That's the river for me ...

OK, Sorcha, why does this not turn up in a Digitrad and Forum search? (And how did you find it?)

I know some recent things don't show up, but that was from 8 months ago.

I'm puzzled.

Noreen

Too recent for SuperSearch, Noreen. I found it with the Forum Search on the Quick Links menu.

Thanks Sorcha. I did a search first and was surprised when I couldn't find it - but obviously I didn't do the search through the Quick Links!

Now, how about the tune anyone? I can recall the chorus tune but is the verse the same or different? (I am very good at recalling a tune slightly differently from the original, given I tend to try to sing a harmony!)

All the love I've got I give her ...

Here's a version of the tune. I have some of Rod's own transcriptions (or one's people did for him - from when I was playing guitar for the CDs) but this is not among them, so this is from my memory.

(I'm not sure what's happening with Dave Webber and Anni Fentiman's book of Rod's songs. Transcriptions were being made from various recordings of Rod singing and at Rod's memorial day Dave did mention to me that this was going slowly and he might get me to do some of them. However, since then I've heard nothing about it, and I forgot to ask about progress when I talked to them a week ago - they're also a bit busy with house moving at the moment).

Thanks Mick. I saw Dave & Anni at Lancaster and I didn't think of asking them either!

Here's to the friends ...

Hi Alan!

I would like to suggest that Rod never sailed on a vessel called the 'Passover' - I rather suggest that it was 'the old 'Orsova'!

Good Luck!

Thanks, Tony. Do you know if it is an Italian name and does it mean anything? See you at Chippenham no doubt ...

We are three jolly fishermen ...

The 'Orsova' was a Peninsular & Orient Passenger Liner which about the time Rod was at sea was on the Australian run, Southampton to Sydney, in the last days of real 'Liners' (that is to say, ships that maintained regular schedules, partly for the Mail (hence the RMS 'Orsova')) before the days of regular flights. I guess a trip on her was the inspiration for 'Sail Away'.

P & O christened a lot their ships with names that start with 'O', hence Oriana, Oronsay, Orcades, Orsova etc. I don't think the names actually meant anything but they are evocative of the era as they roll off the tongue, aren't they?.

Yes, we'll be at Chippers, aren't you at Upton then?

Alan
If you want it, I have a complete words and music sheet that I made up originally for Folk London (even contains a picture of Tower Bridge). PM me with an e-mail address if you want it and I'll send it as a PDF file.

Thanks Tony. No, I won't be at Upton this year (although I should be singing for the Shellback Chorus which is on the list of performers). Instead, I am going to the Mudcat EuroGathering in Brussels.

Don't mind the rain or the rolling sea ...
Alan

I think this may also be on an album by Johnny Collins and/or Jim Mageean
