I just found out tonite that I need to start my walking back again. I used to walk around 3 miles a day, but since I've been sick I haven't been able to walk as far. The medicines that I am on have just took my energy away. I want to make it to see 53. Does anyone else out there walk also? Bob

When I am able, I always feel better for walking. When I am not able, I try to do some simple exercises and still feel better. Because of a health challenge, I have a difficult time walking outside in up and down weather and I cannot stand the air in the malls. I am thinking of getting a treadmill, again, which I did enjoy last time I had one.

Good luck to you. I had a friend who had problems with meds and who had been a long distance walker before. She started back only able to go half of a block. Within a year she'd worked back up to her usual 5-10 miles per day. Just take it slow and easy, Bob, and I'll bet you can do the same.

Good luck,

kat

Bob,

Doc told me I had to walk too...how do you do it when the meds and your condition take all of your energy? That's where I am...it's hard to drag myself out there.

Let us know how you're doing!

Hi Bob I do brisk walking 2 or 3 times a week managed to loose 2 stone over a year and felt a lot better mentally and physically. At this time of the year here in Manchester England it a pure joy to see spring happening all around, and walking is particularly rewarding. Though Manchester is a big urban centre you are never very far from "country side" and here on the west side we have Chat moss (the nearest thing to wilderness your going to get close to a city). In winter of course when the weather is bad I get out less often but I make up for it in summer by walking further and more regularly. Even in summer I sometimes don't feel like making the effort so I don't. I think the trick is to take it steady and ENJOY. On Sundays I do a 10 mile or so (brisk at the start and not so brisk at the end) walk, stopping for lunch at one of the meny "garden centres" or pubs with frequent stops for a pot of tea (aarr heaven). Good luck, I'm shore you'll soon feel the positive effects. All the best PP

Do you have someone to walk with you? Another persons company could be helpful to encourage you to go further without it feeling like a chore.

My doctor told me that I should either walk or ride a bicycle. Since I spend most of my day at work on my feet walking was not an option for me. I chose the bicycle route. When I first started riding a year ago February I could hardly make it around the block, I was so out of shape! I now have no problems with riding for as long or far as I want. Yesterday I rode a 10.5 mile ride in just under an hour and could have done more if I had time. Maybe ask your Dr. if riding a bicycle could replace walking, it worked for me!

I retired from work on the grounds of ill health but needed to get daily exercise. As I never really enjoyed walking by myself I got a dog from the local rescue centre.
Now I've got 2 dogs and walk 2 - 3 mile a day ...... I've made a lot of new friends as well.
I've recently discovered aquafit and now do an hour a week of exercises in water ....... very enjoyable .......much nicer than getting all hot and sweaty at the gym and great for people like me with back problems.

I have to agree with C-flat, another person to accompany you and provide encouragement can make the walk so much more pleasurable. I often walk with music in a portable CD player or cassette player when I'm alone. I've found walking to be a great stress reliever and getting better fit makes it worthwhile. I've got to run, I mean walk, this thread is giving me the nod to get out there and walk.

P.S. When not walking, I alternate with bicycling, all the same benefits although I leave the music at home. Got to watch and listen for traffic.

Ellen

I alternate walking with stopping at a pub. It gives me something to aim for.
Of course if I'm up in Mid-Wales the next pub may be ten miles or more. Then it's an incentive!

Living in the city (especially one where traffic is as horrible as it is in Boston) you find it is much quicker sometimes to walk to your destination than to drive or take public transportation, once you factor in all the waiting for parking or for the bus to arrive, etc.

I find if I decide to walk either to or from work, or some other destination, I don't need to worry about whether I got my exercise for the day. Always wear comfortable shoes you can walk a couple miles in painlessly; so in case you decide to take off walking, your high heels or tight loafers won't prevent you!

Even if you don't have time to take one long walk, you can still benefit from walking shorter distances more frequently...three twenty minutes walks during the day makes an hour, which is about three miles for most people!

It's also good to take the stairs (or walk up the escalator) as often as you can.

I have noticed that my friends who have moved away from the city to the suburbs or more rural towns, where they rely on driving to do all their errands, put weight on rapidly. And unfortunately a lot of suburbs these days don't even have sidewalks to walk on! And walking from strip mall to strip mall is not very appealing. I could never live in a community like that.

Well, for me, walking to my mailbox is a two mile round-trip down and up a mountain. Afetr a long day, I have to resist the urge to just drive down there...but I always feel better afterwards. You'll start to feel it too, Bob.

Do you live in town with an animal shelter close by? Call them up and offer to walk dogs for them. You get your exercise with some friendly company, and the dogs get a chance to get out, get more socialization, and get more exposure to possible adoptors than they would just sitting in their cages.

Yes Bob - I find walking very beneficial.

Last year access to paths in UK was restricted because of Foot and Mouth Disease and I did little or no walking.

By the end of the year I felt so lethargic.

No I can walk again I feel much much better physicallly and psychologically.

Cycling is also excellent excercise - gentle if you need -and easier on the feet !! Good Luck

It's a good 45 min walk from here to my favorite pub... this summer, I've been thinking of starting at least that... I miss walking at night... I just wish I didn't have to do it through downtown Windsor....

