Can anyone recommend a source of songs (short ones) that can be sung in lieu of a prayer of grace? I need words and music (and chords, if appropriate). The title of a book or three that might include such would be most helpful. Thanks.

When we had big family gatherings, my Uncle Walt always used to lead us in singing "Praise God from whom all blessings flow, praise him all creatures here below, praise him above, ye Heavenly Host, praise Father, son and Holy Ghost." Works beautifully for Christians, but not suitable if you aren't one.

Jerry: That song can also be sung to the tune of "Hernando's Hideaway" (with an Amen at the end for the "stinger"!). Makes it more fun for kids' camps and such!

Greg: Sorry, but it wasn't my idea! Singing those words to that tune has already been done, in summer camps and elsewhere. Anyway, if there is a God, one would hope he has a sense of humor (after all, he's supposed to have created humans, right? And the emu and the platypus? *G*).

I like the idea of thanking the people who cooked, sold, and produced the food, as well as the animals and plants involved in being eaten, as well as the evolutionary process for making us omnivores so we can eat anything (except, I hear, penguin).

My favorite as a akid in Ohio was always "The Johnny Appleseed Song"

I used to have to sing and direct little grace ditties every week at "high table' when I studied at Oxford for the summer (I was the resident music/drama person on staff). Wish I could remember some of these: they are quite formal but nice and short.

One of 'em goes "All things are Thine, no gifts have we; Lord of all gifts to offer Thee; and yet with loyal hearts we pray; Thine own before Thy feet we lay. Amen."

A Scottish songer/songriter I knew put the Selkirk grace to music (Possibly a traditional tune). For the life of me I can't remember his name! Iain something I think but can't be sure. I can't remember the verses he used either but he used the grace itself as a chorus.

The grace is -

Some hae meat and canna eat,
and some wad eat that want it,
but we hae meat and we can eat,
and sae the Lord be thankit.

I can't do the music bit here but if you get in touch I can sing it down the 'phone at you!

That should be "Counsell" in my earlier post. I'm getting lots of missed characters with this keyboard!

He was quite a character himself, always with a tale to tell.

He also had another one which my late father was trying to research. It had four or possibly five verses and listed bread, cheese, beer and meat(?) in one line of each verse, each verse being about one of them. They may have been listed in a different order in each verse.

Almost a decade after the OP's request, here's one of my favourites for 4 parts a cappella. It's arranged for women; for all male voices transpose down about 4 whole tones; for mixed voices have men sing the lower parts and women singing the higher ones. If you have really high sopranos available, transpose it up a couple of tones and have some of the men double the bass and melody an octave lower (which would make 6 parts total).
