This is a problem that has exercised my mind while waiting for the assemblage to tune up (I have already achieved perfect pitch).

My take was to cut a hardboard or plywood round to cover the skinand maybe some form of foam edging to keep it in the safe zone and cushion the edges. It would fit inside the case and stuff underwear &/or jumpers in the void to pad the open end. The frame would be strong enough for most purposes but a circumferencial foam strip might add protection and keep the whole thing taut.

I took the bar out of one and put the smaller on inside and carried the lot as hand luggage. If you don't have any other hand luggage you might get away with it. There is room in there for emergency underwear, first aid, camera, sweets. It all depends on size and regs.

A plasic bag in the hold luggage should be ok - especially if you're planning a trip to Ireland to play it in a session in Clare.

If you have a bodhran, I think you should take it with you as carry-on luggage. It would probably make a good flotation device in case of a water landing.

Like Alison suggested above, I put mine (inside padded black fabric case) inside our hold baggage, the bodhran itself well stuffed with all my undies, and surrounded by swimming towels and other cushioning items. In this day and age of high baggage charges per item, it makes sense to only have one check-in hold bag!
The other thing is that if they ask you to open a hand-held bag and then find an animal skin in it, you might not get into certain countries!

I have just stumbled onto this old thread. If anyone still reads them then I can certainly recommend my bodhran case.

I wanted something more durable and offering protection to my beautiful new bodhran. I bought a case from a manufacturer of drum cases, 'Hardcase', which is a drumcase for a sidedrum. The company do a case for bodhrans but it was more expensive and the only difference between that and the one I bought was a little clip for your tipper in the lid. As I have a collection of tippers one holder didn't seem of any interest. I play in a band and as we throw equipment into the back of our car when going to gigs I wanted a really durable hard case and I have been really pleased with the one I bought. It is made from very hard ridged plastic and fastens with 3 rucksack style clips. It had a lifetime guarantee! It cost £42.00 which was double the price of a nylon bag but I think it is worth twice the price to give your bodhran good protection when travelling.

I had a hard shell case made for my bodhran - a 16" floor tom case cut down. My local music shop ordered it for me. I glued in a half-inch of foam rubber, and the bodhran fits snugly. It cost about $20 American, and it fits in the overhead bin in most aircraft, and if it doesn't, it can be checked safely.The case is an Enduro, made by the Humes and Berg company. I've had it quite a few years now, with no damage to the drum.

Wow.....thanks everyone....there are some really great ideas for me to think about........and some not so great ideas.....but highly amusing never the less lol!!! I can get a wooden case made pretty cheap as it is a very good friend who is a wood worker....so i think that might be my first port of call....but the cymbol case idea is good aswell.

yea if you can get them spinning like a frisbee they really fly.
If you had two pieces of ply/hard wood just a little bigger than the 'hran and kept 'em in place in a soft case the essentials will be safe. If you make them a tight fit in the soft case and pack clothes in the right places you get extra luggage space and you can smell like leather - kinky!

I was going to suggest a paper bag, but on second thoughts, it would probably be best in a thin transparent bag so that the handlers could see what it was !

I suppose the above could be a little unfair - perhaps it should have a liitle bit of padding - so that it doesn't damage anyone else's luggage.

As one whose has flown on several occasions with the "Bodhran of Death", (actually a 26 inch shaman drum, tuned with beads and ropes, and played with a series of kettle drum mallet headed tippers made by a friend of mine) the soft sided cases are not so bad; with the following provisions:

1. A good case can be made in America by any of a number of (gasp!) autoharp case makers who specialize in padded soft-side cases. Mine was done by Autumn Wind cases in Hillsville VA [phone], [[e-mail]] for $140.

2. For flights I simply insert the top portion of a RubberMaid trash can lid (cut to fit) into the case on the side of the hide.

3. With the drum detuned (a simple matter of moving the beads inboard) I then fill the interior of the drum with socks and underwear, and place a towel or some undershirts between the trash can lid and the hide surface.

4. It's light, servicable, provides extra space for clothing, practically bullet proof, and I've used baggage every time.

5. If you are from one of those poor European countries, simply get two rubber trash can lids, pad the drum inside, and then duct tape the hell out of it. I've done it several times.

