Click on the "membership" link at the top of your screen. Fill out the required sections to join Mudcat (it's free, so don't worry). The last item on the registration form is a filter for BS threads. Say "yes" to the BS filter and when you log on to Mudcat next you will not see any thread labelled "BS".

Moderation of high quality discussion forums is pretty standard nowadays. It is done to keep discussion on-topic, to remove offensive posts/posters, that sort of thing. Many believe moderation is long overdue here, to make Mudcat a useful music site.

The sort of arbitrary censorship routinely seen here is done to protect the guilty.

Mudcat is such a special place, you are virtually guaranteed to get less than you paid for.

Sorry Annraoi, but with all the respect I have for you and your scholarship, I must disagree with you on this one. Mudcat has never been simply a music site. It is music that draws us here, but all subjects are fair game for discussion. Joe is not now, nor has he ever been, an "owner". Max relies on him, and Jeff, to keep it going, but Max is, always has been, and ever will be, the final arbiter with regard to this place. And he decreed long ago that censorship would be kept to an absolute minimum. I agree that there are threads that I suspect I would not like. I just don't go in them. The current "genitals" thread is an example. There are many others. There are other threads that are what you would term "non musical", that I do participate in. Most of the time I just browse without posting. There are many times I will open a thread I might not be interested in just because of who posts. Your posts, as well as Wolfgang, Sandy Paton, Liam's Brother, Seamus Kennedy, Rick Fielding, Frank Hamilton, Jerry Rasmussen, Philippa, and so on, are like that. I respect your scholarship, so I open the post.

What does it have to do with music? I have thought a great deal about this and have come up with my view of it. I find that people whose primary interest is in the study of trad forms, would prefer that it be purely about the music. Those for whom their music is an expression of political and philosophical positions prefer to have it wide open. And of course there are gradients between. That is where I lie. As a person who was raised during a time of political turmoil in the States (I was born in 1951, and grew up in the 60's), "protest songs" had a great affect on me. But my earliest memories are of the traditional music of the land of my grandparents. Hence, this place is a perfect outlet for both sides of my musical personality. One of the roles that the songs and tunes have always had (especially among the people that we are both descended from) was and is as an outlet for political and social expression.

With respect I would say that folks need to quit worrying about the threads they don't like. If they aren't posted to, they will die. If they don't, then there is a message there as well.

When is MudCat going to get back to its roots and raison d'etre i.e. music and songs?
Vitriolic rants, such as the still ongoing exchanges about Catholic priests and paedophilia, with absolutely no musical content or relevance, would seem to me to be worthy of a precipitate termination.
I am aware that Joe and other "owners" have to tread a very narrow and difficult path and I am also aware that I myself have succumbed to the temptation to join in such exchanges. Nonetheless, I feel very strongly that similar non-musical threads must be shut down as soon as it becomes clear that they have no musical relevance.
Is this censorship? Yes, it is, insofar as a discussion of the syntax of the Irish Verbal Noun would be ruled out of place on a forum dedicated to terrapin breeding in Outer Mongolia.