How about starting a "virtual companionship" walking group? We could go for a walk each, possibly indulging in a Hum or even a pint on the way, then post what we saw/sang/drank for others to enjoy/scoff/compare/use as a target/incentive. I know I too am one of the depressive/lazy/need-to-do-it-but-never-quite-get-started tendency! Let me know what you think. We might even manage to combine music and BS in one strand!

"Does anybody out there walk also?"

Of course! All the cool thoughtful people do!

I'm sure you are feeling like your wings are clipped, but you can build them up again. Good luck! I work 1-4 walks into my day, and I did better once I got over trying to do One Big Walk. Little bittie ones are a big help too, and they can get longer as you go.

When we were having dog problems in the neighborhood I resorted to just walking in the yard circling the house, increasing 'laps' as I got stronger.

A shopping plaza or mall a good place to drive to and walk a short ways in and back out--there'll be people around in case you start feeling dicey. Even circling around in big stores you like is a way to get some steps in.

We're walking with you in spirit!

Hi Bob, good thread.I used to walk everywere but recently I have turned into a fat git! (I recently had to buy some bigger trousers as none of my old ones would fit), I reckon this is a combination of drinking too much, eating the wrong foods andgetting no exercise, I reckon I have gained a stone this year already. You have motivated me to get a bit fitter and healthier, I am 33, but the way I am treating mybody i think I will be lucky to see 53! Good luck with your exercise plan, have you thought about buying a little dog? I seem to remember you saying you had blood pressure problems, if so then too much exercise could be bad for you, (you should build it up gradually) check with your doctor before starting any tough exercise programme just to make sure.Good luck.john

I was walking 3-4 miles per day on a treadmill and felt great...but stopped. The weight is creeping back on but even more noticeable is the change in my skin. I think I was drinking a lot more water when I was walking and the increased blood flow just made me look rosier. Thanks for the nudge 53. Maybe tomorrow...

It is amazing how much walking you can get in if you simply walk to do your basic errands, or, if practical, to and from work. Walk to the pub; walk to the shops (you can easily carry 20 pounds of groceries in a backpack and that makes your workout even better!); walk to the post office, the dry cleaners, the hardware store, the dentist. You may even save time by not getting stuck in traffic!

And think of how you are benefitting your health...just be careful of cars when you are a pedestrian!

I started a diet (unintentionally) around New Year's because I was tired of being stuffed all the time! I really just wanted to cut down on how much I ate, not really start a diet. But I started to lose a pound or two just watching how much I ate. I've walked as part of diets in the past and we have a treadmill so I started. I worked my way up to walking 2 to 3 miles almost daily and lost 22 1/2 pounds so far. I still have a way to go but I'm going in the right direction.

Also, we just went to Disney World and with all of the walking I've been doing, I didn't get tired at all! We had a blast!

So, walk if you can! You'll feel better for it!

Frank

Good luck with your walking 53, it's a hugely rewarding both physically and mentally. I am a cyclist, a walker and a (rather slow) runner and thoroughly enjoy my 'green' modes of transportation.

Just take it easy with the medication; have you spoken to your doc about the effects the medication is having?

My very best wishes to you.

John

Robin; exercising regularly will give you MORE energy! Once your body is aware of this, you will start to crave the exercise to offset the tiredness. The hardest part is getting started if you have been sedentary. Try fitting in some walking earlier in the day if possible (before work, at lunch, instead of a fifteen minute coffee break). You will gradually start to need to exercise more and will naturally feel drawn to do it.

pattyClink,
Thanks, I feel good even though I have a long way to go! And don't get discouraged, EVERY walk counts! Start small but stay consistant and then when the small walks stop challenging you, add a little at a time.

Robin,

The best way around being too tired to walk at the end of the day is to walk at the beginning. When I get tired of walking, I set my alarm a little earlier, get a mile or two in before my shower. Believe it or not, starting the day with the exercise actually increases the energy I have at work....I guess because the walk and shower before work revitalizes me. Try the mornings, it's a great way to start!!

Frank

P.S. My dad used to say, never take diet advice from a fat guy! So if you don't take this advice, I understand, but in a few months..... *BG*

Like Robin I wondered about being able to ride my bike after I got home from work! Originaly I was riding just three days a week and just recently increased that to daily. Doctor says I can increase the weight loss and overcome some of the daily fatique by riding more. I have taken the bike out all but two evenings this month and at the beginning I would come home and almost dread having to drag myself up out of my chair to go. Now like Peg said, I look forward to it! I find it has also changed my sleeping habits. Where I used to get up two or three times a night I now sleep soundly through the night (most nights) and wake up feeling a lot better in the morning. Also I have felt a lot less stressful. When I climb on the bike all the cares of the day seem to fall behind me and I just enjoy the ride. There's SO much to be said for excercise, I wish I had found out about it sooner!

