on the set, practice, practice, practice! The studio is a place for inspiration, improv, but not practice.

Yep............it was a great experience doing this one. I hope all of you that have it enjoy it, and I hope that others of you will pick one up and enjoy it as well. And I can't wait to start the next one.

Seamus..........see you tomorrow in Muskegon.

All the best,

Mick

WOW! To say I am thrilled is an understatement. The following is a review of our CD by the new music music reviewer for The Grand Rapids Press. I didn't even know they were doing this. Guess I owe this guy a jar of Guinness.

Grand Rapids Press, Wednesday, September 18, 2002

CONKLIN CEILI PLAYS IT TO THE HILT WITH HEART

The first strack on this CD perfectly sums up this outfit's rich Celtic catalogue: an a cappella Irish drinking song that leads into a wondrous instrumental, showing off this beloved local group's guitar, hammered dulcimer, mandolin, bass and banjo work.

Fortunately, for those fond of this acoustic folk music, there are 16 more tracks on "Over The Waterfall", telling tale after tale in the classic Celtic tradition of telling tales, from "Ballad of St. Anne's Reel" to "The Sligo Musketeers" to "The Ferryman".

Band members _ Mick Lane, Jon Koeze, Tom Verlin and Michael Scott, with performances on hammered dulcimer and guitar by founding member Jim Goldsmith and his daughter, Shelley Emelander - clearly play and sing like they adore playing and singing this stuff. That's really the only way to pull it off, especially when performing "Parting Glass", "Along The Famine Road", and other sentimental selections. The band will perform songs from the album at a CD-release party at Pete Brown's Office, 1535 Plainfield Ave. NE. The album, dedicated to the memory of the late Goldsmith and his wife, Darla, captures the spirit of the Conklin Ceili Band's live performances, making it all feel like you're sitting in an intimate pub with a cold one, shedding a tear and sharing a chuckle. And that's a fine place to be.

Three stars -- John Sinkevics

I too was hoping for another CD from "little" Mick. I've had his first one since the time we shared an interesting drive together from Maryland to Michigan back in 2004. He promised me that there would be lots of original songs on the next one. Hey Mick, what was the name of that little town in Pennsylvania where we met the nice lady at the post office who "slipped down the hill and fell in love?"

Mike

I just got a PM from a 'Catter who wanted a copy of this CD, and we just reordered another run. Plus, we are just beginning work on our next one, so it will be a busy few months. It is looking like we will be working with Paul Mills on this one, which we consider an honor and an obligation. When a man of this stature agrees to work with you, to put his name on your work, it means you will have to be at the top of your game. Looks like we will start after the first of the year, so we have much to do.

If anyone is in Grand Rapids, Michigan or precincts, we will be performing in an intimate concert setting this coming Saturday, October 18, at Wealthy Theater. It is going to be a smashing good time.

I still love this first CD, and my grandkids still start dancing around every time they hear it. We were playing a gig a month ago, and when we did "The Old Dungarven Oak" one of our members granddaughter came onstage and sang it with us. The wheel keeps turning...........

All the best,

Mick

Mick, my grandson, Morgan, is consistent. When he comes over, we usually put on some "tunes." He'll listen to others, but he almost always requests "Billy O'Shea." After all these years, he still absolutely loves your CD; 'course he's heard it since he was a baby in 2004.:-)

You other folks, if you haven't heard Big Mick and the Conklin Ceili Band, you owe it to yourselves to give a listen.

Thanks for the tunes, Mick and CCB!

Thanks for the kind words, Kat. I can hardly imagine what the young man looks like these days. He was just a little guy then. PM me with his mailing address and I will send him a copy of the Paul Mills produced cd titled "The Cannonsburg Sessions". It is a wonderful collection. The thanks for Billy O'Shea goes to Dan Milner via The Mudcat. He gave us that one as well as The Sligo Musketeers. He gave the latter to Frank Harte at the same time but we beat him to the press. ***chuckle***

Mick, that is so sweet of you. Thank you. That will be a huge and welcome surprise for him. When I think of it, that kid has grown up hearing about "Mama's" Mudcat friends all of his life. Maybe someday there will be a case study done of the Mudcat's influence on young minds.**bg**

He wanted to know where Billy O'Shea came from, so we looked up the origins thread for it and I wasn't surprised to see Dan Milner's name. That's so neat...the Sligo Musketeers, too.

Thanks, again,

luvyakat

On the off chance someone here hasn't already linked to this nearly hour-long performance from the band:
