Subject: saltcoats at the fair From: Tam the bam fraeSaltcoatsScotland Date: 14 Apr 02 - 01:16 PM This song was written by and sung by Billy Connolly. It's about the the two weeks in July when the people of Glasgow came to my home town of Saltcoats for a holiday. It's on the west coast of Scotland. So if anyone has the words to this song I would be really gratefull. Tom |

Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Saltcoats at the Fair (Billy Connolly) From: GUEST Date: 27 Jul 20 - 05:43 AM similar idea & same tune as Matt McGinn's 'Portobello'- who was first? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Saltcoats at the Fair (Billy Connolly) From: GUEST Date: 30 Jul 20 - 05:22 AM no theories? |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Saltcoats at the Fair (Billy Connolly) From: cnd Date: 30 Jul 20 - 09:28 AM I haven't listened to the songs side-by-side yet but Portobello was released first in 1971 (source), while Saltcoats came out in 1975 (source). That suggests McGinn was first, but maybe he just recorded first? Or maybe they share a similar origin. |
Subject: RE: Lyr Req: Saltcoats at the Fair (Billy Connolly) From: GUEST,GuestTF Date: 31 Jul 20 - 08:45 AM I suspect Saltcoats came first. Matt used to appear regularly at a hotel in Portobello (just outside Edinburgh) and it's likely he adapted the West coast version for some local flavour. |
