Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Crane Driver Date: 18 Apr 02 - 06:41 PM Martyn Windham-Read sings it unaccompanied on "Emu Plains" - haven't heard the other versions, so don't know which tune it is, but he misses a line out of the third verse, compared with the original poem. Who did that first? |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Big Tim Date: 19 Apr 02 - 02:24 AM A tremendous achievement there Bill, thanks. |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Bearheart Date: 23 Apr 02 - 01:18 PM Hi Bill, I have a lovely CD by Hanz Araki who plays with Setanta now that has a very nice version. Hanz also plays with the Casey Neill Trio (not strictly Irish music). He's based on the west caost. He plays Irish flute and sings, Finn McGinty backs him up on his first Cd just called Hanz Araki- Traditional Irish Music. That's the CD that it's on. Bekki |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Peter T. Date: 23 Apr 02 - 04:28 PM I bow to your achievement, but I still wonder about why you say that the "Judy Collins" genetic stream is "more or less" like Yeat's own version. I may be tone deaf, but I can hear nothing similar from your transcription, except the monotone line of the chorus. Less, certainly. yours, Peter T. |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: GUEST,yeats fan Date: 07 Oct 05 - 10:09 AM don cooper did a great version of this poem on his lp 'what you feel is how you grow' from 1972 |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Tinkerscuss Date: 12 Jun 11 - 05:16 PM Jake Walton did the best ever version of this song and it is likely to be on his forthcoming anthology ! He is still out there performing and occasionally guesting with anglo-celtic band Tinkerscuss so check them out and perhaps you'll get to see Jake too ! |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Phil Cooper Date: 12 Jun 11 - 06:27 PM Tom Rapp, who used to be the heart and soul of Pearls Before Swine, sang a version on his 1998 album, Journal of the Plague Years. His setting is with an original melody, more singable than Collin's version (my own opinion). |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: GUEST,julia L Date: 12 Jun 11 - 07:18 PM I'd like to hear Tom Rapp's song.In my opinion, Yeats' melody does not do the poem justice. I myself have set the poem to the tune of the Wexford Carol and recorded it, first in 1986, then again last year with harp and flute accompaniment on Castlebay's album "Bards & Blarney". Audiences respond favorably... cheers- Julia Lane |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Phil Cooper Date: 12 Jun 11 - 11:15 PM I'm not sure if the Rapp version is on youtube, some of his songs have been put up there with visual effects. I expect you could find it on I-tunes. |

Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: GUEST,Beth Date: 21 Nov 12 - 06:56 PM On the Chris Thompson version who plays the flute? I found it on youtube but don't know where else it may have appeared. |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: GUEST Date: 22 Nov 12 - 12:14 AM Caroline Herring recorded it to a tune that I think she wrote on her 2009 album, Golden Apples of the Sun. A live recording is here. |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: GUEST,Blandiver Date: 22 Nov 12 - 04:22 AM Jake Walton sings the Richard Dyer-Bennet setting on the Trailer album Times and Traditions for Dulcimer (1976) with Roger Nicolson and Andrew Cromshaw. Nice though it is, it's Jake's setting of the E J Coatsworth poem St Eval (as Follow the Plough, described in the sleevenote an anonymous Cornish poem no doubt to avoid copyright issues) that's the standout song on the record. Read about it here: http://www.informatik.uni-hamburg.de/~zierke/folk/records/rogernicholson.html |

Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: GUEST,Lin Date: 17 Sep 16 - 09:32 PM Donovan's version has always been my favorite. I used to listen to Donovan sing it from his album over and over again. Of course I am a huge Donovan fan and love all of his folk ballads. Also love Judy Collins version as well. The group Golden Bough from Northern, California (now living in Oregon I believe) did a very nice version on one of their older albums. I have seen them in concert several times over the years and they have a lot of albums. Folksinger, Larry Siegel has a good version as well. |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Rex Date: 19 Sep 16 - 12:48 PM I am very fond of this song and was checking this thread for any stories I may not know of it. Ah but it is a discography as I now see it plainly says. Very well, I recorded this on my Ladies' Choice CD with 12-string guitar, some tin whistle and John Phillips wrapping it up with uilleann pipes. While recording some starlings took up a racket outside and I jumped up and flung open the window of the studio and we caught them adding their chorale to the ending. Here is a clip of the recording. I would paste the entire song here if I knew the means. Song of the Wandering Angus/ Ladies' Choice |
Subject: RE: Song of Wandering Aengus Discography From: Rex Date: 22 Sep 16 - 12:24 PM I forgot, my Ladies' Choice CD is on Spotify. You can listen to the entire track # 9 of Song of the Wandering Angus there. |