Bob,

Cool thread! My day job keeps me on my feet for four hours, moving about, pushing, carrying, sometimes climbing ladders...busy, busy, busy...but nothing replaces a good stiff walk outside. My real job (teaching all manner of folks how to play guitar) keeps me on my ass unfortunately. I like to get out several times a week, daily is best for me, for a few miles with my loyal dog Rosie. I live in a small town so I can see much of the burg or tramp the river or the beach. Three seasons I can ride my bike too, and Rosie will keep up with me.

Thanks for talking about something healthy and positive.

Peace, Mooh.

I've cracked it! I take the car! No, no, let me explain.

I live on a steep hill. At the top of the hill is a beautiful park - fields, lakes, trees - the obvious place to go for a walk. But first I have to get up that hill. Temporary solution - drive the car round to the other side and take a walk from there. I don't mind the hills IN the park. Today was a brisk half-hour. Pollution-conscious members note it is just temporary, til I get going a bit better.

Thank you all, especially Frank and Robin, for getting me started. Please, please help me to keep going!

Wyrd Sister,

How wonderful to have the kind of place to walk you discribed!

Well, I went and joined the zoo! (no comment about if I belonged there or not LOL) A nice medium sized zoo, with LOTS of hilly paths, and lots of places to stop and rest, and look at the local inhabitants.

(thread creep here)Speaking of inhabitants, we are still cleaning out the garage...as we pulled out a couch to throw away, out comes a mama possom, hissing and spitting! Hubby and I retreated to the porch, but she just wouldn't leave. Had her babies clinging to her back.

Well, we go back down to remove the couch, and find two more little babies stuck inside. I put on my gloves, and move the little buggers closer to a very irate mama, then beat a tactical retreat. She gathers them up, and ambles on down the road, family intact.

Happy ending for everyone! Keep plugging!

Robin

Went on my walk this morning and I had to cut it short because of fatigue. I don't know whats causing this, but it makes me mad as hell. Bob

Another half-hour. Little but (I hope) often...

Birdsong, trees coming into leaf, bell-ringing practice in the distance...it felt like the introduction to some particularly cheesy British wartime film. I was expecting to meet David Niven round the next corner! Peaceful tho.

Bob, I don't know your medical problems, but I'd like to add my good wishes to everyone else's, and to thank you for starting this thread. It has given me the nudge to appreciate what I can do, and not take good fortune for granted.

Keep going all!

Thanks Bob! Are you feeling any better?

How is it going with everyone?

:( I haven't been walking, but I will tomorrow, who's walking with me?

Robin

Staying with it here, discovered the blood pressure is down 20 points due to about a years worth of walking 1-3 times a day, 20 minutes at a stretch.

Transitioning into light jogging or circuit training sessions now, to get the heart rate up into 'the zone' and get some weight off.

And have smelled lots of pine, saw lots of flowers, noticed lots of chipmunks, etc. along the way.

It's all good, whatever you can do. Press on!

Right, I did it, and as a penance for missing a few days I walked UP THE HILL. Bluebells just coming into flower...

Would you rather ride a bike than walk? Glenda rides her bike along beside me when I'm walking, than she usually takes off and leaves me in the dirt. Bob

I can't ride a bike! So now I don't - and don't anyone try to persuade me on this one!

Bob,

I'll stick to walking, thank you!

Just got back from my mile walk, NOT UPHILL thank god. I don't think I'm ready for that!

A beautiful day here, sunny and 68 degrees. Can't get much better in KY

Robin

Robin2, keep in mind that if you walk UPHILL first, inevitably there will be a DOWNHILL at the end! After a period of time it will all become easy! Congratulations to ALL who have taken up some form of walking, jogging, hiking or biking becaus eof this thread and thanks to Bob (53) for starting it. I keep logs of my bike rides and in April I missed only three days and rode 200.6 miles!!! I am plumb proud of myself and the Dr is tickled with my results....What gets me though is each time I see her she bubbles alll over about how she 'is pleased that I am taking an active interest in my health care with the excercise and diet'....????....Why the hell wouldn't I? After all it's MY health we're discussing. I guess I'm just amazed that she is amazed!

Just returned from a 16.4 mile ride!!! It took a little over an hour and a half. Started out to be a short ride because I had other things to do, but it was such a nice morning and one thing led to another!! Sure makes me chuckle when I think that a little over a year ago I couldn't even drag myself around the block, never mind ride a mile!

For those among us contemplating starting some sort of excercise discipline, I stongly encourage you. The feeling of satisfaction you get is of itself very rewarding!

Like I said earlier I would rather walk than ride a bike cause when I walk I seem to pay attention to things along the way, and if I ride a bike I don't. Bob

Really had a good walk today and I even made 2 extra trips today so maybe this will be a good sign of things yet to come. I just had to share my good news with all you walkers out there. Bob

Well done and keep at it - every time you post you galvanise (shame?) me into action again. But remember too not to be too hard on yourself if you have a day when you do a little less sometimes.

Bob,

SOOO glad to hear you're feeling good, and moving good! I did my walk, thought about you guys....rainy wet, and old Arther (sp?)made the walk pretty stiff and sore for me. *sigh*

Keep moving all....Wyrd Sister, let's take a cyber walk together, how about it?

Robin