6. Tip: If you're larger than a C cup, do not put an underwire bra in the case, as the customs boys will surely want you to to cut it open after they Xray it... but then it would be a Brahran...

I think alison's idea makes a lot of sense. Stick it in a solid suitcase and stuff it with clothes.

It's not just bodhran players, bert - the case I've got for my guitar cost a lot more than the guitar did. (Mind I got a bargain with the guitar in a charity shop.)

There are several makes of cymbal cases that would work nicely. MOST music shops catering to something other than kids bashing drums should be able to get you what you need. Larger ones may also have a second-hand/consignment area where you could get a decent case and save a little money.

I'd add a little foam rubber against the inside (even if there is a bit already). My road case for my cymbals would work pretty well will a little adaptation (like, removing the center post the cymbals are supposed to be lined up on).

Of course, I prefer to use my drum as a carry-on. Toothbrushes and razor and the like can be gotten ANYWHERE. A good bodhran is a bit harder to find...

My bodhran is a regular transatlantic traveller. It flies in its soft leather case, which is tailored to the drum diameter. A disc of 3/16" plywood the same diameter as the drum is snugly fitted in contact with the skin. Various soft items are stowed inside the rim-- no problems yet! Boab

If it were mine, I would make up a fitted case from aluminium sheet: I knock up the main ring first, overlapping the ends and rivetting the seam with hammered aluminium rivets. I'd make the ring over height by some 25mm ... and turn under truncated "V"-shaped tabs to rivet on a circular base. This would all be made large enough to line with closed cell plastic foam - and that would be covered in some appropriate tough cloth and glued in.

The lid is just a repeat with less depth and a slightly larger diameter ... plus a suitable hinge and lock. I'd probably put two small wooden bars on the side to act as "feet" when it stood up sideways and I place a decent handle opposite. Since your drum doesn't have the usual Bodhran crossbar, I would not need to (or be able to) put in a frame to support the drum ... but it sounds big enough and ugly enough to look after itself in a simply padded box.

Actually, as I understand it, new regulations have been proposed to ban bodhranai from airplanes entirely for fear that he or she might take control of the plane and crash into a session.

No really. The bodhran is the coolest instrument in the world second only to the human voice. If I didn't play I would shrivel up and die easily.

Anyway, my experience traveling with my Albert Alfonso 16" drum (6 or so inches deep) is that I can stick all kinds of soft odds and ends in the basin of the drum for carry-on. Lots of stuff, like Chex mix, in flight reading, sweaters, small children - you name it. It also stows perfectly under the seat. I actually perfer it to taking a bookbag because it makes for interesting conversation in mid flight.

Anyway, case (semi) solution - I went to a sail/sail bag maker and asked her to make a bag for my drum out of pretty thick canvas. Into the sides I asked her to put that semi-flexible sheet plastic (like those flexible cutting boards) and about an inch of foam (the plastic on the other side of the foam from the drum). The result is a pretty well padded and therefore pretty safe case. I'm not sure that I'd trust it to go in the hold, but I hardly worry about bumping it when I carry it on the plane. Its also suprisingly light which I'm afraid may not be a virtue of many hard cases.

I know its not exactly what you're after, but I hope this helps somewhat.

I'd think it'd be easy enough to build a case. Or maybe you could get a travelling suitcase big enough to hold it and put in lots of foam rubber to hold it firm - that might be a bit lighter, and less likely to roll around.

BTW, the finest Hran case I have ever owned is a custom built case made of solid oak with a rope carrying "handle". It's a beauty, with 45 degree "sides" so it can stand vertically or on that angle. The lid has space for eight tippers. However, I would hate to have it tossed around an airplane cargo hold and I would hate to have to pay freight by the pound... it's a heavy sucker !

I'm sure any carpenter of even slight ability could make a wooden case that would do the job.

Try Malachy Kearns bodhrans (Ireland). He sells a plastic case, which could be easily modified for a 7" deep Hran. Of course, if we knew where you are located, it might be easier to point you to a supplier.

The only cases I've found to fit Bodhrans are cymbal cases, but I don't recall having seen a flight version.
