There's a product called Real Jukebox available as a free download from www.real.com which enables you to read and record Real Player files and to save them as MP3s - but don't ask me how.

I think I've mentioned Total Recorder to you , Susan, but don't remember if you ever chose to get it. By setting TR to Software as the sound source, you can record a RealAudio stream to a .wav file which can then be compressed into MP3. If you don't want to do the recording in realtime, there's an accelerated recording checkbox that speeds it up on the order of 5-8 times, depending on your output quality settings.

at this page under "MP3 resources" are a bunch of things which are helpful...The one which will do what Susan wants is "Streambox Ripper"....this is an old program which is no longer commercially available,(so you CAN'T send anyone any money for it)... and is not 'approved' by RA. I gather it works fine, but YOU have to decide if you want to use it when RA does not like it...

Amos, if the world were rational, EVERYONE would be using Macs, and all programming expertise would be devoted to making everything work there...but *sigh*...so many things were never written for the MAC, as it just don't pay...

Iven: You've got me interested in Total Recorder. I just bought a new CD burner a Mitsumi CD-RW CR 480ATE. extremely fast and easy to use....I recorded m voice and song into real jukebox earlier and go good results...But I can't burn a CD of myself until i turn my real jukebox files into wave.....Will Total Recorder do that for me?? I believe that Total Recorder does it by routing any sound that passes thru your sound card into it's own software...thus, by a 3 step process, you can get ANYTHING into MP3

...conversion is when the program itself looks at one file format, thinks about it, and spits it out as another format

another program that will do something similar to Total Recorder is Silent Bob on this page

Yes, Frank, Total Recorder will do it. As Bill says, I think Silent Bob will do it also. I just deleted SB from my computer yesterday, but I can't say I ever gave it a real test to see how well it works. The price is right, however, so you might want to try it out before investing in Total Recorder.

dbpoweramp will do it as well, if you download and install the codecs. This is one of my favorite encoding programs of all time. dbpoweramp.com

Just found out that dbpoweramp requires certain files from realplayer in order to work, so you have to install realplayer anyway. I did so, and my computer went bonkers. Took me three days to fix it, and it's still acting up now and then. :(

My computer does NOT like realplayer for some reason. *Sigh*

ra2wav looks like the best one. That's what I'm using now.

It'll take the ra file to a wav file, which you then can compress to mp3. There will be some quality loss though, as ra is lossy, and so is mp3. But at least you'll be able to hear it, and without taking up your entire hard drive.

I've been making some progress on the MP3s from RA, but I have about two hundred AIFFs that I will want to convert. So far I have not seen any information on doing that, but AIFF is an Apple product as far as I know, so I have sent Amos a message about that. Maybe in his Windows emulator he can do something with these.

Check dbpoweramp for an aiff codec. Just don't install the ra codec for dbpoweramp if your computer doesn't like realplayer.

Boy have I been learning a LOT!!!!

Among other things..... DbPowerAmp will not only convert RealPlayer files already saved on your hard drive.... it will go FETCH RealPlayer files if you THOUGHT you saved them but actually you only saved the LINK to them as a "file," and THEN it will convert them! Yeah! It is still in a testing and refinement stage, the codec for RealPlayer, but because I noticed that it saves the files that ARE on my disk, in "realtime," I wondered if it would go get those pesky ones I thought were safely stashed and AREN'T, and play them through to save them in realtime too. So I tried one. And it worked!

Well, they WILL be stashed shortly!

And-- did you know you can change the filename's extension (.ram to .ra or .rm) and it works just fine? That's what you have to do before converting, if they have a .ram extension. Change them first and then batch convert.

Also, Streambox has a 20-file limit on batch conversion-- I have not found dbPowerAmp's batch limit yet, and I am doing a batch of nearly 40 now. OK, it is taking awhile, doing it in realtime as it is. That's OK-- I am supposed to be asleep!

Real Player - gave me fits at first - so I uninstalled it and did a "Custom installation." I unchecked every box in the "What do you want Real Player" to do section - no problems since - Otherwise Real Player takes over the whole computer - even my dang photos were converted to some wierdo file things.
