If you are thinking of investing in Memphis Jug Band recordings, it is well to bear in mind the complete works are available on David French's Frog label. There are 3 volumes. Volumes 1 and 3 were first issued on JSP label. Frog issued Vol 2 and later reissued Vols 1 and 3. 'Round and Round' is on Vol 3. These are all remastered by the best in the business - John R.T. Davis. The sound is greatly superior to the Document issues.

Frog: David French 167 Shernhall St Walthamstow London E17 9HX.

"Ary"—I'm not sure of the spelling, but it is pronounced like "airy"—is an archaic word that shows up in dialect sometimes. You won't find it in an ordinary dictionary. It means "any." It's the opposite of "nary"—which you can find in American dictionaries—and which means "none."

The OED says that "nary" is a dialect word derived from "ne'er a" (never a). I can't find "ary" but it seems logical that it comes from "e'er a" (ever a).

ROUND AND ROUND
(Charlie Bozo Nickerson (Memphis Jug Band), 1930)

1 My gal's got something : that I surely like
2 Every time she hugs me : it nearly breaks my back
3 Preacher in the pulpit : bobbing up and down
4 Sisters in the amen corner : singing let's go round and round
5 I got a gal : got movements like a cannonball
6 You women better be carful : you won't have no man at all
7 This winter you women better shimmy : and shimmy right fast
8 If they miss *airy* movements : it sure is their last
(*...*: questionable passage)

Panama Ltd, that's where I remember it from.

I can still remember the guitar part but because I didn't sing it, I can't remember the words and I was thinking of reviving it.

Many thanks; I will be investing in the Memphis album

Regards

Chris

Sorry finger slipped!

I was going to write that there is no need for you to apologise for not knowing an older version.

A recording of the Memphis Jug Band version is available on Document records.

Brian,

Sorry pal, this was the first time I heard it, I think the sampler was called 'Picnic'.

If you have any info on the Memphis Jug Band I'd be interested.

Ian.

Go back a few more years and you'll find that it was by the Memphis Jug Band, although I'm afraid I don't have the lyrics.

It was on a Harvest sampler album called 'A Breath of Fresh Air' and was by the Panama Limited Jug Band.

Sorry 'bout that, had to reset my cookie.

I can't remember where I know the song from but it starts.

My baby she got something I surely lack,
Every time she hugs me she nearly breaks my back.

Going round & round, me and my baby
Going round and round, round & round
Me and my sugar baby,
Going round & round

If anyone has any more verses or information you could make an old man very happy.

Chris
